ity of Kerrville POLICE PoiceDepariert "m0 50 sxoaseaono mreeara News Release May 25, 2018 Contact: Officer san Trevito ‘Number: (820) 258-1371 Scam Warnings (May 25, 2018) The Kerrville Police Department has received numerous reports of various internet scams and intemet fraud attempts targeting the citizens of Kerville ‘These scams involve a Facebook scam and a personal e-mail message scam, Facebook users are asked to delete or ignore messages that claim that they have won thousands or mil- lions of dellars in the federal government program for community empowerment, and that their names. were seen on the winer’s list. Some of the messages claim that the govemmmentis sending checks to dis- abled people and the recipients’ names are on the list. The messages are fake messages sent by cyber- criminals, Please DO NOT respond to them with your personal information, or follow the instructions, even if the messages appear as if they were sent by a friend or family member. ‘Scammers have cloned or hjacked some Facebook users’ accounts, and are sending fake messages to their friends, in an attemptto trick them into sending the'r personal information and or money. you are the recipient of an e-mail from a supposed friend or relative asking you to send themmoney, please beware. Scammers wil claim to be a friend or relative and state that they need financial help and ‘they want you to send them money. The scammers will ask you to purchase an itunes gift card, soratch off the back of the card, take a photograph of the card number and e-mail them the photograph of the 16 character number. Itunes gift cards are the most commonly used, but the scammer may ask youl to pur- chase any type of giftcard, Facebook and intemet users, should not send their personal information to anyone on Facebook or by e- mail who claim they have won a lottery, online promotions, goverment program awards, or some other ‘organizational awards.
