Had we but world enough and time,
This coyness, lady, were no crime.
We would sit down, and think which way
To walk, and pass our long love’s day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges’ side
Shouldst rubies find; I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the flood,
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires and more slow;
An hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.
But at my back I always hear
Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found;
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song; then worms shall try
That long-preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust;
The grave’s a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.
Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may,
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapped power.
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Through the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

Esa virginidad tan bien guardada;
Polvo será vuestra honra antojadiza
Y mi lujuria acabará en ceniza.
La tumba es una linda, íntima plaza,
Pero creo que allí nadie se abraza.
…..Por eso en tanto el joven color rosa
Cual rocío sobre tu piel se posa,
Y transpira tu espíritu espontáneo
Por cada poro con fuego instantáneo,
Gocemos mientras seamos aún capaces;
Y, pasionales como aves rapaces,
Devoremos mejor el tiempo aprisa
Que decaer en su poder que agrisa.
Nuestra fuerza y dulzura toda entera
Enrollémosla en forma de una esfera;
Tricemos goces con lucha reñida
Por las puertas de hierro de la vida.
Así, aunque no podamos hacer nuestro
Sol parar, sí lo haremos correr diestro.

Earth has not anything to show more fair:

Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;

IT’S A BEAUTEOUS EVENING
It is a beauteous Evening, calm and free;
The holy time is quiet as a Nun
Breathless with adoration; the broad sun
Is sinking down in its tranquillity;
The gentleness of heaven broods on the Sea:
Listen! the mighty Being is awake
And doth with his eternal motion make
A sound like thunder−everlastingly.
Dear Child! dear Girl! that walkest with me
here,
If thou appear untouched by solemn thought,
Thy nature is not therefore less divine:
Thou liest in Abraham's bosom all the year;
And worshipp'st at the Temple's inner shrine,
God being with thee when we know it not
Nada puede mostrarnos la tierra más hermoso:
Torpe de alma seria quien por aquí pasara
Y ante esa majestad absorto no quedara.
Lleva ahora la ciudad el traje esplendoroso
De la hora matutina, y bajo el cielo añil,
Los barcos, torres, cúpulas, teatros, templos,
puentes,
Reposan en la tierra, lustrosos, refulgentes…
Todo brilla en el aire purísimo y sutil.
Jamás aún hizo el sol tan grande la belleza
De valles y montañas, del alba al despertar,
Jamás logré sentir tan dulce sensación,
Corre el argénteo río con rítmica pereza;
Las casas aún cerradas parecen dormitar,
Y en el silencio late su inmenso corazón.
Es una tarde hermosa, tranquila y libre;
El tiempo santo es silencioso como una monja
Sin aliento con adoración; el amplio sol
Se está hundiendo en su tranquilidad;
La dulzura del cielo se revolca en el mar:
Escuchar! el poderoso Ser está despierto
Y hace con su movimiento eterno hacer
Un sonido como el trueno, eternamente.
¡Querido hijo! querida niña! que camina conmigo
aquí,
Si parece no tocado por un pensamiento solemne,
Tu naturaleza no es mucho menos divina:
Tú liest en el seno de Abraham todo el año;
Y adorar en el santuario interior del Templo,
Dios está contigo cuando no lo sabemos

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;

How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
Camina por la Belleza
Camina en la belleza, como lo hace la noche
por regiones sin nubes de cielos estrellados;
y las cosas mejores de lo claro y lo oscuro
se citan al encuentro en su aspecto y sus ojos,
ahora suavizados por la trémula luz
que al día jubiloso el cielo niega.
Una sombra de más, un rayo menos,
habrían disminuido la gracia inenarrable
que ondula en cada uno de sus bucles corvinos
o que tan suavemente ilumina su cara,
do dulces pensamientos serenamente expresan
cuán puro, cuán amado, alojamiento encuentran.
Y sobre esa mejilla, y sobre aquella frente,
tan suaves, tan serenas, y aún tan elocuentes:
las sonrisas que vencen y el rubor que reluce,
que nos dicen de días en bienestar vividos,
de una mente tranquila ante cualquier estruendo
y de un corazón que amando es inocente.
