FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

HOMEWORK PROBLEM 6
Due: May 21 2018

PART A
Conduct a patch test for Program elastic.m, strain.m, and stress.m. Verify the codes using a patch
test for 4 and 6 node elements with specific boundary conditions.

PART B
The following photoelastic images show fringe patterns corresponding to regions where the
difference in the principal stresses is constant (taken from Frocht, 1961). The patterns, therefore,
correspond to regions of constant maximum shear stress in the x-y plane. Figure a of the
accompanying figure corresponds to the Brazilian tensile test, Figure b is similar but is a ring
rather than a disc, and Figure c shows the stress distribution around a hole in a plate loaded in the
vertical direction. For each, compare the results from a similar finite element plane stress analysis
using contours of constant effective stress. These will be similar to constant maximum shear
stress, but you may want to revise stress.m to calculate maximum shear stress as well as effective
stress.

where shear modulus G=8.1GPa, and λ(1-C)=9.6GPa.
