FEAST OF THE HOLY TRINITY
What do a candle, a shamrock, an egg, a
triangle and a pretzel have in common?
Here’s a clue: they each somewhat have
‘three parts’ to them, and yet are ‘one’.
At various points in my life, I’ve seen the
objects above being used as a way to
explain the mystery of the Trinity. They are
our human attempts of making sense of
how God is ‘three-in-one’. They may be
useful in their simplicity in trying to
represent a complex idea, yet as such they
remain poor symbols.
Many artworks depict the Trinity with the
image of the Father as an elderly man with
white beard, Jesus, and the Spirit in the
form of a dove. Rublev’s icon is unique in
showing three similar looking men (listen
out for Fr. Joe’s homily!) In any case, these
images obviously shows three separate
‘beings’ – so how is it that they are one?
The more we try to wrap our heads around
it, the more we get a headache!
We don’t know how God is ‘one’ and ‘three’
at the same time... He just is, and that is
how He wants us to know Him. Some
thirteen years ago I attended a retreat with
Fr. Jaime Bonet (our Verbum Dei founder)
for the first time. For one month he spoke
of the Trinity: he never once attempted to
explain how this whole three-in-one
business works, but I was struck by how
real and loving his relationship with the
Father, Jesus and Spirit were!
In today’s gospel, Jesus sends out his
disciples to “baptise in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit”. It was a call, not to explain the
doctrine of the Trinity, but to bring people
to encounter this Trinitarian God, to come
to know Him as Father, Jesus and Spirit.
God is Father (and Mother!) – a God who is
Creator, who gave us life, who loves each
one of us unconditionally as a precious
child, who cares for us and provides for us.
God is Jesus – He
who is our Lord and
friend and brother,
who lived and
walked on earth and
showed us the Way,
who gave his life for
us so that we may
have life and have it
to the full.
God is Spirit – He who is the breath of Life
itself, who inspires and encourages and
empowers us, who speaks to us in soft
whispers as He guides us in our lives.
The Trinity is a mystery, yes, but it is also a
gift: God revealing Himself to us, desiring
us to come to know Him. In today’s world
where so many people live in loneliness
isolation, God assures us that His desire is
for us never to be alone, but always in
companionship with Him. Let us enjoy this
gift of the loving presence of the Father,
Jesus and Spirit and share it with others!

Brussels last Thursday. You can read the

guilty of war crimes and crimes against

about records and information that we have
on parishioners, i.e. Records on Baptism,
Confirmation, First Holy Communion, First
Reconciliation, Marriage, Funeral. It is worth
keeping in mind that all the information we
have is what we would have received from
you, the parishioners. Information on parish
volunteers is also held in trust in confidence.
On May 25 2018 a new General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into
force. There are a number of procedures we
need to follow.
Any parishioner is entitled to inquire as to the
details held concerning them on our records;
you may do this by making a written Subject
Access Request (SAR) request.
Any individual/volunteer in the church who
has necessary details of fellow members of a
particular group will be required sign the
Confidentiality Agreement. These forms are
now available.
