One can temporarily connect two pipes by means of a coupling:

Cross coupling: to connect two pipes at right angles

Swivel coupling: to connect two pipes to each other at an angle
Extension coupling: to connect two pipes to each other longitudinally
Beam Couplings: to affix a pipe to a steel beam

The connection is obtained by clamping the coupling to the pipes and inserting the cotter
pins.

Standards

Van Thiel couplings conform to standards NEN-EN 74-1:2005 / -2:2008 / -3:2007 for
couplings and fittings for steel pipe scaffolding, or are subjected to comparative tests
under our own control.

Requirements and test methods:

Class B for cross couplings
Class B for swivels
Class B for Extension couplings
Values for beam couplings obtained through tests

Raw materials

The raw materials used must meet the requirements of the applicable Eurocode and / or
the values stated in BS EN 12811-2. The raw materials are subject to control under the
ISO 9001-2000 system.

Marking
Van Thiel couplings are recognizable by the stamped marking “EN-74 CÜ xxxxx”
(dependent on the type of coupling) on the cotter pin of the coupling.

Quality
The Van Thiel quality control department controls the quality of the couplings by means
of constant process control and daily testing of the couplings.

Corrosion protection
The couplings are thermally galvanised, providing lifelong protection against corrosion.
Corrosion protection in accordance with:
Sherardising: NEN-EN 13811:2003 and NEN-EN-ISO 14713-1 and -3:2010
Galvanising: NEN-EN-ISO 1461:2009

Use
Couplings should only be used to join:
Two steel scaffolding pipes with an outside diameter of 48,3 mm and a wall thickness
in accordance with or equal to NEN-EN 39.
Two aluminium scaffolding pipes with an outside diameter of 48,3 mm and a
minimum wall thickness of 4 mm.

Couplings should be moved into position by striking them with a 500 gram Thiel hammer
to the ‘dead stroke’ (NEN-EN 74-1).
Exercising normal strength, this should take approximately one to three blows.

Couplings must be visually inspected before use. In case of visible damage or

deformation, do not use the couplings.
