With the novel, integrated and
modular MAAG CEM Drive concept,
FLSmidth MAAG Gear combines the
benefits of the proven MAAG Gear
technology used all over the world
for many years with an innovative
motor design, to produce a state-of-
the-art energy-saving drive system for
vertical mills in one housing. With
FLSmidth MAAG Gear as your system
supplier, everything comes from a
single source.
The modular construction of the
MAAG CEM Drive System permits a
wide power range, with the best
possible availability levels, allowing
optimized material grinding.
The flexibility of the drive enables the
production process to be optimized.
The MAAG CEM Drive System
includes the following sub-
systems:
Transformer
The transformer and frequency
converter can be ideally matched to
the local conditions. The modular
design allows for increased dependa-
bility, while the robust construction
enables reliable operation in the
harsh cement environment. The use
of environmentally friendly, low-
maintenance dry-type transformers
eliminates the need for additional
and costly safety equipment.
Furthermore the transformers are
also characterized by a high degree
of standardization of parts. The low
thermal load reduces the risk level.
Variable Frequency Converter
(VFC)
The VFC allows the mill speed to be
continuously adjusted and hence
ideally matched to the specific
grin­ding requirements of production.
A soft start feature is possible, as well
as slow turning and positioning of
the mill for maintenance work. The
VFC operates at a low voltage (690
V). The high pulse frequency of 4 kHz
allows for extremely rapid torque
adjustments. This means that any
peak loads that arise in the mill can
be significantly absorbed, which in

The VFC has been tested under the
toughest operating conditions and
meets the most demanding require-
ments. With protection class IP65,
the VFCs can also be positioned in
the immediate vicinity of the mill.
The VFC comprises a modular
assembly of identical compact
modules, which can be activated and
controlled independently.
This supports continuous operation
with maximum availability.
The VFC is supplied as a pre-assem-
bled modular solution, allowing fast
and straightforward installation on
site and a short commissioning time.
Motor
The heart of the MAAG CEM Drive is
a permanent magnet synchronous
