    Static Electricity with Salt and Pepper


    Here’s a fun second grade science activity that uses static electricity to separate
    salt and pepper.

    You will need:


    • Salt
    • Pepper
    • Plastic spoon
    • Woolen clothing

    Instructions:
    • Measure out a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of pepper and mix them well.
    • Rub the spoon on the woolen clothing and hold it above the salt and pepper
    mixture.
    • How does the pepper react?

    What’s happening?
    When you rub the plastic spoon on wool, you give it a negative charge. A nega-
    tively charged object will attract positive particles. When you hold the spoon
    above mixture, it will attract both the salt and the pepper, but pepper is lighter so
    it will jump up and cling to the spoon.
