SHANG DYNASTY

1176 B.C. SHANG DYNASTY WAS FOUNDED IN 1766 B.C. WAS HELD
TO BE FOUND BY A REBEL NAMED TANG. THE SHANG ALWAYS
FOUGHT WITH NEIGHBORING BARBARIANS, INCLUDING NOMADS
FROM THE INNER ASIA STEPPES. THE KING WOULD LIKE TO FORCE
ABOUT AN ARMY OF THOUSAND AT THEIR CAPITAL AND
PERSONALLY LEAD THIS FORCE INTO BATTLE. THE SHANG DYNASTY
ENDED IN 1046 B.C., BECAUSE THE LAST EMPEROR AS KING ZHOU,
HIS FAMILY AND HIS PEOPLE WERE AGAINST HIS WAYS. THEY WERE
EVENTUALLY WAS DEFEATED BY THE ZHOU DYNASTY.
ZHOU DYNASTY
1046 B.C. THE DATES FOR THE ZHOU DYNASTY WAS AROUND 1046
B.C. TO 256 B.C... THIS DYNASTY WAS NOT A VERY FULLY UNIFIED
NATION. IN 756 B.C. THROUGH TILL 256 B.C. THE BARBARIANS
INVASION DROVE THE ZHOU RULERS EASTWARDS, THE STATE OF
QIN WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR GUARDING THE WESTERN FRONTIER.
THIS DYNASTY CAME TO AN END DURING THE WARRING STATES
PERIOD IN 256 B.C. AND THE QIN CAPTURES THE CITY OF
CHENGZHOU, AND THE LAST RULER, KING NAN WAS KILLED.
QIN DYNASTY
221 B.C. THE QIN DYNASTY IN 221 B.C. DEFEATED AND UNITED
NUMBER OF SMALLER STATES UNDER A STRONG CENTRAL
GOVERNMENT AND ESTABLISHED THE CHINESE EMPIRE. THE FIRST
QIN EMPEROR WAS SHI HUANGDI. THIS CHINESE EMPIRE LASTED
FOR 2,000 YEARS AND WAS RULED BY DIFFERENT DYNASTIES. THE
QIN DYNASTY ENDED IN 207 B.C.
GREAT WALL OF CHINA
1368 B.C. THE WORKERS FOR THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA WERE
LABORERS, PEASANTS, SOLDIERS, CONVICTS, AND POWS. SOME
SAY THAT IF THE PEOPLE DIED DURING CONSTRUCTION THEY WERE
BURIED INSIDE THE WALL. THE GREAT WALL WAS FINALLY FINISHED
IN 1644 B.C.
HANS DYNASTY
206 B.C. ANOTHER IMPORTANT DYNASTY WAS THE HANS DYNASTY,
THEY RULED 206 B.C. THESE RULERS PUSHED THE EMPIRE INTO
CENTRAL ASIA MANY OTHER DYNASTIES FOLLOWED OVER THE
CENTURIES. THE HANS DYNASTY ENDED IN 9 A.D.
DYNASTY OF CHINA FROM 1644 TO 1911/12. AFTER THE

BOXER REBELLION THE QING DYNASTY ATTEMPTED TO

REFORM THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT, BUT IT WAS TOO

LATE.  MANY INDIVIDUALS WANTED TO FORM A REPUBLIC,

WHICH WOULD GIVE THE PEOPLE A VOICE IN THEIR

GOVERNMENT. DE

Confucianism

551 B.C. Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who lived

in 551-479 B.C. He believed in respect for the past and

one’s ancestors. He thought in an orderly society,

children should obey their parents, and the parents

should obey the government and emperor. He stressed

the importance of education in well run society.

Taoism

550 B.C. It gets its name Tao- Te-Ching. The book is

based on the teaching of Lao-tuz, who lived in the 6th

century B.C. Lao-tuz believed in the importance of

preserving and restoring harmony in the individual and in

the universe. He also thought the government should

leave the people and do little as possible.

Buddhism

213 B.C. Came to China from India. Confucianism and

Taoism influenced Buddhism as it developed in China.

Ideas important in Buddhism are rebirth and the end of

the rebirth cycle.

China Opens Up to the World

China had a weak army and could not fight off the

Europeans. Europeans took advantages of China and

forced it to treaties that granted special privileges to

the Europeans. They were controlled by Germany, Britain,

France, Russia, and France. China was angered by this

influence.
