to see and meet many 5th grade
parents and guardians! Parents

received materials we went over

 ROOM 114 – CLASS NEWS
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
This week we started Unit 1 in math.
This unit focuses on multiplication and division
word problems. We worked on problems with
combinations and used tree diagrams to figure
out and display the solutions. We also discussed
comparison problems and wrote our own word
problems using multiplication and division.
We continued working with our IB
Planner, titled The Human Machine. This week
we focused our inquiry on the digestive system.
We measured the approximate length of our
digestive system and were quite surprised with
the result! We also built models demonstrating
peristalsis, which is how our food moves down
into our stomach. Next week, we will focus our
inquiry on our heart and lungs.
In spelling we focused on words with the
long a sound. Please remember that all of our
spelling work is done at school, but we
encourage students to study and practice at
home. A great website for practice and games
with our spelling words is www.spellingcity.com.
Next week we will wrap up our MAP
testing for the fall when we take the math
portion on Thursday.

The Matoska International PTO
announces the Innisbrook fall fundraiser
which starts on Monday, September
20th with orders accepted until Friday,
October 1st. All money earned directly
benefits our students and school and is
used to fund classroom support, school
events and enrichment programs.
Please check your child's backpack for
your sales packet on Monday,
