Activity Title— Woodstock to Wall Street Interdisciplinary Year— Freshman
Skill— Research, Media and Writing Portfolio Competency— Media &
Communications
For the final interdisciplinary of freshman year, | participated in the Film Critic’s Corner. With my
partners, | wrote a script analyzing the historical significance of the movie, Hidden Figures, and the relevance
to American society during the 1960s. We dressed in clothing from the time period and recorded the show,
taking on various jobs around the video studio to familiarize ourselves with the film industry. Although we had
most of the week to complete the project, there was a lot of components to complete before the filming
began. My group and | needed to research the time period and connect this information with the historical
context from the movie. Then, we needed to identify scenes from the film that corresponded with the context,
that we were analyzing and incorporate these video clips into our script. It was difficult to decide on which
scene to use, and even harder to find a high quality version of the clip online. Meanwhile, while we were
working on our assignment, other groups had begun to film. My partners and I each needed to help out with
their Film Review video.
This assignment was different than most other assignments from this year. Although I have completed
a historical analysis for each of the cinematic analysis movies I've watched, this interdisciplinary required in
depth research about the time period. It was hands on and interactive, and | was able to weave each of the
video clips and contextual analysis into conversation with my on-air partner. | think that this project reflected
my growth in Media and Communications, because | was faced with various problems and challenges and
needed to work through them. During my job working with the teleprompter, each of the iPad screens began
scrolling at a different speed than the main controller that | was holding, As the news anchors continued to
speak, | had to figure out how to continue moving the iPads at the needed speed so that filming wouldn’t need
to restart. We have worked with this type of filming previously, during video class when we created news
shows. However, | was glad that I got more practice with this assignment because | enjoyed doing the
technical work - balancing sound levels and operating the cameras. | think it would be interesting to use this
skill ip the future, and to work in the film industry when | become an adult.
If | could complete the project a second time, | would keep my group and the script the same. | would just want
10 refilm our final take, because halfway through, one of the iPad teleprompters stopped working. Although it worked
out in the end, the audience can watch my and my partner's eyes moving back and forth between the camera and the
teleprompter for the other camera. During this project, | discovered my affinity for the backstage film work. Although |
enjoyed being an on camera anchor during the Film Critic’s Corner, | think my strengths were working on the film itself.
enjoyed editing the interstitial and working on sound and camera. This project was interesting because | got to analyze
the historical context weaved into a contemporary Award-winning film, Hidden Figures. | fett proud of my final project
because it conv 3@ of the movie while being entertaining for the audience.
