Jenny Donohue is a 38 year old young women who is an ICU
nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital in downtown Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. She has a 13 year old son named William who is
autistic. Jenny is an avid runner and loves to run the trails near
the river. She also enjoys scrapbooking and likes to entertain at
her house with scrapbooking parties with her girlfriends. She
currently rents a two bedroom apartment but would love to own
a home that has three bedrooms, two baths, with preferably a
Client Profile full bath on the second level. She would also like a living and
dining room space sufficient for entertaining. In this area she
would like built ins to display her small collection of Art Nouveau
pieces she has acquired over the years. A designated laundry
space with storage would be a necessity as well as ample closet
space in the bedrooms. A home office that could transition into
a crafting space would be a nice addition. She would love to
bring her Hispanic heritage into the interior design and mix it
with her love of the Art Nouveau period. Her budget is low to
midrange.

Jenny Donohue's home will evoke a warm, welcoming
feeling upon entering the home. Her love for Art Nouveau
will be reflected in the curvilinear furniture design that will
flow throughout the space and in the textiles selected. An
element of her heritage will be reflected in pops of color as
Concept accent pieces in the décor while keeping a soft feel in
muted shades on her walls and flooring. The textiles used
Statement for in her living space will be durable to withstand
entertaining but have a soft luxurious feel to the hand.
Jenny Donohue Special consideration will be given as to color choice in
respect to Jenny's son, William, who is autistic. His room
will include softer hues of blues and greens to create a
soothing, calming environment.

Color Changes

To create an environment that suits

both Jenny and her son William the
orange and hot pink values, hue and
saturation has been changed to a
salmon and a pinkish gray color. The
softer hues will work to provide a
calming environment for her son who
has Autism. The purple and darker
blue will be used as accents to bring in

INTA 212: CODES ANALYSIS CHART COMPLETED BY: Juarez and Rose
International Existing Building Code:
CODES ANALYSIS/UPDATES Rationalize why or why not the existing building should be expected to conform to the code
List the code in this column
Fire and Life 105.2.2 National Fire Alarm Code NFPA 72
Safety This is important and should be expected to be followed. All floors should have output signal to identify when it needs to be evacuated, this would prevent a major tragedy.
NFPA 720 This is important and need to be followed at all times. CO alarms should be installed in a central location to prevent a poisoning tragedy.
NFPA 10 This code should be followed, a portable fire extiguisher is important to have on hand.
Building
Elements and 404.2.3.5 Recessed doors It should be expected to be followed, it could be a safety hazard coming in or out of the room. When you are entering do a room, it should be clear and with enough space.
Materials
407.4.7.1.2 Symbols This should be expected to be followed. This symbols would help the blind or low vision person to identify the location where they are going. Communication is important.
804.5.4 Cooktop Clear floor space, positioned for a parallel or forward approach and underside insulation of cooktop to prevent burns are expected to be followed. The location of the controls for the cooktop are not required.
Electrical NFPA 70 This should be expected to be followed. It is important to the installer to be able to identify the location of the wiring to avoid create conflic or hardship.
4.1.1 EPM's Should be expected to be followed, deterioration in the equipment can cause malfuntion or an electrical failure.
8.1.1 Deenergizing equipment for inspections should be followed. This would proportionate a safe inspection and safe related work needs to be implemented.
Energy
Change light bulbs Replace the regular bulbs for more efficient ones like LED, which will reduce from 25-70% more electricity.
Conservation
Windows Windows can be replaced from single pane to two double pane windows. This would reduce the heater expense and electrical by letting the sun penetrate the windows bringing natural light in.
Insulation Insulation can help keep the warm temperatures inside the house while the cooler temperatures are outside. This would help save on the heater energy.

CODE ANALYSIS

accessibility of light switches and outlets and shower entrances. Being aware of
the these codes before you being a project is critical in residential design.

Codes are an important part of the residential design because they address
safety, energy concerns, cost effectiveness of a project to name a few. Nowadays
codes also come into play as to the sustainability of a design and it's energy
efficiency. Modern designs are becoming much more energy efficient than most
early American designs. (chap.4 accessible routes, myclasses.artinstitute.edu,

Elements that could be modified to achieve more symmetry in the
layout would be to move the bed and end tables from being on a
diagonal to being square or flush with the wall. Some adjustment to
the placement of the chair and ottoman would also need to take
place. Pleasing proportions in this design is the complimentary size
of the chair and ottoman although the pieces are not sold as a set.
Because a King size bed is being used in the space it was important
to consider the size of the other furniture pieces being selected and
that there was still sufficient space to move about the room freely. I
feel this was achieved in this particular placement of the furniture.
Dominant forms in this layout would be the bed with the
subdominant forms being the chair, ottoman and end tables.

REMARKS:
Justification

The selection of the style of furniture was

influenced by the clients love of the Art
Nouveau period. You will see many of the
pieces have a curvilinear design. A play on color
and textures is evident in the fabric materials
selected keeping in line with the color palette
used in the design. The fabrics for the sofa and
chairs will be durable but will have a soft
smooth hand in the choice of leather used. The
bedroom vanity chair has a velvet finish and will
introduce an element of elegance bringing in a
pop of color and the ottoman will provide a fun
contrast to the chair. The bedding will be in a
cotton which will be easy to care for. The dining
table will be great for entertaining guests and is
comfortable for seating 6 but could
accommodate 8 if need be.

REMARKS:
JUSTIFICATION FOR LIGHTING AND FINISHES

The lighting and finishes selected for the Donohue project was done with the clients love of Art
Nouveau in mind. Curvilinear lines were used when able in the lighting selected. Lighting was
added to the built-in bookcase in order for the client to be able to showcase her artwork. The
paint colors selected play off the original color concept and to compliment the furniture pieces
that will be used in the design. A soft muted gray and purple was used in the living/dining area
to add some color but kept subtle for the client’s autistic son. A soft pink was used in the master
bedroom to give a feminine feel and compliment the furniture. The flooring chosen ties the room
together but is also a sustainable product. LED lights were selected to reduce energy
consumption and are also a sustainable product.

JUSTIFICATION
In selecting the finishes for the Donohue project I kept in mind the clients
love for art Nouveau and the color palette that was selected for the project.
In the master bedroom I focused on complementing the existing furniture
selected with darker blue accents pillows for the bedding and a creamy white
linen fabric for the drapery. I chose to have the drapery floor length with a
slight pillow to add to the femininity of the space. In the living room a
curved mirror was added above the buffet and a purple vase to add an accent
to the coffee table. Finally in the dining room a round blue gray rug was
added under the dining room that compliments the shape of the table along
with a gold vase for the center of the table.

Professor Kirkpatrick

My concept for my design stemmed from my client's information. I made a decision at the
beginning of this course to personally stretch myself and choose a color palette that I would not
normally gravitate to. The inspiration came from the lamp image I selected in the beginning and
the clients love of Art Nouveau. I had to keep in mind as well that she has an autistic son in
choosing my final colors to work with. In designing the rooms, I considered my client's hobbies
that she enjoys. Thinking through what might work well and what wouldn't work well. Did the
space flow, did it meet the needs and requirements of what I was asked to do? Was the color
palette pleasing and cohesive? Were the finishes going to compliment the furniture and mood I
was going after?

The schematic plans helped me to brain storm different possibilities of what could be done with
the space and ultimately come up with the best floor plan for my client, keeping in mind that
my first schematic may not be the best. One of my goals was to create a floor plan with as little
wasted space as possible. My biggest challenge I found was my office/workroom area. I ended
up reworking that space several times until the very end of this project. I feel my final design
was the best out of all the ones I presented thru the weeks. Light flowing through from the
South windows into the kitchen was a concern. What I came up with was to move the doors to
the North wall and make them sliding glass doors that would allow the light to pass thru
whether the doors were open or shut. It also created a more open flow so when my client
would entertain that space would be more user friendly.
The feedback I received from my professor was tremendously helpful as she challenged me to
consider different aspects of the rooms I was designing. Having an outside person look at and
critique your work is critical in coming up with the best design possible. Having to use AutoCAD
in the creation of my plans was also another tool that I will be able to take with me. I was very
nervous at the start of this class to tackle CAD but with the use of the tutorials provide and
tutoring, I found that I actually became more proficient by the end of the class and will
probably continue to use CAD to become a better drafter and use it in my current line of work. I
enjoyed getting to put together the presentation boards as well. I have not done many prior to
this course so it was great practice for me. This is also a skill that I will be using in my current
profession. Although a lot of work, I really enjoyed this course. I am glad I am taking away
something that can be used in my portfolio.
