    No. 2, janvierTanuary 1991 Editorial “elcome to Dragon no. 2: In the first Dragon (August 1988), we boldly and impulsively stated that we hoped to publish the magazine twice yearly. We can only apologize. and resolve not to hint at predictions in future! However, in spite of the apparent silence, a lot has been going on behind the scenes, and we have been considerably revising the concept of Dragon and organizing the articles to make your magazine as useful, informative and entertaining as possible. First, there will be a regular letter from the Captain: this ‘month (being its frst appearance) t contains quite alot of Information, but we would urge all members to read it carefully - it expresses a lot of points and opinions that are ‘shared by a malotity ofthe group. Our costume article deals with some basic clothing: underclothes, shirts and tublets, and there are many good ilustrations. You will find an article on what we know of St. George and his origins, and other contributions including our “usual” cipes and readers’ letters. We really wil ty to send you Dragon no. 3 as soon as possible, but have learned now rot to promise a date..! Please remember that Dragon's articles are all contributed by our members, and that Without your articles there willbe no Dragon. Without saying wwe are desperate, we should really ike a lot more copy to work with, even if it only consists of readers’ letters expressing their opinions: before embarking on thelr theses, contributors should remember to clear thei articles withthe editor! Nous nous excusons de vous avoir donné de faux espoirs, et promettons de ne plus falre de prévisions & ravenir! Malgré tout, en coulisses, ‘ous n'avons pas chémé: articles, projets, réflexions sur la forme et le contenu de Dragon ont été peu & peu Glaborés et structurés. Notre intention est de vous présenter un journal la fois ute et dvertssant. st alnsl que vous trouverez dans chaque numéro la “Lettre du Capitaine’, a lire attentivement car elle vous apporte des Informations sur la Compagnie de Saint-Georges, sur le travail accompli et les buts poursuivis. Y figurent également des remarques constructives pour avenir de notre groupe. Il y aura, bien entondu, des articles sur les costumes et sur uipement, accompagnés d'ilustrations. Désire2-vous ‘en savoir plus sur Saint Georges? Alors, lisez Dragon! Vous trouverez également des recettes, des lettres de nos membres, et quelques autres articles, récits ou llustrations. Bragon ‘A LETTER FROM THE CAPTAIN ‘Dear Comrades, First of all an enormous thank you to everyone for all your hard ‘work, good-bumoured co-operation and blood, sweat nd tears. Le Puy was once again a huge success, and although it was relly bard work [enjoyed this one mor than ever. My personal thanks to everyone for accepting the “military” discipline that was so absolutely necessary to get us through our gruelling schedule. Sadly, our companies (Mercenary Company of le Puy and (Company of St. George) had their first accident after five years: poor Peter Hobbs was accidentally shot during one ofthe night Skimishes, fortunately only witha black-powder charge and wad. [feel responsible for this. Although we are not a "Yighting” troup, we have paid a great desl of attention to safety and the ‘White Company's suggestions on security. This very sobering lesson bas taught us never to play "games" with other groups ~ or in fact anyone not sufficient drilled in our safety rules, Peter is now fully recovered and sends his heartfelt thanks to all who helped. “Many of our Companys ideas came to fruition asa result of le uy, and we have decided to attempt to reach the very high standard of some of the best American revolutionary and Civil ‘War groups. I's sad to realize just how far abead of British and (Continental groups they ar. ‘This year we would ask all members to contribute some time and cfr othe group's equipment: everyone without exception can o something, and if you doubt it, don't worry - we shall find you something todo! ‘Costumes and kit are coming along well, and it's gratifying to see members working enthusiastically, but please read our articles on costume before you make something: itis senseless to spend time and effort making something incorrectly or ‘unauthenially, when no more rouble would be needed to make it propery ~ and we must gt all the litle details right if we are to be taken seriously. We have banned modem items from our ‘camp, and this year should see the total elimination of them from our personal equipment ‘On te subject of authenticity, there have been complaints about smoking, and although it ie stating the obvious, members should not be seen smoking when in costume: it spoils the illusion forthe public and for other members of the group. Its ‘ally not good enough to light up during our camp fite evenings saying thatthe public ean no longer se - there is no doubt that it spoils it for others who get their pleasure from seeing an authentic a camp as possible: and we act as much for ourselves as forthe public! We ae looking for interesting events at really good sites where wwe want to be taken seriously as re-creators of historical atmosphere. Against a lot of difficulties, we bave to win the Support of museum and site staf, organizers and sponsors: this fakes alot of careful work - we cannot allow any members to let us down by offensive behaviour - and that means offensive to our clients, the public, and other members of our group, atthe site or travelling to and from it. Apris cing années dactivités sans incident, nous avons rmalheureusement eu & déplorer notre premier accident: Peter Hobbs a été bessé lors d'une de nos petites batailles nocturmes, ‘au Puy. Je me sens responsable de ce qu est arivé. Malgr toute Fratiention porte aux questions de sécurité, nous ne sommes pas ‘en mesure de tout contdler. Je réaffirme ici Timportance, pour ‘chacan, de connate les regis de sécurité et de sy conformer. Peter a eu de Ia chance, il ne se ressent pas de cet accident et ‘envoie ses chaleureux remerciements& tous ceux qui ont ad. Fort de Fexpérience acquse, dans le domaine de la reconstitution historique, nous entendons rechercher de plus en plus cette ‘authenticité qui caratérise certains groupes de reconstitut suéricains, parma les meilleur, et dont nous sommes encore, en Europe, malheureusement bien éoignés. Cette année, je veux mettre Paccent sur Pequipement - Péquipement personnal et celui du groupe - et attends de chacun qui appore a contebution. 1 {yadu travall pour tous, et si vous ne saver pas exactement quoi {aire nous vous donnerons toutes ls instructions nécessares! Souvenez-vous que tous les détails doivent étre exacts, si nous vvoulons qu'on nous prenne au sérieux en tant que groupe de reconsttition historique. Nous avons interdit tout modeme dans le camp, et nous voudrions désormais que équipement de chacun soit complétement authentique. En parlant dauthenticte, on ne peut pas ne pas mentionner le problame dercigarettes. Je suis sir que vous comprenez Darfaitement que vous ne devez pas dre vus en train de fumer en costume. Cela case Timage que nous vouloas donner au public, ‘et détuitausi [illusion pour les autres membres du groupe, preanent plaisir & voir, 24 heures sur 24, un camp ausst Authentique que possible. Noublions pas que nos reconstitution, ‘ous les faizons antant pou le public que pour nous! Nous sommes toujours a la recherche de manifestations intéessantes ainsi que de liewx adéquats nous permettant de recréer vértablement ne atmosphiére historique. Nous devons ‘gagner A notre cause des musées, des chiteau, des organisateurs, des sponsors. Ce niest pas Une tiche toujours facile. Datire attention sur le fait que notre comportement en tant que groupe et aussi en tant quindividus membres de ce groupe ex, cet, tues important.
