WORK INSTRUCTION
WORK INSTRUCTIONS FOR BRINELL HARDNESS TESTING MACHINE (SEC.- 07)

1. Initially to calibrate the machine, steps as under shall be followed :

2. Appropriate indentor shall be affixed to the upper jaw.

3. Standard test slab to be placed in the lower table.

4. The handle provided just below the testing table shall have to be reated clockwise to raise
the table until the dial gauge reads zero.

5. The lever on the left-hand side of the machine shall be made to move backward slowly
until it comes to stand still.

6. The lever shall be pulled back to its initial position after 15-20 seconds interval.

7. Such simultaneous operations shall be carried out on different positions on the test slab,
until the dial gauge reading is found to tally with the reading endorsed in the test slab.

8. The surface of the test sample shall be smooth or it shall be made smooth by grinding
some portion before conducting test.

9. The materials shall be placed on the table and process of operation of the machine shall
be the same as mentioned during calibration.

10. Three consecutive readings shall have to be recorded at three different positions on test
sample.

11. After obtaining the diameter, Brinel hardness number (BHN) shall be found out from the
charge provided in the machine.

12. Four hardness values shall be obtained and average hardness value shall be recorded.

13. It shall be ensured that there is no leakage of oil in the machine.

14. Jigs and fixtures shall be kept properly in the place earmarked for the same.

15. Machine shall be cleaned at the end of every day’s work.
