Writing my name

May 2018 by Heather

Mohammad, today you had painted a

beautiful picture and said that you were
finished. I said before you hang it up to
dry, you had to put your name on it.
You picked up a pencil and drew a few
squiggles and said here is my name. I asked if I could help you to write your
name and you said yes. I drew an ‘M’ on a different piece of paper to show
you what it looked like and then you drew another ‘M’ beside mine. I then
drew the o and you copied. We did this with every letter of your name with
you copying my letter. Whgen we had finished. I praised you up for writing
your name and you were very excited. “it’s my name. That is how my name
goes. It is hard to see the writing on the paper but if you look carefully you
can see most of your letters. You are learning that each letter is
formed in a certain way and when joined
together in a particular way the letters
or codes spell out your name.
You are lrearning that languages
and symbols are systems for
representing and communicating
information, experiences and ideas.
We need to encourage you to practice
writing your name and other letters of the
alphabet in readiness for you starting school at the end of this year.
