PARTICLE & FLUID MECHANICS: FLUID DYNAMICS: IDEAL FLOW

PROBLEM SOLVING

1. Water flows through a 400 ft pipeline at a rate of 500

gal/min. The first and the last 100 ft of the line are 6-in
diameter pipe, while the middle section consists of 4.24-in
diameter pipe. Find the velocity in each section.

2. For the branch pipe shown, water enters the pipe at a rate
of 15 L/s. Assuming that the velocity in both branches is the
same, determine: (D1 = 50 mm, D2 = 20 mm, D3 = 30 mm)
a. Velocity in the pipe
b. Velocity in each branch
c. Volumetric flow rate in each branch

3. Carbon tetrachloride (sg=1.59) at 200C flows in a 50 mm

diameter with a velocity 2.5 m/s and in a 75 mm diameter
with velocity 1.85 m/s. These pipes join, and the flow
continues in a 90 mm pipe. Determine the outlet
a. flow velocity;
b. volumetric flow rate; and
c. the mass flow rate.
4. A pipeline leads from one reservoir to another reservoir
whose water surface is 12 m lower. For a discharge of 0.6
m3/s, determine the energy losses in J/kg.

5. What is the cost at 2.50 Php per KW-hr to pump water

through a 4-in Schedule 40 steel pipe as shown? The friction
loss along the line is 140 ft-lbf/lbm and the flow rate is 6000
gal/hr.
