Never a close
shave
By Carol Saffer

He may be the ‘Scruffy Fella’ but it has won a Moorabool

local a prize.
Ballan small business owner hirsute Nigel Bullamore took
out first prize in the full beard category at the third Ballarat
Beard and Stache Competition.
The annual event founded in 2016, organised by the
Ballarat Beard and Moustache Union in conjunction with
Ballarat Heritage Weekend, celebrating all forms of facial
hair was held at Hop Temple in Ballarat.
As the winner, Mr Bullamore, 42, will have his name
engraved on the perpetual metal beard trophy hand-
crafted by the Sovereign Hill blacksmith.
Fascinated with moustaches and beards since a kid, Nigel
began his furry faced phase as soon as his own fuzz and
stubble started growing. He has not been clean-shaven
since.
As a first-time entrant Mr Bullamore, who faced a strong
competition of around 50 bearded contestants, says he was
“surprised, chuffed and humbled” when he was announced
as the winner.
“I didn’t think I had a chance in hell as there were some
epic beards in the competition,” he said.
Mr Bullamore’s beard took four years to grow to its current
length. Before the event he had a “blow dry to stop if from
going boofy.”
Valiant Barbers’ owner Jonathan Cannizaro trims Mr
Bullamore’s beard tidying the split ends, two to three times
a year at his Heidelberg salon. He takes about an hour to
give him a haircut and beard trim.
“He has the biggest beard I have ever cut in my life,” says
Mr Cannizaro.
Mr Bullamore says grooming his full beard is a necessity
between visits to the barber shop. In August 2017 he and his
partner took a start-up leap of faith launching Scruffy Fella,
a brand of men’s grooming products and accessories.
In March this year Scruffy Fella took a pop-up shop to the
Ballan Autumn Festival.
Mr Bullamore said response at the festival and the Ballan
Farmers’ Market has been positive.
Now that’s a beard! – Nigel Bullamore shows off his award winning, and well groomed beard, hardly a Scruffy Fella! “Many of our male customers tell us ‘thank goodness there
