The novel Counting by 7’s by Holly Goldberg Sloan communicates the theme of

overcoming grief which is shown through the protagonist, Willow Chance. This is
shown when Willow was in grief about her adoptive parents (Roberta and Jimmy
Chance) that passed away in a car accident. Willow had to overcome her grief a way
to get to back together. Throughout the novel we see her change as she finds new
friends who help her get over and overcome the grief she is facing. Willow’s journey of
finding people is quite a main concept of Counting By 7’s.
