AMERICAN POWS THAT
WERE CAPTURED IN THE
VIETNAM WAR ARE
RELEASED FROM PRISON IN
HANOI, NORTH VIETNAM,
AND ON BOARD TO THE U.S.
American POWS
AFTER SIGNING A PEACE AGREEMENT
WITH BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH
VIETNAM, THE U.S. FINALLY GOT ALL
OF THEIR PRISONERS OF WAR BACK
FROM THE NORTH VIETNAM ON 29TH
MARCH 1973. MOST OF NORTH
VIETNAM’S MAIN PRISONS ARE
LOCATED IN HANOI AND ONE OF THEM
IS FAMOUSLY KNOWN BY OUTSIDER AS
“THE ZOO.”
ON THE RELEASING DAY, SOME OF THE
WESTERN REPORTERS WERE INVITED
TO THE PRISON AT HANOI. REPORTERS
WERE NOT ALLOW TO ASK ANY OF THE
POWS DURING THE TIME THAT THEY
WERE THERE DUE TO THE RULES FROM
THE NORTH VIETNAM OFFICIALS. ALL
OF THE PRISONERS WERE RELEASED ON
THAT DAY EXCEPT CAPTAIN ROBERT
WHITE WHO WILL BE RELEASE ON THE
NEXT WEEK. AFTER ARRIVING AT
CLARK AIRBASE IN PHILIPPINES,
BEFORE ON BOARD TO AMERICA, THE
RELEASED PRISONERS TOLD
REPORTERS THAT THEY WERE BEATEN
AND TORTURED BY THE NORTH VIETNAM
OFFICIALS TO MAKE AN ANTI-WAR
STATEMENT. THE STORIES THAT WERE
REPORTED BY THE POWS WERE
EXTREMELY DIFFERENT FROM THE
REPORT THOSE OFFICIAL REPORTS.
FURTHERMORE, WE GOT A CHANCE TO
INTERVIEW ONE OF THE POWS WHO WAS
RELEASE ON THE 29TH, GEORGIA
LATELLA.

LATELLA WAS CAPTURED ON 6TH
OCTOBER 1972, FIVE MINUTES AFTER
HE HITS THE GROUND, AND TAKEN TO
CAM TO CAMP IN HANOI. HE TOLD US
THAT CAPTURED IN THE CAMP WAS THE
MOST DIFFICULT PART OF HIS LIFE,
BUT HE KNEW THAT SOMEHOW HE WAS
GOING TO GO BACK HOME AND RELIED
ON HIS FAITH. MOREOVER, THE
EXPERIENCE THAT HE GAINED IS AN
EXPERIENCE THAT HE WILL NEVER
FORGET. THOSE POWS WHO COME BACK THE LONG PROTEST FOR DEMOCRACY OF THE

INSIDE THE PALACE. ANOTHER GROUP OF PROTESTORS

CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE NORTH WERE ALSO HIDING AT THE ZOO NEARBY. THE FIGHT
COMMUNIST VIETNAM WHICH MAY BECOME BIGGER AND AT LEAST 77 PEOPLE WERE
ALLOW THEM TO SPREAD COMMUNISM KILLED AND ABOUT 100 PEOPLE WERE INJURED.
THIS IS THE SORROWFUL DAY FOR THAI CITIZENS.
TO OTHER NEARBY COUNTRIES AS
AFTER THE DEATHS OF THESE PEOPLE, THERE HAD
WELL. AS THAILAND IS ONE OF THE

MINISTER OF THAILAND. AFTER THANOM HAD LEFT
HIS POSITION, THERE HAS BEEN AN INVESTIGATION
ABOUT HIM CORRUPTING THE COUNTRY. FURTHERMORE,
NOW THAILAND IS A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY WHICH
SATISFIES THE PROTESTOR AND MANY PEOPLE IN THE
COUNTRY. THE COUNTRY WOULD BE MOVING FORWARD
WITHOUT ANY RIOTS AND PROTESTS. FURTHERMORE,
THIS MAY BE ONE OF THE DAY THAT THAI PEOPLE
MAY NOT FORGET AND ALSO REMIND THEM OF HOW
TERRIFYING THE FIGHT WAS.

dictatorship of Thanom Kittikachon
had come to an end on the 14th
October 1973 along with a sorrowful
tragedy which killed many university
students’ lives.

AFTER THE BANGKOK METROPOLITAN
ADMINISTRATION HAD BEEN
ESTABLISHED ON DECEMBER 1972, ON
1ST JAN 1973 CHAMNARN
YUWABOON WAS CHOSEN TO BE THE
FIRST GOVERNOR OF BANGKOK
METROPOLITAN ADMINISTRATION.
On December 1972, the Bangkok
Metropolitan Administration or as known
as BMA is established, but not until 1
January 1973 that becomes fully operational
with a governor and officials. On the first of
January 1973, Chamnarn Yuwaboon was the
first one to become Bangkok governor. The
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is
the local government of Bangkok helps
formulate and create policies to manage
Bangkok. The BMA comes with a promise to
maintain laws and orders and also promote
and support the safety and security of lives
and properties in Bangkok. Furthermore, it
also maintains the functioning of road,
waterways and drainage systems. .
Basically, the BMA organises and manage
all things in Bangkok from Law and policies
to hygiene and health services for people.
Since the BMA needs to handle many public
services and accommodates people, it
separates into many smaller departments.

By having BMA, Bangkok would become
more centralize and organize. The Thai
people would reflect positively on the
opening of BMA because it brings a lot of
advantages and benefits for the
Bangkokian. The BMA provides many
accommodation and facilities for people in
Bangkok such as public transport, public
places, schools, education services and
economics of Bangkok, since many
accommodations are provided, so people
would move into the city and there will be
more business dealing. Furthermore, the
BMA also promotes for democracy by
allowing the Bangkokian to votes for their
governor instead of letting the officials do
it.

SOUTH VIETNAM AGREE
TO SIGN THE PARIS PEACE

The long conflict between the North
and South Vietnam, which is
supported by the US, had come to an
end when North Vietnam, South
Vietnam and the US agree to sign
the Paris Peace accord in order to
end the war and bring peace.

On the 27th January 1973 the US, South
Vietnam and North Vietnam sign the Paris
Peace Agreement to end the Vietnam war and
restore peace to the country. Since the US and
the USSR are having Cold War, which later
leads into the proxy war. The proxy wars were
involved by countries like Vietnam and Korea.
In Vietnam, it is separated into two groups
which are the North Vietnam and South
Vietnam. The North Vietnam, which is a
communist, is supported by the USSR. On the
other hand, the South Vietnam, which is a
capitalist is supported by the US. The war cost
a lot of life and many damages. To end the
war, the Paris Peace Agreement is created. As
a result of the Paris Peace Agreement, the US
withdraw their troop from Vietnam follow by
the returned of the US POWs in North
Vietnam. Since Thailand is one of the
countries that supports for the US in Vietnam
war. Thai people may view this as one of the
good news because the war had ended and
people are not needed to be kill anymore.
Without the US, Thai people may have been
influenced by the communist Vietnam and
become one of the communist country.
However, during this time Thailand is a
strong nationalist country with the
dictatorship of Thanom Kittikachon.
