PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT CLASS -- XII

WAVE OPTICS

1. A slit of width d is illuminated by red light of wavelength 6500 Å. For what value of d will the first
minimum fall at an angle of diffraction of 30°? (0.0013 mm)

2. A laser operates at a frequency of 3 X 1014 Hz and has an aperture of 10-2 m. What will be the angular
spread? (10-4 radians)

3. Calculate the distance that a beam of light of wavelength 500 nm can travel without significant
broadening, if the diffraction aperture is 3 mm wide. (18 m)

4. Light of wavelength 5 X 10-7 m is diffracted by an aperture of width 2 X 10-3 m. For what distance
traveled by the diffracted beam does the spreading due to diffraction becomes greater than the width of
the aperture? (8 m)

5. A screen is placed at a distance of 1 m from a narrow slit. The slit is illuminated by light of wavelength
5000 Å. If the first minimum on either side of the central maximum is at a distance of 5 mm from it, find
the width of the slit. (0.01 cm)

6. Two polarizing sheets are placed with their planes parallel, so that light intensity transmitted is
maximum. Through what angle must either sheet be turned so that intensity drops to half the maximum
value? (±45°; ±135°)

7. A polarizer and an analyzer are oriented so that the maximum light is transmitted. What is the fraction of
the maximum light transmitted when analyzer is rotated through (a) 30° and (b) 60°? (0.25)

8. Yellow light is incident on the smooth surface of a block of dense flint glass for which the refractive index
is 1.6640. Find the polarizing angle. Also find the angle of refraction. (59°, 31°)

9. Two coherent sources of intensity ratio of 100:1 interfere. Deduce the ratio of intensity of maxima and
minima in the interference pattern. (3:2)

10. If two slits in Young’s experiment have widths in the ratio 1:9, deduce the ratio of intensity of the maxima
and minima in the interference pattern. (4:1)

11. In Young’s double slit experiment the distance of the screen from two slits is 1.0 m. When light of
wavelength 6000Å is allowed to fall on the slits, the width of the fringes obtained on the screen is 2.0
mm. Determine (a) distance between the slits; (b) the width of fringe if the wavelength of light is
4800Å. (0.3 mm, 1.6 mm)

12. Two slits are made 1 mm apart and a screen is placed 1 m away. What is the fringe separation light of
wavelength 500 nm is used? What should be the width of each slit to obtain 10 maxima of the double slit
pattern within the central maxima of the single slit pattern? (0.5 mm, 0.2 mm)
13. In a Young’s double slit experiment, the slits are separated by 0.28 mm and the screen is placed 1.4 m
away. This distance between the central bright fringe and the fourth bright fringe is measured to be 1.2
cm. Determine the wavelength of light used in the experiment. (6000Å)

14. In Young’s experiment, the fringe width with light of wavelength 6000Å is 2.0 mm. What will be the
fringe width if the entire apparatus is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.33. (1.5 mm)

15. In Young’s experiment, the fringes are formed at a distance of 1 m from double slit of separation 0.12 mm.
Calculate the distance of third dark band from the centre for wavelength 6000Å. (2.5 cm)

16. The ratio of intensity at maxima and minima in the interference pattern is 25:9. What will be the ratio of
the width of the two slits in Young’s interference experiment? (16:1)
