Why Should I Use DC++ in ACTIVE Mode (Last Updated 17th April 2018)
Why Should I Use DC++ in ACTIVE Mode (Last Updated 17th April 2018)
For SHORT SUMMARY just read up the "NOTES" and then skip to "How to be in Active
mode ?"
The reason we,Pilani Pirates, are clamouring for everyone to use active mode is
because this will reduce download requests being made by passive users as many
files are already there on DC
but most of them are with passive users and hence result in unnecessary requests.
If you are a passive user, we request you to please ask once on main chat before
requesting.
On the other hand, if you are active user and if you see someone requesting
something on the main chat, please do a simple DC search and post the magnet link
on the main chat for the passive user.
Thanks in advance.

-----------
In passive connection mode, DC++ will only make outbound connections to other
users.
All searches will be sent through the hub, and search results will be returned
through the hub as well.
DC++ will return a maximum of 5 search hits for a passive user. (Search results for
Passive users are less.)
NOTE 1-->Passive users may not able to download from other passive users. So better
to be in Active mode.
NOTE 2---> Search results for passive users only come from active users, i.e. they
can't see the search results from passive users.
NOTE 4-----> It is also possible that you can't use DC++ in Active mode, if that is
the case then you have to use Passive mode ONLY.

Question: What is the difference between Passive and active?
Answer: Passive does not allow direct connection to other computers and
requires a third party to be involved for anything to work.
Basically, if you are in active mode then you can connect to any user
in the hub, weither they are active or passive.
If you are in passive mode, you can only connect directly to active
users.
2 passive users cannot transfer files to each other it would require
access than DC allows. [Complicated, inshort 2 passive users can't share files to
each other]
Answer: Active mode is much less stressful on the hub itself. Active mode
allows the client itself to do searches and contact the other
users for files, basically as DC says, it makes a direct connection to
the other computer. In Passive mode, the hub must
always be involved for each packet of information. Take out the middle
man, thats active mode..
In regular DC++,
Settings->Connectivity->ManualConfiguration->Click on Active mode [ After
unchecking "Let DC++ determine the best connectivity settings" ]
In ApexDC++,
Settings->Connection settings->Click on Direct Connection [ After Unchecking
"Enable automatic connection type detection" ]
For other clients the procedure is similar.
