Asphalt Tests

Test 01 - Bitumen Extraction Test and grading (ASTM D2172)

Centrifuge method

Main Apparatus

a) Oven, capable of maintaining the temperature at 110° C plus or minus 5°C

b) Pan, flat and of appropriate size to heat the test specimens.

c) Balance or scales capable of weighing a sample to an accuracy of 0.05% of its mass.

d) Extraction apparatus, consisting of a bowl and an apparatus in which the bowl may be revolved at
controlled variable speeds up to 3600 revolutions per minute. Refer to Figure 10.4.4.

Note. Accessories must be fitted to the apparatus for catching and disposing of the solvent. The
apparatus preferably shall be installed in a hood or an effective surface exhaust system to provide
ventilation.

Test 02 - Marshal Stability and Flow Test (ASTM D1559)

Main Apparatus

1. Specimen Mold Assembly

2. Specimen Extractor

3. Compaction Hammer

4. Compaction Pedestal

5. Specimen Mold Holder

6. Breaking Head

7. Loading Jack

8. Heating Device

9. Mixing apparatus

10. Water bath (at least 6in. deep and capable of maintaining a temperature of 60°C (140°F)

11. Air Bath


Test 03 - Density of Compacted Bituminous Mixtures (ASTM D2726 / D979)

Specimens may be either laboratory-molded bituminous mixtures or from bituminous pavements

Main Apparatus

1. Balance, with ample capacity, and with sufficient sensitivity to enable bulk specific gravities of
the specimens to be calculated to at least four significant figures,

2. Water Bath, capable of maintaining a temperature of 25°C (77°F) for immersing the specimen in
water while suspended, equipped with an overflow outlet for maintaining a constant water level. The
use of an overflow outlet is mandatory.
