Ability to work in a joint service/civilian environment including

the understanding of service terminology and writing.

I have worked in a joint service/civilian environment in both the Department of

Defence and the New South Wales Police Force. I liaise daily with a variety of service
and civilian employees at numerous levels.

I currently work for the Department of Defence and am aware of the differing
conditions of service, including Australian Defence Force (ADF) members being
under the Defence Act 1903, and civilians as Australian Public Service (APS)
employees being under the Public Service Act 1999, and the consequential
requirements of service and civilian employees. I am also familiar with the Cox
Sherman Report which provides guidance for APS employee supervisors of ADF
personnel, and I refer customers to this when required. I believe this awareness and
mindfulness of the differences allows me to work efficiently in such an environment.

Due to continuous contact with several areas of Defence and the people that work
within these areas, my knowledge of service terminology has increased significantly
within a short amount of time. Exposure to the functions and business practices of
these areas has given me a broad understanding of technical Defence processes and
the use of acronyms. I attend training sessions where they are available to learn
more about the military and service environment, and I believe this knowledge of
the broader Defence picture also assists me in working in the Defence environment.

I keep a copy of the Defence Writing Standards (ADFP102) on my desk to assist in

writing, and as part of my job write reports on a weekly basis for submission to
LTCOL / CMDR / WGCDR / EL1 levels and above for approval. I believe this
demonstrates my ability to understand and apply service terminology and writing.
