This document contains a 4 problem machine design examination covering topics like stress, strength, and load calculations for various mechanical components. Problem 1 involves calculating forces in rods and sizing rod diameters. Problem 2 calculates beam stresses and applies a safety factor. Problem 3 determines link dimensions for different load conditions and lifespans. Problem 4 involves calculating safe loads on a pinned link for various load scenarios and applying a lifespan safety factor. The examination was prepared by an assistant professor and approved by the College Dean.

First Examination
Problem 1.0 (30 pts)
A] Find the force in each rod in the figure below. E 1 = E2. The 2300 kg mass can be considered rigid. B] Considering only the same forces obtained in [A], what would be the diameter of each rod? Material for rod A is AISI C1030 as rolled, whereas rod B is made up of AISI C 1015 annealed.
Problem 2.0 (30 pts)
A] A simply supported beam is 900 mm long and carries a 1350 N load at the center. Find the maximum flexural stress for each beam. E = 103,400 MPa. B] If beam is made up of AISI 3115 DOQT 300 0F, what factor of safety is to be applied based on the ultimate and yield strength?
Problem 3.0 (40 pts)
The load on the link shown is a maximum of 10 kips, repeated and reversed. The link is forged from AISI C1020, as rolled, and it has a ¼ in. drilled hole on the center line of the wide side. Let h = 2b and FS = 1.5. Determine b and h at the hole for A] indefinite life B] 50,000 repetitions of the maximum load C] indefinite life but with a ground and polished surface. Problem 4.0 ( 50 pts) A] The link shown has a vertical load applied at its center C and the fit of the pins is such that it acts as a simple beam, L = 8in. and other dimensions include D = 3/8 in. , a = 9/16in., t = 5/16 in., b = 9/16 in., h = 1.125 in. The material is stainless steel 430 annealed. For FS = 2, determine the safe load F if it is (a) repeated and reversed (b) repeatedly varying from 0 to F (c) repeatedly varying from F = -W to F = 3W. Consider points at B and C. B] For a definite life of 105 cycles, what would be the safe load F to be applied on the link?
