It is established that we, as Muslims, have a rich historical tradition that can be authentically
traced back to the blessed Messenger of Allah, Muhammad bin ‘Abdillah ‫ﷺ‬. These reports
span a variety of subjects and topics, ranging from the most fundamental theological
doctrines to the simplest details pertaining to his personal life ‫ﷺ‬. When looking at the Quran,
one finds Allah addressing His Prophet in many different contexts.

Allah, for example, addresses His Prophet in the Quran saying:

O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of glad tidings and a
warner (45) And a caller to Allah, by His permission, and an illuminating torch (46)
[Al-Ahzab]
Allah also describes him in the Quran saying:
Indeed, there has been a great example for you in the Messenger of Allah, for anyone
who has hope is in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.
[Al-Ahzab; 21]
Allah, in the Quran, also commands Prophet Muhammad:
Say[to the believers], [O Muhammad]: "If you love Allah, then follow me, so that
Allah shall love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
[Al-‘Imran: 31]

Thus, it is evident from these verses (and many more) that obeying and following this man is
the true source of victory, success and guidance in this life and the Hereafter. Not only did he
convey the Message as ordained by Allah, but he has also set an example of perfection as a
leader, father, husband, warrior, and virtuous human being.

In this book, I have compiled around 40 hadiths that display the Prophet’s character and
wisdom pertaining to his marital life, hoping to benefit the English-speaking Muslims.

2
I have ensured that they are all authentic (Sahih) reports. Thus, if the report is from Sahih Al-
Al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, then that shall be enough to display its authenticity.
If the report is not from Sahih Al-Al-Bukhari or Muslim, then I have quoted the opinions of
authoritative Muslim Hadith scholars who deemed the report to be authentic, while doing a
thorough analysis of the report’s isnad myself, as well.

When citing the books: Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Al-Nasa’i, Sunan Abi
Dawud, Jami’ Al-Tirmidhi and Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, I relied upon the numbering provided on
https://sunnah.com/ to make the reports accessible to the reader.

When citing reports from Musnad Ahmed, I relied upon the numbering provided by the
‫ الرسالة‬edition of the Musnad.

When citing reports from Sahih Ibn Hibban, I relied upon the numbering provided by the first
publication of Sheikh Shu’ayb Al-Arnaut’s edition of Sahih Ibn Hibban.

Looking through these reports, one immediately recognizes that volumes of literature could
be written merely expounding on the different lessons and values contained in them.

Hence, if you, as a reader, find any benefit in this book, then I request that you make duaa’
for me, my parents and loved ones, and the rest of the Ummah of Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬.

I. The Virtues of Marriage
1. ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud said:
We were with the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬while we were young, and we barely had any wealth. So,
Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬once said, "O young men! Whoever among you is financially able
to get married, then he should do so. Indeed, it helps one lower his gaze and protects
him from adultery. Whoever is not able to marry, then he should fast, for that will
help him control his desire. 1

2. Anas bin Malik said:

A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬inquiring about
the Prophet’s acts of worship. When they were informed, they seemed to consider it
insufficient, and they said: "What are we compared to the Prophet? His past and
forthcoming sins have all been forgiven."
Then one of them said: "I will stay up all night praying for the rest of my life.”
The other said: "I will fast throughout the year, and I shall never break my fast."
The third said: "I will avoid women, and I shall never get married."
Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬later came to them and said, "Are you the same people who said
such-and-such? By Allah, I am more conscious and fearful of Allah than you; yet I
fast and I break my fast, I pray and I sleep, and I also marry women. Whoever does
not follow my Sunnah is not from me. 2

One day, a group of Sahabis told the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬: "O Messenger of Allah, the affluent have
taken all the reward, for they pray as we pray, fast as we fast, and they give a lot of
charity by virtue of their wealth."
The Messenger of Allah responded: "Has not Allah given you many opportunities for
charity? Indeed, every tasbeehah [saying: ‫ ]سبحان هللا‬is a charity, every takbeerah
[saying: ‫ ]هللا أكبر‬is a charity, and every tahmeedah [saying: ‫ ]الحمد هلل‬is a charity, and
every tahleelah [saying: ‫ ]ال إله إال هللا‬is a charity. And enjoining what is good is a
charity, and forbidding an evil is a charity, and in your sexual acts there is a charity
as well."
They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, does one of us get rewarded for fulfilling his
desires?"
He ‫ ﷺ‬replied: "Do you not see that if he were to act upon it in haram then he would
be worthy of punishment? Likewise, if he were to act upon it in halal then he would
be worthy of reward. 4

II. Choosing a Spouse

5. Jabir b. ‘Abdillah said:

I was with Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬in an expedition, and when we returned, I wanted to
hurry, while I was on a slow camel. A rider followed me, and I looked back and noticed
that the rider was the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬.

He asked me: "What makes you in such a hurry?"

I replied: "I am newly married."

He asked: "Did you marry a virgin or a matron?"

I replied: "A matron."

He asked: "Why didn't you marry a virgin with whom you could play, and she could
play with you?"

Then, when we approached Medina, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said, "Wait until the night has come
before you enter your homes, so that the ladies with unkempt hair may comb their
hair, and those whose husbands have been absent may shave their pubic hair." 5

something in the eyes of the Ansar….”

8. Thabit Al-Bunani said:

I was once with Anas bin Malik while a daughter of his was present. Anas said: "A
woman came to Allah's Apostle and presented herself to him, saying: “O Messenger of
Allah, have you any need in me [through marriage]?

Thereupon Anas's daughter said, "What a shameless lady she was! Shame! Shame!"
Anas replied: "She was better than you; she had a liking for the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, so she
presented herself to him for marriage." 8

A divorced/widowed woman must not be married until she is consulted, and a virgin
must not be married until her permission is sought.

He said: That she remains silent.9

10. `Umar bin Al-Khattab said:

"When my daughter, Hafsa bint `Umar, lost her husband Khunais bin Hudhaifa As-
Sahrni, who was one of the companions of Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬who had fought in the
battle of Badr and had died in Medina, I met `Uthman bin `Affan and suggested that he
should marry Hafsa saying: "If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa bint `Umar.”

Uthman said: “I will think it over.”

I waited for a few days, and then he later told me: “It has become apparent to me that I
should not get married right now.”

I later met Abu Bakr and said: “If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsa bint `Umar.” He
kept quiet and did not give me any reply, and I was more angered with him than I was
with `Uthman.

Some days later, Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬asked for her hand in marriage and I married her to
him. Later, Abu Bakr asked: "Perhaps you were angry with me when you offered Hafsa to
me for marriage and I gave no reply to you?”

I said: “Yes.”

Abu Bakr said: “Nothing prevented me from accepting your offer except that I had learnt
that Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬had mentioned her [for marriage], and I would never disclose
the secret of Allah's Messenger. Had he not married her, I surely would have accepted
your offer.” 10

A man came to the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and said: “I have found a woman of great status and beauty,

He said: “No.”

He came again to him, and the Prophet prohibited him again. He came to him a third time,
and then the Prophet said: Marry the amiable child-bearing woman, for I shall
outnumber the nations through you.”11

The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said: "Every one of you is a guardian and every one of you

a guardian of her husband's house, and she shall be asked about it. A slave is a
guardian of his master's property, and he shall be asked about it. Indeed, all of you

Safiya, the wife of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, told me that she went to the Prophet one night to visit
him in the mosque while he was in I’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. She talked to
him for a while, then she got up to go back home, and the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬accompanied her
back. When they reached the gate of the mosque near the door of Umm Salama, two
Ansari passed by greeting the Messenger of Allah.
He then told them: “Hold on for a second…. She is my wife, Safiya bint Huyai."
Both of them said: "Subhan Allah!” and they felt bad.
The Prophet said to them: "Satan flows through the body of the son of Adam just as
blood does. I was afraid that Satan would insert an evil thought into your minds." 18

While the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬was at one of his wives’ houses, a mother of the believers sent him a
meal in a dish. The wife who had the Prophet in her house that day struck the hand of the
servant, causing the dish to fall and break. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬gathered the broken pieces of
the dish and then started collecting the bits of food, which had been in the dish and said,
"Your mother was jealous."

Then he kept the servant till a sound dish was brought from the wife who broke the dish.
He gave the sound dish to the wife whose dish had been broken, and he left the broken
one at the house where it was broken. 19

20. Umar narrates, regarding the incident of Hudaybiyah :

When the writing of the peace treaty was concluded, Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said to his
companions: "Get up and slaughter your sacrifices and get your heads shaved."

By Allah none of them got up, and the Prophet repeated his order thrice. When none of
them got up, he left them and went to Um Salama and told her of the people's response
towards command. Um Salama said: "O Prophet of Allah! Do you want your orders to be
carried out? Go out and don't say a word to anybody until you have slaughtered your
sacrifice and called your barber to shave your head."

19
Sahih Al-Bukhari [5225], Sunan Al-Nasa’i [3955], Sunan Abi Dawud [3567]

13
So, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬went out and did not talk to anyone of them till he slaughtered his
sacrifice and called his barber to shave his head. Seeing that, the companions of the
Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬got up, slaughtered their sacrifices and started shaving the heads of one
another. They were in such a rush to the extent that some were about to slaughter each
other by accident.20

greeted her, and then rode with her until they rested. Thus, 'A'isha missed the company of
the Prophet, and when they sat down, A'isha felt jealous. She put her foot in the grass and
said: “O Allah, let a scorpion sting me or a snake bite me, but regarding Your Messenger,
I cannot say a thing.”25

35. A’isha said:
Divine revelation to Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬first came in the form of good dreams, such that
he would not see a dream except that it became true just as broad daylight [comes after
the night]. Then, he was made to love seclusion, and he used to go to the cave of Hira
alone where he would worship Allah continuously for many nights before he’d return to
his family.
He used to continuously take food with him, and then he’d come back to Khadija to
resupply again. One day, the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira.
The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬replied, "I do not know
how to read." The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬added: "The angel then embraced me, and he pressed
me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and asked me to
read again, and I replied: “I do not know how to read.” Thereupon, he embraced me
again and pressed me a second time until I could not bear it any more. He then
released me and asked me to read again, but I similarly replied: “I do not know how
to read” Thereupon he caught me for the third time and embraced me, and then
released me and said: “Read in the name of your Lord, who has created ;created
man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous."
Then Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬returned with his heart severely trembling. Then, he went to
Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him until his
fear dissipated. After that, he told her everything that had happened, and he said: "I
feared for my life." Khadija replied, "Never! By Allah, He shall never disgrace you. You
keep good relations with your kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests
generously and assist those affected by calamities."
Khadija then took him to her cousin Waraqa bin Nawfal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who
was a Christian monk who used to write the scripture in Hebrw during the Jahilyyah. He
used to write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was
an old man, and he had lost his eyesight by then. Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the
story of your nephew, O my cousin!"

36. Anas bin Malik said:

The son of Abu Talba, who was born of Umm Sulaim died, and Umm Sulaim said to the
members of her family: “Do not tell Abu Talha anything about his son until I do.”

Abu Talha then came home, and she presented to him the supper. He ate it and then drank
water. She had also adorned herself in a manner she had not done previously.

He then had a sexual intercourse with her, and when she saw that he was satisfied, she
said: “Abu Talha, if some people borrowed something from another family, and then the
family asked for its return, would they be able to resist returning it?”

He said: “No.”

She said: “Then seek the reward in your son from Allah …. [due to his death].”

He was furious, and he said: “You waited until I had had sexual intercourse with you,
then you informed me about my son ?!”

He went to Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬and informed him of what had happened. Thereupon
Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬said: “May Allah bless both of you in that night you spent with
each other.”

Anas said: She then became pregnant, and Allah's Messenger was in the course of a
journey, and she was with him. When the Messenger of Allah came near Medina, he did
not enter it at night, and they settled at its outskirts. At that moment, she began to feel the
contractions of delivery.

Abu Talha remained with her, and the Messenger of Allah proceeded into Medina.

Abu Talha said: “O Lord, you know that I love to go with Your Messenger wherever he
goes, in and out….but I have now been detained as You can see.”

Umm Sulaim said: “Abu Talha, I do not feel as much pain I had previously felt, so let us
proceed. So they proceeded, and she felt the contractions of delivery as they entered
Medina. A child was born to them, and my mother said to me: “O Anas, no one should
nurse him until you go to Allah's Messenger tomorrow morning.”
