Honorable Senators and Representatives:
New Ulm Schools hosted a legislative panel with our school board on December 7th. One of our many topics to discuss
was the high amount of Special Education (SPED) paperwork our teachers are required to complete to meet state and
federal guidelines. Our desire was to minimize the paperwork so that the teachers who are trained and properly licensed
can provide the quality and engaging instruction for these challenging students. Too often, they are overburdened with
paperwork and paraprofessionals are working with the students.
We were tasked to come up with data and information on what the major differences are between the federal and state
requirements. We have compiled this information and it is attached for your review.
Our purpose is to remove many of the additional testing and paperwork requirements set upon us by the state so teacher
time can be better served working with the students in need. We would also like to retain our SPED staff and not lose
them to burnout.
If you have questions about the information, or would like to meet with a group of teachers and SPED staff, please let me
know.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
