Question 1

Artificial lift is a process used on oil wells to increase pressure within the reservoir
and encourage oil to the surface. When the natural drive energy of the reservoir
is not strong enough to push the oil to the surface, artificial lift is employed to
recover more production.
It has been estimated that in 1994 there was a world inventory of more than
900,000 producing wells. Only 7% of these flowed naturally while the remaining
93% required some form of artificial lift.
Of the approximately one million oil and gas wells producing in the world, roughly 5% flow naturally—leaving nearly
all of the world’s oil and gas production reliant on efficient artificial lift operations.
