no better time to step back in
gratitude of Mother Earth herself.

ach May, our letterboxes fill with
catalogues advertising the perfect
way to say thanks to Mum. So come
Mother’s Day we try our best to show
appreciation for all she does with flowers,
gifts and Sunday brunch. Mother’s Day is an
acknowledgment of the women who have
nurtured us. It’s a resounding moment of
gratitude for all the times she has picked you
up from ballet, tied your shoes and hugged
you as you cried.
At a time when sustainability is at the
forefront of global consciousness, Mother’s
Day also presents a chance to give back
to the mother of us all: Mother Earth.
While overlooking your maternal caregiver
completely in favour of a ‘thank you’ rain
dance would make you a terrible person, there
are countless ways to honour your mother and
the planet synchronously. Both play vital roles
in your life and will continue to do so for the

cheese platter is always well received.
When it comes to piecing together a cheese
platter, there is no right or wrong way to go
about the task, but according to Peter Gross,
Queensland’s premier expert on all things
cheese and founder of Black Pearl Epicure, as
long as you love it, include it.
While summer is for entertaining, in
Autumn we begin to slow things down as we
shift into the cooler months and this is the
perfect time to strip back your usual cheese
offering for the seasonal change.
“All over the world, Autumn has always been
the best time of year to produce cheese as it
is the time where the last flush of grass, the
contented cows and the weary cheese maker
combine to make the best possible cheese.”
says Peter.
When asked what the essentials for any
cheese platter are, Peter explains that there
is much debate on the subject as there is so
much diversity when it comes to cheese. If
building a cheese platter is unfamiliar territory,
“just keep to the ones you love and you can
make it the hero cheese on the platter. But it
must be good and well aged.”
“A really well-aged full wheel of d’Affinois

great example of this,” he says.

transformative year to date. Our radars have
been dinging almost non-stop with exciting,
enticing and innovative new developments.
From world-class hotels to tri-level social hubs;
we’re about to enter the big kid’s league.
Just in case James Street wasn’t already
one of Brisbane’s most enviable strips, the
second-half of this year will see the opening
of The Calile, a luxury hotel like the River
City has never seen, complete with an on-site

The Voice in 2013 and selling out her
nation-wide ‘Private’ tour, Vera Blue
became a shining light for young,
female Australian artists. Maybe it’s because of
her spine-tingling voice, or perhaps the way she
dances like no-one is watching when on stage
with Flume. Although both these things are
undeniably true, I have an inkling that it’s much
more than that. She’s unapologetically herself –
both on and off the stage.
With her 2017 album Perennial, Vera
explored a unique kind of vulnerability
about diving headfirst into writing her own
heartbreak along with the behind-closed-doors
moments and realisations that come afterwards.
“Vulnerability is something that’s really in itself
super powerful, yet it’s something that a lot of
people struggle to come to terms with and feel
comfortable with,” she said.
Touring with the record and performing her
tracks for live audiences has seen Vera come
into her own and embrace the unique kind of
strength that comes alongside vulnerability.
“Through writing the more recent songs like
Lady Powers, I’ve found this inner strength that
I didn’t know I had,” she said.
Building on this strength, Vera Blue has just
announced her latest project that is due out in

“I really take my hat off to girls in the industry

I’ve tried to do and it’s really hard. I’ll still give
it a go of course, but there are lots of men
that I’m surrounded by that are amazing at it
and it’s really cool to see heaps of girls doing
it too,” she said.  “There are powerful things
going on in society with women this year, and
stuff that’s happened with me as well. I think
we can all just relate to it more and more,”
she said. Almost a year on from the release of
Perennial, Vera knows that now is the right time
for Lady Powers to make waves and hopes it
will contribute to a global statement that won’t
be ignored.

In a world of fast-fashion, this local label is stepping up
and doing things differently.

A quick holiday to Indonesia was
all the inspiration that Maddison
Castens needed to launch her
now hugely-successful accessories
line. While holidaying in Bali with
her husband Matthew, the Gold
Coast girl was drawn to the unique
craftsmanship of the locals.
After posting a few holiday photos
to Instagram, one of the couple’s
friends spotted some of their
purchases and asked if they
could bring a couple of
items back for them.
Ideas were thrown
around and Surrender
the Label was born a
few weeks later.
Each of the labels
handcrafted pieces
are items that reflect
an adventurous and
relaxed lifestyle while also
enhancing the raw beauty
that surrounds us. A collection of
hand crafted items were sought
out, aiming to inspire its owner to
explore, enjoy and take hold of the
memories that create a unique and
unforgettable life experience.
But the pair weren’t content with
simply creating a product, instead
choosing to support the local
suppliers at the same time.
“We really liked the idea of a
product that was crafted by the
locals and the fact that each
sale haelped give back to the
community,” Maddison says.
“Through Surrender the Label, we
hope to share a lifestyle that we love
and enjoy, but to also help others
enjoy it along the way. We have been
incredibly blessed with Surrender
the Label and believe that we
should be blessing others through
what we do.”
What initially started as a side
project for the pair has grown to be
positive influence throughout the
world. And while their journey is
only just getting started, it’s clear
that we’ll be seeing big things from
this local label.
“We believe this world was carefully
crafted by our creator and we want
others to become more aware of the
beauty that surrounds us.
Our motivation comes from the idea
that something small and simple
can have a big impact on others and
we hope that Surrender can make a
difference through
all that we do.”

The Fine Line
Discovering where creativity meets
academia, Emma Regolini describes
how she is exploring a new frontier of art.

mma Regolini has a unique approach
to her art. Derived from her academic
pursuits and developed as a way to
gather data on online behaviours, her
story doesn’t follow the traditional roadmap
many artists adopt.
Interested in the way her studies could
transect with art, Emma created her Instagram
account @theline_ as a way to share her work
while undertaking her Bachelor of Commerce.
“I originally started @theline_ project as a
means to gather data on the topic of millennial
online behaviours. During my studies, I
thought why not experiment merging my
academic work with a creative execution and
see where they intersect.”
Prompted by developments in her academic
studies, Emma came up with the foundation of

Wines to watch
These are the up-and-coming Australian tipples
you need in your wine rack, writes Sarah Tayler.
A
ustralian winemaking is going from
strength to strength. Each year
brings with it more international
recognition, more awards, and
more importantly, fabulous homegrown wines.
Not traditionally known for its wine-growing,
Queensland is moving up in the wine world
thanks to the hard work and innovation of
local winemakers. We caught up with one of
the Sunshine State’s vino VIPs to see what’s
next for Queensland wine.
The Granite Belt is currently ranked
number five in Australian wine regions, but
they will be top of the list if Mike Hayes of
Symphony Hill has anything to do with it. In
2017, Mike was named Australian Winemaker
of the Year, the first Queenslander to be given
this accolade.
“I have been involved in the wine industry
in one way or another for nearly forty years,”
Mike told Style.

“I love being a winemaker because you are
looking at the whole process. Everyone talks a
lot about winemakers, but the real hero is the
vineyard. That is the real winemaker.”
Just three hours from Brisbane, the Granite
Belt is known for being an experimental
and open-minded region; trialling emerging
grape varieties and making small batches of
intricately grown wines.
“We steer away from the heavy alcohol
levels of the jammy shiraz and the overly oaky
chardonnays, instead experimenting with new
and exciting varieties from Portugal, Russia and
Georgia to name but a few.”
The Granite Belt has an almost unique
setting due to the altitude (600 – 1,000 metres)
and soil composition. Made up of decomposed
granite, volcanic rock and slate, the acidic soil
allows the winemakers to produce wine with
natural longevity.
“The Granite Belt produces elegant,

balanced and delicate wines. Unlike other
places in Queensland, we get four distinct
seasons up here, which is a big part of it.”
The region’s standout feature, Mike says,
will be its resilience to climate change. Over
the next century, coastal wine regions are due
to see increasingly unstable weather and a rise
in temperatures that won’t affect the Granite
Belt quite as heavily.

At Mount Alvernia College, they realise that not everyone’s tastes are the same.
In today’s world, many women embrace the
wearing of pants on a regular basis. As Mount
Alvernia College is an inclusive educational
community, it seemed timely to include pants
so as not to continue the stereotype of women
only wearing dresses.
“Initially I discussed the idea with one
of the senior classes and mentioned the
option at a Parents and Friends Executive
Meeting. Both groups were supportive of
looking at the option and so a committee
was formed consisting of parents, current
and past students, current staff, and past staff
members,” Principal Kerrie Tuite says.
“Young women at Mount Alvernia have
always worn a dress or shirt and skirt for
formal wear, with shorts and tracksuits for
sporting activities. In 2010, the current dress
and blazer option was developed, using similar
committee structure. At this time, the College

was undergoing a rebranding and the new
uniform was part of this.”
In deciding on the pants and shirt formal
uniform option, the committee took into
account style, material, comfort, and whether
the pants and shirt matched with other
uniform items such as hat and blazer. There
was also discussion on whether the current
shoes would look appropriate with the pants.
Once the uniform was decided, a
mannequin, wearing the pants and shirt
with blazer and hat, was placed in a window
and students were encouraged to look and
comment. This process took several meetings
and spanned twelve months, so it was not a
rushed process. The pants and shirt option
will be available from the start of Term Two
following the Easter break.

Most of my patients ask what is the best
procedure or treatment to address skin
ageing. My answer always varies, as it
depends on many factors including the
patient’s age, their current skin condition,
and their expectations. Plus, factors such as

I refer to skin texture as the palate of the
skin. Skin texture can be simply defined as
white, red or brown. Uneven texture often
means uneven skin colouration. Skin texture
can be improved by various procedures,

Myth busting:
venous ulcers
As you can imagine having an open sore
on your leg that is prone to weeping
and bleeding can be a very painful and
distressing condition to suffer from. It’s
probably something you associate with older
people. However, it’s not uncommon for
us to see patients presenting with ulcers in
their late 20s and early 30s.
Venous ulcers are a complication of
untreated varicose veins. Varicose veins can
be visible or hidden below the skin but many
patients suffer from tell-tale itchy, restless
legs or ‘burning’ feet. The failing veins pool
blood leading to chronic inflammation of
the skin and surrounding tissue, eventually
breaking down and resulting in an ulcer.
The good news is venous ulcers are
completely treatable by a phlebologist. Once
wound is correctly dressed, improvements
can be seen in a few weeks and in most cases

Throughout the day the mouth moves in and
out of an acidic environment because of the
different foods that we eat. Some foods are
more acidic than others, with soft drinks,
fruit juice and sports drinks being major
culprits. Water, fortunately, is neutral.
Most often we think about the acid we
put in our mouth but there is also acid
that comes from within the body such as
vomiting and gastric reflux. Some people are
not aware they have gastric reflux because
it may only occur at night when they are
asleep. This form of gastric reflux is highly
associated with obstructive sleep apnoea. A
collapsing airway can lead to the stomach
contents being drawn into the mouth where
it pools and dissolves the back teeth. This
can lead to the need for extensive dental
intervention and put your life at risk due to
