Introduccion

Research in plasmonics is currently taking place at a breathtaking

pace, and we can expect that many more will join the game in the near
future. But for the newcomer, where to start?
i’ll start with tell them that are plasmons, then mention some physical
properties and finally will say that types application has.

photon and phonon

in the same way that a photon or a phonon are quantizations of

electromagnetic and mechanical waves.
The plasmon is the quasiparticle result of the quantization of the
oscillations of the plasma.

Fermi gas

Therefore, plasmons are oscillations of the density of the Fermi gas

(free electron gas).

Snell’s law

Snell’s law is a formula used to calculate the refractive angle of light

when crossing the separation surface between two means of light
propagation.

Total internal reflection

The total internal reflection is the phenomenon that occurs when a ray
of light crosses a means of refractive index n2 smaller than the index of
refraction n1 in which it is found, is refracted in such a way that it is
not able to pass through the surface between both media completely.

Diego Alejandro Criollo (Physics Seminar) Plasmons District University 11 / 17

The measure of reflection is reflectance; it is defined as the
relationship between the reflected luminous flux and the incident
luminous flux.
Measurement of transmission is transmittance; is the ratio
between the transmitted light flow and the incident luminous flux.

electric and magnetic fields of light

the light carries with it variations of electric and magnetic fields with
respect to the time so it is very useful to make a study of these fields in
each of the means where it is propagated.

purposes

When we study this and take into account the transverse magnetic
equations we can see that it has two purposes

the first is that the part of the vertical electric field is used for the gold
to be polarized, this means that there are surface charges on the top
face and the bottom face.

purposes

the second is that the part of the horizontal electric field is used to
couple with the wave vector of the propagating plasmon.

thelps explain a diffraction network, useful in Raman spectroscopy and
also in biochemistry for the study of mechanisms and the kinetics of
bound bonds and receptors (between substrate and enzyme)
