The French Revolution occurred from 1789 to 1799, beginning with the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. Over 40,000 people including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette were brutally murdered. However, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen was adopted in August 1789, abolishing feudalism. The first estate, consisted of the clergy and made up of 2% of the population. Most of the first estate were rich, such as the bishops and abbots who owned most of the country’s land; however, the parish priests lived just like peasants (Hetherton). The second estate consisted of the nobles and occupied 1% of the population.
