1.0 GENERAL
This report specifies permissible cross-sections of power cables for serving the MV and LV systems under
short-circuit conditions and normal operating conditions for 2 x 660 MW Obra-C Thermal Power
Extension Project.
The calculations in this report are performed in accordance with IS and other standards as mentioned in
ITB. For dimensioning of power cables the following conditions shall be considered:
- Short-circuit conditions
- Current carrying capacity under normal conditions
- Voltage Drop during normal operation and motor start-up
- The stating current for motor feeders shall be 6 times the full load current for AC motors and 2
times the full load current for DC motors
The longest duration of short-circuit fault for incoming and tie feeder cables is estimated to 1 second for
50kA and for outgoing feeder cables such as motors and transformers, 0.2 seconds which shall be verified
by short circuit calculation and protection relay setting study.
𝐼𝑋 𝑡
A = (Equation 3.1)
𝑘
Where,
t = duration in seconds
k = factor
𝑄𝑐 (𝐵+20) 𝜃𝑟 − 𝜃𝑖
𝑘= ln( 1 + ) (Equation 3.2)
𝑄20 𝐵+ 𝜃𝑖
Therefore minimum cross-sections shall be 630 mm2 for incoming and tie feeder cables and 240 mm2 for
outgoing feeder cables of 11kV switchgears.
The longest duration of short-circuit fault for incoming and tie feeder cables is estimated to 1 second for
40kA and for outgoing feeder cables such as motors and transformers, 0.2 seconds which shall be verified
by short circuit calculation and protection relay setting study.
Therefore minimum cross-sections shall be 630 mm2 for incoming and tie feeder cables and 240 mm2 for
outgoing feeder cables of 3.3kV switchgears.
The longest duration of short-circuit fault for incoming and tie feeder cables is estimated to 1 second for
50kA and for outgoing feeder cables such as motors and transformers, 0.25 seconds which shall be
verified by short circuit calculation and protection relay setting study.
Therefore minimum cross-sections shall be 630 mm2 for incoming and tie feeder cables and 300 mm2 for
outgoing feeder cables of 415V switchgears.
The cable size will be selected based on the current carrying capacity of cable.
N = I1/I2
Where,
(Derated current carrying capacity of cable X No. of runs > Load current)
5.1 Formula
Vd = k x (R cos θ + X sin θ) x Ir x L
= k x Z x Ir x L (Equation 5.1)
Where,
k : Constant
(Value equal to 2 for single phase and 1.732 for three phases)
For DC loads:
Vd = 2 x Ir x R x L (Equation 5.2)
Where,
The maximum permissible voltage drops for 11kV and 3.3kV system shall be considered for normal
operation as well as for start-up of 11kV motors and 3.3kV motors. Voltage drops for normal and starting
mode of 11kV motors will be limited to 3% and 15% respectively.
The maximum voltage drop under normal conditions shall not exceed 3%, and the total voltage drop up
to motor terminals at full voltage, during the motor starting period shall not exceed 15%.
The voltage drop limits for feeders other than motors shall be as mentioned below:
