Design of Concrete Structures – I

Time: 1: 30 hours Maximum Marks : 24

Instructions to Candidates

1) Section A is compulsory
2) Attempt any two questions from Section – B
3) Attempt any three questions from Section – C
4) Relevant Indian Code of Practices are permitted in examination and assume any
suitable data if missing.

Section – A 3×2=6

1) What is singly reinforced beam?

2) How the ultimate limiting strain in steel can be calculated?
3) Which sections are preferred in earthquake prone areas and why?

Section – B 2×3=6

1) What are the basic rules for the design of reinforcement in beam?
2) How the section can be determined if it is under reinforced or over reinforced or
balanced section?
3) Draw the stress strain curve for the plain concrete and cold worked deformed steel
bar.

Section – C 3 × 4 = 12

1) Give the assumptions for the analysis and design of reinforced concrete for flexure.
2) A singly reinforced beam of concrete grade M-25 has to retain an ultimate moment of
90 Kn-m. Design the section using 0.9% steel of grade Fe 415. Assume the width of
the beam equal to 250mm.
3) A R.C. beam of rectangular section 400mm wide and 600mm deep is reinforced with
the 5 bars of 12mm diameter provided with an effective cover of 31mm. Calculate the
ultimate moment of resistance of the section.
4) Describe with the help of line diagram :
a. Effective cover
b. Overall depth
c. Clear cover
d. Neutral axis
e. Depth of neutral axis
