Design Of Concrete Structures II

Time: 1: 30 hours Maximum Marks: 24

Instructions to Candidates

1) Section A is compulsory
2) Attempt any two questions from Section – B
3) Attempt any three questions from Section – C
4) Assume suitable data if not given.
5) Relevant Indian codes of Practices are permitted in the examination.

Section – A 3×2=6

1) Define:
a. Axial load
b. Eccentric load
2) How the short column and slender column can be differentiated?
3) Give the expression for calculating minimum eccentricity according to code. Write
down the condition for, when the column to be designed is designed as short column
axially loaded.

Section – B 2×3=6

1) What are different causes of failure for different types of columns?

2) A 400mm square short column is reinforced with 4 No. - 25mm diameter bars.
Determine the safe axial load it can carry.
3) Differentiate between Hoop and Helical reinforcement. Also describe the general
rules according to code for the detailing of helical reinforcement.

Section – C 3 × 4 = 12

1) Give the detailing of longitudinal and transverse reinforcement in columns.

2) Design a circular column to carry an axial load of 2000kN using helical
reinforcement. Use M-25 mix and Fe 415 grade steel.
3) Write down the general procedure for the design of slender column.
4) Design a column for the following data:
a. Column size = 400 × 400mm
b. Pu = 1500 kN
c. Mux = 150 kN
d. Muy = 120 kN
Use M-20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.
