• City & Guilds and The IET are working together for the e-learning courses to help training providers,
employers and FE Colleges deliver the 18th Edition.
• City & Guilds is working with the IET to demonstrate our joint commitment to skills in the electrotechnical
sector and make sure that electrical professionals are trained to the highest industry standards and
compliant with the new wiring regulations, due to launch on 2 July.

• July/August – publication of all associated IET guidance notes 1-8, IET Electricians guide to the Building
Regulations and Code of Practice for the Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment.
• July 2018 to 31 December 2018 – both 17th Edition (Amendment 3) and 18th Edition are classed as current
publications.

There are many subtle or editorial changes throughout the publication including:
• changes to many definitions
• removal of wording such as ‘ensure’.

Chapter 41:
• changes to the rating of circuits covered by table 41.1: disconnection times
• changes to the ratings of socket-outlets requiring additional protection.

Chapter 44:
• many changes in section 443: transient overvoltages due to lightning strikes
• introducing a calculated risk level approach
• section 444: changes to separation distance guidance to reduce effects of EMI.

Chapter 51:
• RCD test notice: quarterly test frequency changed to ‘six monthly’.
Chapter 52:
• adequate support to stop the premature collapse of wiring systems
• now applies to ‘all’ systems
• not just escape routes.
Chapter 53:
• Maximum value RA information for RCD ratings now extended to 20 A (20 000 mA)
• many changes and additions relating to SPDs used for lightning strikes.

Chapter 54:
• Foundation Earthing now recognised although major requirements for this put off to Amendment 1.
Chapter 55:
Very little change except for –
• section 559.10 now includes requirements for ground recessed luminaires (in decking)

Part 6:
• continuity of ring-final circuits now falls under the umbrella of continuity in general
• in certain circumstances where damage could occur, testing live (LN) to earth only is permitted during an
initial verification
• requirement for a polarity test of the supply before an installation is energised.

Appendix 6:
• subtle changes to schedule of test results. These include:
• test voltages must now be declared
• AFDD added to circuit details
• Max Zs now added
• RCD data in circuit details.

• All evolve tests that contain items related to BS 7671 will contain neutral items that can be answered with
either 17th Edition or 18th Edition with the exception of:
• 2357-006 will have an alternative 008 based on 18th Edition from July 2018
• 2357-006 will continue until July 2019.
• 5357-016 will have an alternative 018 based on the 18th Edition from July 2018
• 5357-016 will continue until July 2019.

• Centre marked assignments will contain dual marking schemes on questions impacted by the 18th Edition,
where centres should mark based on the version used by the candidate.
• These dual mark schemes will remain effective until the end of the 2018/19 academic year.

• Q – state the disconnection time for a 230 V 45 A socket-outlet installed in a TN installation.
• A – (17th) - 5 seconds
• A – (18th) - 0.4 seconds

• As these assessments are specifically end assessments, 2018 assessments are to the 17th Edition.
• 2019 assessments will be set to the 18th Edition.
