Bahrain awards $51m water

The Bahrain Electricity and Water Authority

(EWA) has awarded a contract worth
BD19.3 million ($51.2 million) to Ahmed
Mansoor Al A'ali for the construction of
strategic water distribution stations.

The scope of work under the contract

includes construction of a new water distribution station at Al Madina Al Shamaliya (NBNT DS) having a
storage capacity of 15m gallons and capability of distributing 10 million gallons per day, reported the Gulf
Daily News, our sister publication.

Another new water distribution station is proposed to be constructed in the Seef District with capability of
distributing 5 million gallons per day to consumers in the area.

In addition, the contract also includes the provision of additional pumping facilities at the existing water
stations in Salmabad and Buquwah and modification works at the existing Seef blending station, said the
GDN report.

The essential works required to make the station at Al Madina Al Shamaliya operational are planned to be
completed in the first quarter of next year while all the other works are expected to be completed by the end
of that year.

This will enable better transmission of water to northern parts of Bahrain and also strengthen the water
network and provide the flexibility required in the network so as to supply these areas from different View all events

This contract forms a part of the second phase of works for the Water Transmission Development Project
2009-2012, which is funded by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, stated the report.

The project is considered the largest of the water transmission projects in the kingdom in terms of size,
geographical extent and cost.

It includes construction of new pipelines and new water stations and establishment of nine new pumping and
distribution stations, expanding and upgrading 12 existing water stations, and increasing the overall storage
capacity to 215m gallons, which is an increase of about 70 per cent over the existing storage capacity.

Ground and elevated storage tanks are being established and some 125km of water transmission pipelines
are being installed from Al Dur Power and Water Station in the Southern Province to the Central province,
Seef District in the Capital Province and North Town in the Northern Province, which is an increase of about

45 per cent over the current network length, reported the GDN.

The project also includes reinforcement works pursuant to the Hidd Phase 3 Project which involves
replacement of some old water transmission pipelines in Capital and Central Provinces.

Electricity and Water Authority chief executive Shaikh Nawaf bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who presided over the
signing, said the contract comes within a master plan that the authority has put in place to develop and
expand the electricity and water transmission networks to meet the increasing demand from domestic,
commercial and industrial sectors.

"This project aims to improve the water security situation in the kingdom, while also providing flexibility in the
various provinces, by connecting several water stations with more than one water producing sources in the
kingdom," he stated.

"This will ensure an equitable distribution of the potable water in terms of both the quantity and quality," he
added.

The contract signing was also attended by a number of EWA senior officials as well as company
representatives along with the representatives of Mott Mac Donald - the consulting company supervising the
