ladders to practice the Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect,
Lesson link and used to.
Use after Unit 3, SB p. 20 • Put students into groups of three or more and give each group

Answers for each referee
• When a student lands on a square, he or she should make a full
Each group of students will need a die sentence from the prompts with the correct past forms of the
and counters. verbs. The referee uses the Answer sheet to decide if the answer is
correct. If the answer is correct, the player can roll the die again.
If the answer is not correct, the player’s turn ends. (The referee
should not say the correct answer in case another player lands on
the square.)
• When players land on a square with a ladder, they move to the
top of the ladder only if they answer the question at the bottom
correctly. When players land on a snake’s head, they move to
the bottom of the snake and wait until their next turn before
rolling again.

Extension (15 minutes)

• Ask students to work in pairs and choose one of the sentences in
the task as the start to a short story/anecdote. Students write notes
for the key events in the story.
• Students work with a new partner and tell each other their
story/anecdote.
