FADE IN:
BRANDON
(groggy)
Come on guys, it’s late.
Brandon walks into the hallway, still a bit groggy. The music
loud, but he doesn’t hear his friends.
BRANDON
(shouting)
Hey! Can y’all cut that shit down?
It’s like two-o-frack in the
morning!
BRANDON (CONT’D)
Yo!
BRANDON (CONT’D)
This is bullshit. Guys!
BRANDON (CONT’D)
(semi-shocked)
T-This is a joke... Stop playing,
guys!
BRANDON
(mumbles)
Chris...
(looks over at the other
body)
Dabbs.
BRANDON (CONT’D)
M-Mike! Mike! Where are you?
INT. CLOSET
The DOOR KNOB starts to turn. The humming gets LOUDER as the
door SHAKES and RATTLES. Brandon holds on for dear life.
Then, it stops.
OLIVIA
Brandon!
OLIVIA
Brandon! Where are you? Brandon!
KARL
Livie!
BLACKOUT
NANA
Look at you! You look so good! So
handsome, just like your Daddy.
Nana and Mary are in the front seat and Brandon’s in the
back.
NANA
(exhilarated)
Your boxes got in just fine, and
don’t worry about a job. You can
work at our diner. You can start
tomorrow if you like.
MARY
Or in a couple of days, whatever
works for you, Brandon.
6.
NANA
(smiling)
Or in a couple of days.
Mary nods.
MARY
You may need some time to get used
to the country. It’s a far cry from
that noisy Chicago.
NANA
Mary, he’s been here before?
BRANDON
I was eight then, Nana.
NANA
Well, that wasn’t too long ago.
SAM
Are you sure you saw it, Eric?
ERIC
Shut up, you dipstick! I saw the
white doe!
MARK
Look who’s shoutin’ now.
ERIC
My Granny used to say a white doe
is special-- magical.
ERIC (CONT’D)
Fuck the both of you. When we---
7.
Sam is startled and Mark reaches for his rifle. But Eric is
ready.
He grins, quickly grabs his rifle and takes off, leaving the
others behind.
SAM
Hey, wait!
The doe glides through the bushes like it’s the wind.
However, Eric is keeping up.
He sees the doe through the bushes, looking away from Eric.
ERIC
(whispers)
I got you now. I got ya.
JACKSON (V.O.)
Put the gun down.
JACKSON (V.O.)
Leave and take the others with you.
Jackson jumps down from the tree and walks over to the doe.
JACKSON
(strong Southern accent)
Look at you, huh? Causin’ trouble.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
You need stay away from here for
awhile.
The doe nuzzles its head on Jackson’s cheek and runs off.
BRANDON
It’s exactly how I remembered it,
Nana.
NANA
Just a few minor changes, but yes,
it’s the same old house.
9.
NANA
Your room’s upstairs, Brandon. It
was your Daddy’s room.
The room has bare walls, there is a fully made queen bed, a
dresser, night stand, a sofa chair and chest next to the bed.
There are several BOXES in the corner of the room. The boxes
are marked with FRAGILE and EXPRESS MAIL.
NANA
Now Brandon, I know you’ve been
through a lot over the past year.
Your mama and I hope being here
will do you some good.
Mary nods.
MARY
(directly)
We don’t think you’re crazy,
Brandon.
Nana sighs.
NANA
No, we don’t. You just need time
heal and move forward.
(Nana grabs Brandon’s
hands)
And we’ll help you any and every
way we can.
BRANDON
Thank you, Nana... Aunt Mary.
Brandon looks around the room and grabs his messenger bag.
BEGIN MONTAGE:
Brandon in shock.
BRANDON (V.O.)
I can’t remember much. All I have
are these nightmares and broken
memories. I honestly don’t know
what’s real and what’s not.
BRANDON (V.O.)
They thought I was going crazy,
seeing things, hearing voices. Mama
didn’t know to do anymore. Luckily,
Nana stepped in before things got
worse.
Brandon puts his FURRY MONSTER doll on the middle of his bed.
BRANDON (V.O.)
She believes I will get better
here.
BRANDON (V.O.)
I pray she’s right, because I don’t
have any other options. Either get
it together or bust. I’m hoping for
getting it together.
END MONTAGE:
BRANDON
Nana, I have to say that dinner was
lit.
NANA
Lit... Well, thank you, baby. I’m
glad you liked it. How’s your room?
BRANDON
Nice and cozy. I’ll probably put
some posters up soon, you know,
make it more my own.
NANA
Good. Dress it up anyway you
please.... Oh, before I forget, can
you take the scraps out to the
compost shed?
BRANDON
Sure, where’s the shed?
BRANDON
I should’ve known this shed would
be located in some haunted forest
shit.
BRANDON
(laughs at himself)
Shit.
It’s Jackson. He swings his dark hair out of his face and
swims towards Brandon.
JACKSON
(pointing at shorts)
Could you hand me my shorts over
there?
BRANDON
Um, sure.
JACKSON
(casually)
I’m Jackson and you’re...
BRANDON
(shaking his hand)
Brandon... I’m not from around
here.
JACKSON
I can tell, you have an city accent
and I ain’t never seen you around.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
(smiles back)
What?
BRANDON
Nothing, it’s just... I guess, I’m
really in the South now.
JACKSON
Where you from?
BRANDON
(sounding so awkward)
Chicago. I just moved here earlier
today.
JACKSON
So, where do you live now, Brandon
from Chicago?
BRANDON
(points to his left)
With my Grandmother and Aunt over
there.
Jackson nods.
JACKSON
Oh, with Miss Beverly? She’s real
nice.
(beat)
I live up around there...
(points forward)
In the far side of the woods.
BRANDON
Whoa, that deep in the woods?
That’s way creepy, dude.
JACKSON
No it ain’t. It’s beautiful out
here.
BRANDON
Beautiful? Okay... You don’t worry
about something attacking you?
JACKSON
(laughs)
Not really, maybe raccoons.
BRANDON
Raccoons... Good to know.
(beat)
I should get back.
JACKSON
I’ll join you.
BRANDON
It was nice meeting you, Jackson.
JACKSON
Nice to meet you too. I’ll probably
see you around.
NANA
I assumed you found the shed.
BRANDON
Um, yeah... Nana, do you know a guy
named Jackson?
NANA
Oh, Jackson Garrett, Kenneth’s son.
He’s very nice, always polite to me
when I see him.
BRANDON
He seems cool.
NANA
Well, you should get to know him.
I’m sure he can show you some fun
things to do in town.
BRANDON
We’ll see, Nana.
MARY
What are you doin’ here, you didn’t
have to come in today.
BRANDON
I wanted check everything out. You
know, see the sites and the frills.
BLESSING
Well, you ain’t got much to see.
Marion’s about the size of two
county fairs.
MARY
(laughs)
Blessing, meet my nephew, Brandon.
He’s going to be livin’ with me and
mama now.
BLESSING
Are you hungry?
BLESSING (CONT’D)
Sit down, Brandon. You’re about to
get a bomb ass breakfast.
MARY
Abby, you’re--
ABBY
I know, Mary. I know. I had to get
Mama to drop me off.
Abby briskly walks in the back room and comes back with an
apron.
ABBY (CONT’D)
I just broke up with Aaron.
18.
BLESSING
Ah, so you left the boyfriend of
the year?
ABBY
Mama helped me put his stuff out
this morning. That’s why I’m late,
Mary.
MARY
Well, lucky for you it was a small
crowd. Blessing and Rob, handled
it.
ABBY
Thanks for covering for me.
MARY
(stern)
Just don’t make this a habit, girl.
I depend on all of y’all to keep
this place running.
BLESSING
I can’t believe you finally broke
up with him. But if Aaron starts
clownin’, let me know. Squeaky and
I--
MARY
Okay, not here.
(sternly)
Abby, get everything ready for the
lunch run.
Abby nods and heads towards the back room. Mary shakes her
head and looks at Blessing.
BRANDON
So, I see the diner is a poppin’.
BLESSING
Poppin’ like pills, especially with
that crazy girl, Abby.
19.
ABBY
What?
BLESSING
Nothing, girl... this is Mary’s
nephew, Brandon.
ABBY
Hey Brandon, Mary said you were
coming here... Welcome.
BRANDON
Thanks.
BLESSING
Abby’s my partner in crime. But
she’s more trouble than a partner.
ABBY
Whatever, I’m still a growing girl.
(smiles at Brandon)
Gotta make mistakes in order to
learn from them, right?
BLESSING
Oh, Lord.
Walking around the city square, Brandon sees a sign for IRV’S
COMICS.
JACKSON
You like comics?
BRANDON
(gasps)
Holy Shit!
JACKSON
No, my name is Jackson, remember?
JACKSON (CONT’D)
I wasn’t trying to scare you. I
just wanted to say hi... Hi.
BRANDON
(grins)
Hi, Creepy McCreeperson.
JACKSON
(looking through the
comics)
I see... heroes, cyborgs... You
must really fantasy stories.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
So, what brings you out from the
scary woods?
21.
Brandon shrugs.
BRANDON
Exploring.
JACKSON
Well, you can’t do that without a
guide.
BRANDON
Oh really?
JACKSON
Really. Let me show you around
South Carolina’s finest town.
Brandon laughs.
BRANDON
So, what’s life like in Marion?
JACKSON
Quiet.
BRANDON
That’s all you have to say about
your hometown?
JACKSON
Not my hometown, it’s my Dad’s. We
moved here from Orlando a few years
ago. He met my mom here.
BRANDON
Cool.
JACKSON
What do you think about Marion so
far?
BRANDON
So far, it’s nice... Creepy at
night, but it’s cool.
JACKSON
(laughs)
I think you’ll like it here.
22.
JACKSON (CONT'D)
Town’s full of good people and
nothing crazy really happens.
AARON THOMAS, 25, White, burly, sticks his head out the
window. Inside the truck is his buddies.
AARON
Hey faggot! Hey, you hear me!
BRANDON
(angry)
You got a problem, inbreed?
JACKSON
Forget it, Brandon. He ain’t worth
it.
BRANDON
What an asshole! He doesn’t even
know me and--
JACKSON
He was actually talking to me.
BRANDON
To you?
Jackson nods.
BRANDON (CONT’D)
What’s up with you and him?
JACKSON
(laughs)
Aaron? We crossed paths in the
past. He’s always doin’ something
stupid.
23.
BRANDON
Judging by the redness of his neck,
you should watch your back.
JACKSON
(teasing)
Aw, you lookin’ out for me?
BRANDON
(slightly blushing)
I’m just saying a guy like that
looks like trouble. You should
watch your back.
JACKSON
I ain’t worried. I’ve handled
worse.
BRANDON
Oh, okay.
JACKSON
The stories I could tell you.
Just then, a loud DING, DONG rings across town. The TOWN HALL
TOWER BELL goes off.
BRANDON
Shit! I told Nana I would meet her
for lunch! I hate to cut and run--
JACKSON
No worries. I know how to find you.
BRANDON
Well, see you later.
JACKSON
Soon.
Brandon smiles and turns away; Jackson watches him walk off.
24.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Day two in Marion and all you can
hear is crickets and frogs
screwing. This town is such a
cliché, like, in the Heat of the
Night cliche. It’s going to take
some time to get used to this.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Okay, I need to chill. It’s not
that bad. Especially with this
Jackson guy. He’s like a real life
Tom Sawyer, charming, funny...
Cute. Actually, HOT! His body is
sickening... I shouldn’t be
crushing on him. I don’t even know
if he’s gay. However, he has been a
great distraction from...
BRANDON (V.O.)
I shouldn’t say it like that. I
can’t dismiss what happened.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Sometimes, I wonder why was I
spared? How did I survived?
Brandon looks out the window, watching the TREES sway eerily
in a circular motion.
25.
MARTIN
Enter, please!
The door OPENS and PATRICK, White, 20, lean and apprehensive
walks in.
MARTIN (CONT’D)
Don’t be scared of me, boy. I don’t
bite.
PATRICK
(nervously)
You’re a seer, right?
MARTIN
You can call me that, or psychic.
(points down)
Sit down.
PATRICK
I thought... I didn’t mean to
offend you if I did, I--
MARTIN
Easy now, boy. This is a painless
thing. Just relax and let me help
you.
MARTIN (CONT’D)
You’re searching for someone...
(beat)
He, yes... He has caused you pain,
loss... But you love him.
PATRICK
Yes sir, he’s like a brother.
Then, Martin opens his eyes and moves his hands away from
Patrick’s hands.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
(anxious)
What did you see?
MARTIN
You won’t find him.
(beat)
He don’t want to be found.
PATRICK
I will find him. He’s very
important to me.
Martin moves his hands under the table, keeping his eyes on
Patrick.
MARTIN
Your light is all wrong. Violent,
madness... What did you do?
PATRICK
So many things, Martin. So many
things.
MARTIN
I should’ve sensed you earlier.
(points the gun at
Patrick)
You’re not... Not normal.
PATRICK
You’re right! I’m something else.
MARTIN
(sweating)
I’ll use this, I-I’m warning you!
Then...
PATRICK (V.O.)
Sit
PATRICK
Martin, Martin, Martin. Your
psychic abilities are strong, but
not strong enough.
MARTIN
(straining voice)
You’re broken... You reek of
darkness.
PATRICK
(mockingly)
Yeah, yeah I’m fucked up. All I see
are nightmares and horrors.
MARTIN
What do you want from me?
PATRICK
(infuriated)
I want to find Jackson, rot sack! I
want him to come home, and see what
I’ve done for us.
28.
PATRICK (CONT'D)
That’s what I want!
(then smiling)
But from you, Martin. What I want
from you...
Then, Patrick places his hand; his darken, thin and CLAWED
hand on Martin’s face. Martin’s eyes widen in fear.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Your eyes.
29.
MARY
I hope I didn’t give you a mess to
deal with. I figure since you’re
good with numbers, you could double
check my books.
BRANDON
It’s no problem, but they make
computer programs for stuff like
this, y’know.
MARY
I only use computers for the news,
bloggin’, and datin’.
BRANDON
(grins)
Aunt Mary...
MARY
And why would I get a computer
program, when my nephew can do the
work, right?
BRANDON
Right.
MARY
Okay, I got errands to run before
five. Mama and I’ll be in Clover
City for Bingo. We’ll be back late
tonight. If you need me, call me.
BRANDON
I will, but I think I got it.
MARY
Good, but again, call me if y’all
need something.
One of the workers turns the OPEN sign over to CLOSE and
locks the door.
BLESSING
Boy, I’m done, done like a burnt
turkey.
BRANDON
Yeah, it was a long day.
BLESSING
I hope the burger’s good.
BRANDON
It is. I see why this place stays
busy.
BLESSING
Thanks, babe. So, what do you think
of Marion?
BRANDON
It’s growing on me, but y’all need
strong WiFi though. I can’t
download anything illegal down
here.
BLESSING
I feel you. I came from Memphis.
My cousin, Squeaky, told me I had
to live here ‘cuz it’s quiet and no
drama.
BLESSING (CONT’D)
It’s a good place to come to get
your life right.
BRANDON
I hope so, Blessing.
31.
BLESSING
Really? And what are you trying to
get right in your life, boo?
BRANDON
Everything.
BLESSING
Well, if that’s the case, you might
wanna think twice about hanging
around Jackson Garrett.
BRANDON
What?
BLESSING
The streets are talkin’. Saying you
two are getting it in. What’s goin’
on there?
BRANDON
Nothing, I mean... He’s just a guy.
BLESSING
Hey, we’re family up in here. You
can tell me.
BRANDON
Oh... Well, he’s cute, hot
actually. But, I don’t really know
him. Is he cool?
BLESSING
He’s weird.
BLESSING (CONT’D)
Shit! It’s Aaron. Abby!
Aaron gets out of the truck and walks towards the door.
ABBY
Fuck!
32.
AARON
Abby! Abby! Why you acting like
this, bitch!
ABBY
Get out of here!
AARON
Abby! Where am I gonna live? You
better let me back in!
AARON (CONT’D)
Stop fucking with me!
BLESSING
I’m calling the police.
BRANDON
(through the glass)
What’s your problem?
AARON
Get out of my face! I can give two
shits about you! Abby!
BRANDON
She doesn’t want your redneck ass,
you dick!
AARON
Stay out this, fucker! If I see you
outside I’ll--
33.
JACKSON
Go home, Aaron.
AARON
I was hoping to see your candy ass
soon. I guess this is my lucky
night.
JACKSON
You don’t want to do this.
AARON
(grinning)
Dead wrong, faggot!
With lighting speed, Jackson grabs his arm and THROWS Aaron
into the front of his truck.
JACKSON (V.O.)
I’m asking you to stop now!
AARON
What d-did you say? You didn’t say--
Brandon joins Jackson as the two OFFICERS get out of the car.
OFFICER 1
Blessing, what’s going on?
BLESSING
Aaron.
OFFICER 1
Figures. Get up!
AARON
Fuck you!
OFFICER 1
Cuff him!
BRANDON
It’s a good thing you were around.
No telling what Aaron would’ve
done.
JACKSON
Yeah, he’s such a stupid son of a
bitch.
BRANDON
(nodding)
And poor Abby. I wonder if she knew
he was such a dick?
JACKSON
Do you really know anyone?
BRANDON
True...
(beat)
35.
BRANDON (CONT'D)
Aaron kept calling you a faggot. He
keeps saying that to you.
JACKSON
Does it bother you?
BRANDON
Does it bother you?
JACKSON
(pause)
I don’t like it. It can be hurtful
sometimes.
BRANDON
It can be... Look Jackson, if
you’re going to be a friend. You
need to know that I’m gay. I know
folks down here can be all--
JACKSON
I know, Brandon.
(smiles)
If it helps, I’ll let you in on a
little secret.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
I like guys, too.
BRANDON
How did you? I mean, it doesn’t
matter, I... Did my Aunt talk to
you too?
JACKSON
(laughs)
No, no. I knew the first night I
met you.
BRANDON
Hey, would you like to come over?
My grandmother and aunt are out
and, well, if you don’t mind.
JACKSON
(smiles)
Sure, that’s cool.
36.
BRANDON
I was thinking about raiding Irv’s
Comics for those old Sci-fi movie
posters. I just hope Nana doesn’t
freak out or something.
JACKSON
What’s that?
BRANDON
That’s my journal. I’ve been
writing in it for a few months.
Helps me sort out my thoughts.
JACKSON
Maybe I should get one of those
journals. I got lots of stuff
trapped in my head.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
And who’s this?
BRANDON
(smiles)
That’s Fern. He’s my buddy and
therapist.
JACKSON
It’s good to have a buddy like
that.
Brandon nods.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
So, tell me about the day you came
out.
37.
BRANDON
(sighs)
You’re full of questions tonight.
JACKSON
Hey, you invited me in.
BRANDON
I did... Well, I came out in my
senior year of high school. My Mom
and friends was cool about it. Took
my Step-Dad some time to warm over
though.
JACKSON
Is your real Dad around?
BRANDON
No, he died some years ago.
JACKSON
How did you end up here?
BRANDON
(beat)
That’s another story for another
time.
JACKSON
It’s personal, right?
Brandon nods.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Cool, another time then.
BRANDON
So, it’s your turn to spill. What’s
your ethnic background?
JACKSON
Well, it’s a handful. My Dad’s
white, but my mom was a lot things.
BRANDON
Like...
JACKSON
Um... Greek, Venezuelan, some Trini
and Indian.
38.
BRANDON
Cool... Does your Dad know about
you?
JACKSON
Yep, he’s good with me, he just
doesn’t want me to do porn or
strippin’.
BRANDON
I think it’s cool your Dad is
supportive of you.
JACKSON
I think it’s cool you’re here in
Marion.
Brandon blushes.
BRANDON
Really? Why?
JACKSON
I like being around you.
BRANDON
Same here... I like you too.
BRANDON (CONT’D)
(embarrassed)
I mean, uh, I like hanging with
you, umm, fuck.
BRANDON (CONT’D)
I... I’m going to shut up now.
JACKSON
I like you too.
JACKSON
So, what you doing tomorrow?
BRANDON
I don’t know, I’ll probably hang
out at the Sock Hop.
JACKSON
Naw, you’re hangin’ with me
tomorrow.
BRANDON
Oh, I guess I’m doing that then.
JACKSON
Good, I can stop by after I’m done
working. Like around two?
BRANDON
Okay.
JACKSON
See you tomorrow, Brandon.
BRANDON
Tomorrow.
He places the eyes and the bag on the table. Also on the
table is a JAR of RED SAND.
Patrick smiles.
PATRICK
Os olhos dos seers, encontram seu
heart' desejo de s (translate in
English - eyes of seers, find my
heart's desire)
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Encontre-o! (find it)
PATRICK (CONT’D)
I know where you are, little
brother. I know where you are!
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Thank you so much Sandra Ann,
couldn’t have done this without
you.
41.
Jackson reaches in the cabinet and pulls out a BOWL and then
heads to the REFRIGERATOR.
KEN
You’re up early. What’s with the
pep?
JACKSON
It’s not early, it’s nine, and what
pep you’re talking about?
KEN
Nine is early for you.
JACKSON
Not really... I got to get over to
Brighten’s Mill.
Ken smirks.
KEN
You met someone. I can tell.
JACKSON
How?
KEN
Because, I can tell.
KEN (CONT’D)
(beat)
You have to be careful about this,
Jackson. You know that.
42.
JACKSON
I know, Dad. You don’t have to
remind me.
KEN
It’s been very quiet for the past
five years.
JACKSON
Dad, Brandon’s cool. He’s human.
KEN
Brandon, that’s his name, huh?
JACKSON
He just moved here from Chicago.
He’s Miss Beverly’s grandson.
KEN
(very fatherly)
I don’t want to be pain in the ass,
but just humor an old man here,
okay? This kid has no idea about
what you are and what you can do.
JACKSON
He doesn’t need to know. It’s not
like I run around here using my
powers.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Well, all the time.
KEN
I just need for you to be aware,
Jackson.
JACKSON
Dad, we’re safe. The spell around
here is strong; has been for years.
So, don’t worry.
KEN
I’m just keeping your head
straight.
JACKSON
Don’t freak out. He’s just a
friend, Dad. Just a friend.
43.
KEN
(not believing him)
Okay, kid. He’s just a friend.
BRANDON
How’s Abby?
BLESSING
She’s good. She used to Aaron’s
tomfoolery.
BRANDON
Blessing... The other day, you said
that Jackson’s weird. Why?
BLESSING
Well, I’m not the one to spread
rumors, but Jackson’s a creeper.
BRANDON
A creeper? How?
BLESSING
He has no friends, folks seen him
roaming the streets late at night,
and his Dad keeps him hidden in
that creepy house out in the woods.
BRANDON
I live out in the woods too. What’s
the big deal?
BLESSING
Look, he’s like a stranger. No one
really knows him. You’re the first
person I know who actually talked
to him for more than a minute.
BRANDON
He’s cool.
BLESSING
You’re sweet on him.
BRANDON
Stop, I’m---
44.
BLESSING
Sweet on him. You keep bringing him
up. Just admit it.
BRANDON
Blessing...
BLESSING
Is he gay?
BRANDON
Yeah.
BLESSING
You’re sweet on him.
ABBY
What’s up people?
BLESSING
Nothing much, how are you?
ABBY
Better... Aaron has to be a hundred
feet away from me, and he’s got
probation and road clean-up.
BRANDON
Does he follows the rules? He
doesn’t look like the one who
follows the rules.
ABBY
He knows better. Aaron don’t want
jail time, so he’ll play nice.
BLESSING
He better, or Jackson’s going to
beat that ass again!
ABBY
Y’know what? I’ve never seen
Jackson up close before. Is he
mixed?
BRANDON
He’s multi-ethnic.
45.
BLESSING
Don’t get any ideas. Brandon’s
already on it.
ABBY
Really? Go ahead, new guy.
They laugh.
BRANDON
You girls are crazy.
BLESSING
And you is crazy if you think
nobody knows what I know.
MARY
(smiling)
Brandon, you got a visitor.
BRANDON
Wow, you’re right on time.
JACKSON
We got a lot to do, Mister. You
ready?
BRANDON
Yeah, I’m ready.
JACKSON
All right then, let’s go!
46.
Brandon and Jackson are on the toy horses. They are obviously
too big for the toy horses, but they are rocking away.
BRANDON (V.O.)
It’s been awhile since I’ve had fun
like this... A long time.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Being around Jackson has been... I
don’t know. Like... like a smooth
bus ride on an open road.
BRANDON (V.O.)
I envy his cavalier attitude. He
just lives life. No worries, no
cares.
BRANDON (V.O.)
How in the hell does he manage
that? And how in the hell does he
look so good doing it?
BRANDON (V.O.)
I’m really into him. There are no
doubts about it. And I think he
feels the same. I might need to
break the ice and just say
something. I mean, I... We... keep
playing this game. One of us just
needs to come on with it.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Be real... Be honest...
BRANDON (V.O.)
Be honest... I should tell him why
I’m really here in Marion.
47.
JACKSON
So can I ask you something?
BRANDON
Sure.
JACKSON
When are you goin’ to kiss me?
BRANDON
Now seems like a great time.
Brandon and Jackson are slowly going in and then, they kiss.
BRANDON (V.O.)
I’ll tell him when the time is
right.
END OF MONTAGE
48.
BRANDON
(whispers)
Nana, I’m home.
NANA
Oh...
(yawns)
Did you and Jackson have a good
night?
BRANDON
We did, but it’s time for bed.
Brandon closes the journal and reaches for the lamp on the
night stand.
Then Brandon lies down on the pillow, facing us with his eyes
closed.
49.
Brandon opens his eyes and sits up from his bed completely
shocked.
BRANDON
No... No, no this can’t be
happening.
Brandon runs out of the room into the hallway. He’s no longer
in the cabin, he’s in Nana’s house.
BRANDON
I-I, it can’t be here! Nana! Aunt
Mary!
BRANDON (CONT’D)
Nana! Aunt Mary!
Suddenly, the room goes dark. Brandon looks around the dark
room.
BRANDON
(faintly)
No, please.
BRANDON
It can’t... It can’t, not now...
JACKSON
There you are...
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Hey, now. That’s a hug! It’s good
to see you too.
BRANDON
(beat)
We need talk, okay?
JACKSON
Is something wrong?
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Is it about us?
BRANDON
It’s about why I’m here in Marion.
JACKSON
Okay.
52.
BRANDON
Last year, during a Spring Break
trip, my friends... My friends were
murdered by something I can’t
describe or even remember.
JACKSON
Okay...
BRANDON
All I know... All I can remember
was this thing with blood all over
its mouth and shiny eyes. The cops
said I was in shock. They said some
wild animal killed them and
everyone just accepted that.
BRANDON (CONT’D)
For over a year, I had violent
dreams about that creature. I went
to every psychiatrists and then to
anyone who could help. But the
dreams kept coming and I was losing
it. Finally, Nana stepped in and
told me to come here.
BRANDON (CONT’D)
So, I dropped out of college and
moved here. Everything was cool,
until last night. I saw the
creature again. I thought I was
getting better, but now... I think,
I’m losing it, Jackson!
JACKSON
You’re not losing it, Brandon.
You’re not.
BRANDON
I know you’re trying to help me---
JACKSON
Brandon, I know you’re not.
53.
BRANDON
How-How can you tell?
JACKSON
I can... I can sense it.
BRANDON
What? What are you saying?
JACKSON
I can help you, Brandon. I can help
you figure this out, okay. I just
need you to close your eyes.
A SERIES OF SHOTS
The beast looks at Brandon. The beast looks like a man but
its face is long and dark, with long black and blonde hair.
Its mouth is filled with razor sharp teeth and the eyes are
golden.
THE BEAST
You smell sooo good. I bet you
taste like chocolate cake, but I’m
full.... Lucky for you.
FADE OUT.
55.
BRANDON
Oh my god! How did you do that? How
did you read my mind?
JACKSON
I’m not like other people, Brandon.
I’m not... I’m not completely
human.
BRANDON
Wh-what? What are you?
JACKSON
I’m a Paen.
BRANDON
(stunned)
A Paen? What does that mean? And
what was that thing?
JACKSON
It means, I’m a supernatural... And
that thing... It’s was demon or
something like that. It fogged your
mind.
BRANDON
Holy Shit! Holy--I-I always knew
there was more out there, but
nothing like this!
JACKSON
There’s so much out there, Brandon.
BRANDON
What are you, really?
JACKSON
Do you trust me?
BRANDON
For some crazy, unknown reason... I
do.
JACKSON
Hold on.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Can people see us?
JACKSON (V.O.)
Not if I want them to. My power can
keep us hidden from human eyes if I
want.
They watch the walking people and the cars driving on the
streets.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Are there others like you?
JACKSON (V.O.)
Yeah, there are twelve of us.
Twelve in every generation. We’re
like a family.
SERIES OF SHOTS
Deer run through the woods and night birds scatter as they
fly by.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Does anyone else know about you?
JACKSON (V.O.)
Just you and my Dad... He’s goin’
to be pissed about it.
BRANDON (V.O.)
You fly, read minds... What else?
JACKSON (V.O.)
Can’t show you everything so soon.
57.
BRANDON
I still can’t believe this is real.
JACKSON
It’s real, Brandon. Just like
this...
JACKSON (CONT’D)
We can talk about it some more
tomorrow.
JACKSON
He’s free... Patrick... he’s free.
KEN
Shit! How? How did he break the
spell?
JACKSON
I don’t know how, Dad. But I know
he’s free. I saw him in Brandon’s
mind.
KEN
What? How did that boy get
involved?
JACKSON
It’s a long story, but Brandon saw
him about a year ago... Patrick’s
been wandering around doin’ who
knows what all this time!
58.
KEN
You know what you have to do. You
need to find him and kill him,
Jackson.
JACKSON
Dad... Y’know I can’t do that. It
could affect me, like before. You
almost lost me, remember?
KEN
But this needs to end, son!
JACKSON
(pauses)
He’s my family, my brother...
Killing him is like killing myself.
KEN
And what about the others? They
might be out there with him.
JACKSON
Patrick’s the only one we need to
worry about. Most of them won’t
follow his lead. They’re
frightened of him.
KEN
You think he’d come to Marion?
JACKSON
No, the spell around this town is
strong. Still, it’s been over a
year, plenty of time to do
something. Fuck!
KEN
Hey, watch your language. I’m the
only cusser in this house. Now, I
need to gather some things just in
case that fucker shows up. You need
to be ready, Jackson.
JACKSON
I know... I will be.
59.
BRANDON (V.O.)
I can’t explain yesterday. I spent
all night trying to put everything
together.
BRANDON (V.O.)
My dreams were real. My friends
were killed by a fucking demon
beast.
BRANDON (V.O.)
I have so many questions, mostly
about Jackson. Where did he come
from? Where’s this demon now? Why
me?
BRANDON (V.O.)
Why was I left to live? Why did the
demon let me go? Is my connection
to Jackson fate? I mean, it’s very
odd that I meet this supernatural
bae in the middle of nowhere.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Whether I like it or not, my life
is about to get more complicated
than it already was.
60.
AARON
Fuckin’ bitch.
Then, Brandon walks out of the diner and joins Abby and the
others.
AARON (CONT’D)
Gerry.
GERRY
(wipes his mouth)
Yep.
AARON
Call the boys. Tell them to meet us
here, NOW!
AARON
Hi faggot!
AARON (CONT’D)
Get him!
PATRICK
(smiling)
Looks like you need some help.
BRANDON
(out of breath)
These guys... We have to go.
PATRICK
I see why Jackson likes you.
BRANDON
What the? What are you talking
about? We have--
BRANDON (CONT’D)
What do you want, asshole?
AARON
(grumbling)
Shut up! ‘Cuz of you, I got two
strikes.
BRANDON
That’s all on you for being a fuck-
up!
AARON
Shut the FUCK up! God, I’m goin’ to
enjoy bashin’ your head in!
PATRICK
You’re so funny, Aaron. So filled
with anger and rage... Mostly at
yourself.
63.
AARON
Who the FUCK are you, bitch?
PATRICK
You really don’t want to know.
AARON
(royally pissed)
Fuck him up! Fuck them both up! I’m
gonna teach y’all not to FUCK with
Aaron Thomas!
Then, as the guy hits the ground, Patrick’s eyes GLISTEN and
several DIRT TENTACLES grab Guy 1.
He begins to whimper.
Brandon finally reaches the lake and stops for a minute. He’s
still processing everything he just watched.
PATRICK (V.O.)
Chocolate cake...
Patrick’s hands are spread out, showing his LONG DARK TALONS
AND GOLDEN EYES.
PATRICK (V.O.)
Don’t be scared. I promise not to
kill you.
BRANDON
No! It... It’s you!
Brandon wants to run, but his legs feel like steel. He can’t
move.
PATRICK (V.O.)
He likes you, Juliet. Jackson likes
you and that’s a problem.
The shadows creep into the trees, DARKENING the branches into
a thick OBSIDIAN SHADE.
JACKSON
Brandon...
The ground shakes and then, the DIRT TENTACLES rise from the
ground to tear down Jackson’s barrier.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Go!
65.
PATRICK
No! You stay right here!
JACKSON
What the fuck are you doing here,
Patrick?
PATRICK
(almost sadden by the
response)
Jackson! Is that how you greet me?
After all this time, little
brother? After what you did?
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Don’t you leave me!
GERRY
(breathing heavily)
What the FUCK was that? What the
FUCK--
AARON
Shut up! Shut the FUCK up!
GERRY
I’m not staying here!
AARON
Get back here!!
PATRICK
You’re thinking I’m a werewolf.
They don’t exist, you know. Not the
way you know them.
AARON
I-I don’t give a fu--
PATRICK
Shhh! I don’t speak to me like
that. I don’t appreciate it.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Gerry’s heart had a bitter taste to
it.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Are you going to cut me? Here, let
me help.
Patrick takes his own talons and scratches his own face,
drawing blood. Then he takes his own blood and smears it
across Aaron’s face. Patrick’s cut heals up.
Aaron turns away, but Patrick grabs his face and forces it
back towards him.
AARON
(huffing)
What are you?
PATRICK
Your God.
AARON
Go to Hell!
PATRICK
Fucking rot sack, there’s no Hell.
But there are other places. I’ll
show you.
Aaron’s eyes suddenly goes WHITE and his jaw drops like a
broken puppet.
68.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Now, you are perfect! And with my
guidance, you will finally teach
this town not to FUCK with Aaron
Thomas.
69.
BRANDON
Where are we?
JACKSON
My room. I thought it would be
safer here.
BRANDON
That guy... It was him, the thing
that killed my friends.
JACKSON
Yeah, that was Patrick.
BRANDON
And he remembered me, he fucking
remembered me!
JACKSON
I’m sorry, Brandon. I thought it
was over. I thought I trapped him
for a long time.
BRANDON
Patrick... Y-You know him?
JACKSON
Yes.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
I hoped he wouldn’t try to find me
after the last time we crossed
paths...
Silence.
BRANDON
He’s just like you?
70.
JACKSON
He’s the oldest of us paens and the
most damaged... He was like a
brother to me.
BRANDON
Aaron and the other guys--
JACKSON
Dead. Anything Patrick touches is
as good as dead.
BRANDON
Jackson, take me home.
JACKSON
(defeated)
Okay.
JACKSON
(whispers)
Brandon has been asleep all night.
BRANDON
What did you say?
JACKSON
I just did a lullaby to your
family.
BRANDON
A lullaby?
JACKSON
It’s like an incantation... A
spell.
Brandon nods.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
I didn’t want you to have any drama
at home, they won’t know you’ve
been out all night.
BRANDON
Jackson, why did you keep the truth
from me? You could told me about
Patrick.
JACKSON
(pause)
I thought I was protecting you, but
I fucked up. I’m sorry, I haven’t
been thinkin’ right since we met. I
should’ve never gotten so close to
you--
BRANDON
(low voice)
Oh...
72.
JACKSON
No, no I didn’t mean that. I’m...
Shit!
BRANDON
Maybe you’re right. We shouldn’t
try to make this work. Not the way
this is heading.
JACKSON
Brandon--
BRANDON
Please go... I can’t...
Mary and Brandon enter the diner, noticing the small crowd.
MARY
(to Brandon)
What’s going on?
Blessing steps away from the crowd, and walks over to Mary
and Brandon.
BLESSING
Mary, something fucked up happened
last night.
MARY
Tell me.
BLESSING
(speaking low)
Gerry Fort, Abe Wills and Chris
Maggs were found torn to pieces in
the woods. The sheriff’s callin’
for help from all over the state.
BRANDON
Do they have any idea how this
happened?
73.
BLESSING
None, but witnesses saw Aaron with
the boys last night. The police are
lookin’ for him now. Abby’s at the
station; she’s been there all
mornin’.
MARY
Lord, I knew that boy was trouble.
MARY (CONT’D)
I’ll call Abby’s Mama and check on
her.
(looks to the group)
Everybody, don’t be stirrin’ up
rumors. Hopefully, we will hear
from the sheriff soon.
BLESSING
We ain’t never had mess this bad in
Marion. I feel like we’re in
Memphis.
BRANDON
You can’t tell me this town’s that
safe and quiet.
BLESSING
Well, there was a moonshiner scam a
year ago, but this shit here is
gangster.
BLESSING (CONT’D)
I bet the churches will be full of
folks this week.
74.
JACKSON
Where are you? Show yourself, you
son of a bitch!
Silence.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Patrick!
Patrick appears.
PATRICK
(smiling)
Nice, little brother. Using an old
game to find me.
JACKSON
Why are you here?
PATRICK
Do I need to explain myself? You
banished me, left me to rot in the
ground! What do--
JACKSON
Answer me!
BRANDON
I need you. We need you. We need to
be a family again! To take our
rightful place in the mystic
realms.
JACKSON
A family? Really? You fucked up our
home with your psycho ways! We were
lucky the Divine Counsel didn’t
come for us after what you did!
PATRICK
Listen to you, Jackson. I hear
nothing but fear in your voice! You
never ran from a fight, you
relished in it. Have you forgotten
who we are?
75.
PATRICK (CONT'D)
We’re heirs to the power of Pa’an.
The God of Beasts and Life. The
first and last supreme being!
JACKSON
Of course I know who we are. And I
know the code we’re supposed to
honor. As high beings we do not
slaughter humans or supernaturals
for sport! Merrick taught us--
PATRICK
Merrick was a fool. He wanted us to
stay hidden from the world, but
I’ve changed that, little brother.
We will be worshipped as Gods!
JACKSON
No, Patrick!
PATRICK
Our kind have walked this Earth
before Christ. Why should we cower
and act like little bitches? We are
meant to rule!
JACKSON
We’re not meant to rule anything!
We’re supposed to--
PATRICK
Join me, please.
JACKSON
No!
PATRICK
Jackson, I will not ask again.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
Join me, or I’ll go after your boy!
I will kill him. Then, I’ll go
after his family and this fucking
town if you don’t join me!
JACKSON
I’ll stop you. I will find you and
stop you.
PATRICK
You tried before.
76.
JACKSON
My Dad stopped me then, but this
time... I swear--
PATRICK
The deaths of these good people
will be on your hands. And your
little boyfriend? Maybe I’ll fuck
him before I eat him raw!
JACKSON
Patrick, you--
BRANDON
Aunt Mary, I’m going back home to
check on Nana.
MARY
Yeah, yeah that’s a good idea...
Maybe, I should close early. You
want to take the car?
BRANDON
No, I’ll walk.
MARY
Brandon...
MARY (CONT’D)
Are you all right?
BRANDON
Yeah... Yeah, I’m good, Aunt Mary.
I’m good.
77.
MARY
That’s good to hear. I was worried
for a bit.
BRANDON
No need to worry, I’m fine.
MARY
Good.
BRANDON
(quietly to himself)
This is so fucked up.
BRANDON
Nana!
NANA
I’m upstairs!
NANA (CONT’D)
Why are you home?
BRANDON
I was worried about you... With the
murders and all. Plus, Aunt Mary’s
thinking about closing the diner
early.
78.
NANA
Well, she shouldn’t do that. Folks
need a place to go and feel safe.
And don’t worry about me, God’s
watching this house.
BRANDON
Nana, you didn’t see... The people
at the diner or in the streets.
They’re totally shaken up.
NANA
(nods)
How are you holding up?
BRANDON
I’m good, Nana. It’s just really
intense in town right now.
NANA
This town is strong. We’ve been
through a lot over the years, but
we always bounce back. Just like
you, my Grandson, we’ll keep moving
forward. Now, go back to the diner
and help your Aunt.
JACKSON
(in both English and Greek
language at the same
time)
Where is Patrick?
JACKSON (CONT’D)
(in both English and Greek
language at the same
time)
Where is he?
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Damnmit!
He joins Jackson.
KEN
Any luck?
JACKSON
No. No sign of him.
KEN
He’ll pop up. It’s not like him to
stay quiet for too long.
JACKSON
I just want to be there when he
does.
KEN
There’s something else bothering
you.
JACKSON
(stops walking)
It’s difficult.
KEN
It’s about him, Brandon...
Jackson nods.
JACKSON
Yeah.
KEN
You like this boy?
JACKSON
I fucked up, dad. I’ve probably put
him in danger, maybe his family,
too.
KEN
We can protect his family. We have
enough magic to do so.
JACKSON
But I should’ve known better.
Getting involve with someone
outside of our world is a selfish
act. I should’ve--
KEN
Jackson... Do you like him?
JACKSON
I do. He’s everything I could ask
for.
Ken grins.
KEN
Then, go for it.
JACKSON
I can’t.
81.
KEN
Your Mama tried to push me away,
but I stayed, and I never regretted
it.
JACKSON
I don’t want him to die because of
me.
KEN
Then, don’t let it happen. Don’t
let him die.
KEN (CONT’D)
We’ll deal with this together. We
have before and we’ll do it again.
He turns around and pulls out his FURRY DOLL, Fern, from the
back of his pillows.
BRANDON
I haven’t talked to you in a
while...
BRANDON (CONT’D)
Where do I start?
(beat)
I thought... I thought things would
be good here, especially with
Jackson being around.
BRANDON (CONT’D)
I should’ve said something to him.
I should’ve told--
BRANDON
Jackson?
Jackson lays his head against the side of the house and
places his hand on the window.
JACKSON
(in Greek)
Keep this home safe from harm.
SALLY NOBLE, 25, pretty girl, is drying her hair and dancing
to the music on the RADIO.
SALLY
Y’all are really quiet in there!
Silence.
SALLY (CONT’D)
Mom? Mom? Barry?
Sally turns off the radio and opens the bathroom door slowly.
SALLY
Mom? Barry?
SALLY (CONT’D)
Mom? Did y’all leave already? I
told you I’ll be a---
PATRICK
She had toast.
She runs to the living room and sees BARRY sitting in the
ROCKING CHAIR, THROAT SLASHED.
PATRICK
Stop being a bad girl.
He pushes her down on the floor and put his foot on her
chest.
SALLY
(crying)
P-Please, d-don’t kill me.
PATRICK
I’m not going to kill you.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
He is.
85.
AARON
(gruffly)
Her screams sounds like sex.
PATRICK
You say the most interesting
things.
He smiles.
PATRICK
Sally, remember this. You die today
because of Jackson! He wouldn’t
come back with me, so he rather let
good folks like you die horribly!
It’s his fault, Sally!
PATRICK (CONT’D)
It is ALL his fault!
Then, she reaches for her BINGO MARKERS and puts them in her
purse.
She looks through the small glass frame and opens the door.
NANA
(grinning)
Well, hi Jackson. Good mornin’ to
you.
JACKSON
Good mornin’ to you too, Miss
Beverly. Is Brandon home?
NANA
He is. Come in.
NANA (CONT’D)
Brandon!
NANA (CONT’D)
I’ll leave you two alone.
Nana walks away from the two of them. Brandon slowly steps
closer to Jackson.
JACKSON
Can we talk?
BRANDON
Yeah, yeah that’s fine.
87.
JACKSON
I just wanted to say again that I’m
sorry. I should’ve told you about
Patrick when I saw him in your
mind.
BRANDON
Why did you keep that from me?
JACKSON
I... I didn’t want to get you
involved and... I didn’t want you
to be afraid of me.
BRANDON
I wouldn’t be, Jackson. Not after
what we shared... You mean a lot to
me.
JACKSON
So you do. Ever since I met you,
I’ve been so happy. It’s been a
long time since I’ve felt like
this. I didn’t want to lose that,
Brandon.
BRANDON
Same here... And while I’m still
pissed at you, I still care. I just
want to help you--
JACKSON
You can’t. This is way out of your
league.
BRANDON
Patrick murdered my friends! I have
to do something!
JACKSON
Brandon, listen to me! You saw what
Patrick can do! It’s too dangerous--
BRANDON
Listen! I’m a Black man in America.
Everyday is dangerous. Besides
Patrick was coming here even if I
met you or not. At least now, I
have a fighting chance...
88.
BRANDON (CONT'D)
I have you.
JACKSON
(low voice)
I will do everything to keep you
here with me.
BRANDON
I know.
JACKSON
You wanna go somewhere?
BRANDON
Jackson, please tell me more about
you.
JACKSON
Okay, what do you want to know?
BRANDON
The Wikipedia version?
JACKSON
Well, my kind has been around since
Jesus, even before then. We come
from all over the world and we’re
kinda like brothers.
Brandon nods.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
We had a mentor named Merrick. He
was a Paen from the generation
before mine.
BRANDON
So there’s a group of you in every
generation.
JACKSON
Yeah.
BRANDON
And Merrick, where is he?
JACKSON
He died from cancer a year ago.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Merrick taught us how to master our
powers. And honor the code of the
Mystic Realms.
BRANDON
The Mystic Realms?
JACKSON
Other dimensions of supernaturals.
BRANDON
(overwhelmed, but
attentive)
Okay, the Mystic Realms. Continue.
JACKSON
The code is simple... while we
inhabit Earth, we do not kill
humans or other supernaturals.
However, there are exceptions. For
thousands of years, we honored the
code. But Patrick didn’t care for
it or any rules.
BEGIN FLASHBACK:
JACKSON (V.O.)
Patrick believed we should be Gods,
and he... He did things to prove
his point. He was murdering people
as a game, hoping to be the ‘Thing
creeping in the dark’.
JACKSON (V.O.)
I confronted Patrick and some of
our brothers who joined him. He
said that I was becomin’ too human
and afraid of our destiny. Merrick
tried to bind him to our home in
Florida, but Patrick found a way to
break the spell.
JACKSON (V.O.)
He followed me and my Dad while we
were on vacation. Patrick attacked
us using everything he had. I
haven’t been in a life or death
fight before, but I was ready for
him.
Flashback shot. Jackson is dark, you can only see his eyes.
He is reaching out, like he’s summoning something. Shadows
are surrounding him.
JACKSON (V.O.)
I was wielding energies strong
enough to trap Patrick in the
earth, but it triggered somethin’
dark in me and I completely lost
it. It took every bit of magic my
Dad and Merrick had to bring me
back.
END FLASHBACK
BRANDON
Wow... And that’s why you left
Orlando?
JACKSON
(nodding)
I needed to get away from all of
it. That battle damaged my
brothers’ trust in me. So, we left
and headed here.
BRANDON
This dark side... Does it come out
often?
JACKSON
No, but it’s a natural part of me.
No one knows why, it just is. But
I’m learning how to control it.
BRANDON
Do you think you’re ready to fight
again?
92.
JACKSON
I have to... To beat Patrick, I
have no choice but to be ready.
BRANDON
You’ll beat him. I know you will.
JACKSON
I hope so.
93.
They kiss.
JACKSON
I’ll be back, all right?
Brandon looks worried, but Jackson runs his hands through his
hair in hopes to calm him.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Don’t make that face, I’ll be back.
Brandon nods.
Jackson smiles.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Thanks for sticking with me through
this.
BRANDON
Just be safe.
JACKSON
I will, I promise.
Abby stops and pulls out her phone to see if she has any
calls.
BRANDON
Any word?
ABBY
Nothing. It’s like Aaron vanished
or something.
BRANDON
He... Could be scared, or--
ABBY
Or dead.
BRANDON
Abby, I’m--
ABBY
Look, he’s good sometimes. I’ve
seen it, but he was destined for a
bad ending.
Ken takes his NECKLACE off and looks at the small key
attached.
KEN
I wish you were still here, Sara.
We really need you. Jackson really
needs you.
Ken holds the picture for a few more seconds and puts it back
in the box.
Ken walks out the front door and goes about hundred feet in
the yard.
Ken walks hundred feet from the house and throws the seeds on
the ground. The seeds glow.
Ken looks down and sees the MAP OF THE TOWN and notices the
RED DOT near the Sock Hop.
KEN
Patrick!
Brandon throws the bag in the bin and Abby closes it.
BRANDON
That’s it.
ABBY
I’m gonna run to my car really
quick.
BRANDON
I’ll be at door.
AARON
(drawn out and dry)
Abby...
Abby can’t see his face, but she knows it’s him.
ABBY
Aaron... Aaron?
AARON
Baby, help me.
ABBY
Where have you been? Everybody’s
looking for you.
ABBY (CONT’D)
You have to go to the police,
they...
Abby freezes once she sees his pale sunken face and his BLOOD
STAINED HANDS.
ABBY (CONT’D)
(shocked)
Aaron, your hands!
AARON
(dryly)
I’ve done something bad.
Abby quickly holds him, buries her head in his cold chest.
ABBY
We’ll figure something out. I’m
sure you didn’t do anything to
Gerry and the others. But we--
98.
AARON
(in her ear)
You stupid bitch.
Abby sees his true twisted face... This is no longer the man
she knew.
ABBY
(choked up)
Aaron... No!
AARON
So easy to get you crawling back to
me. You were always so eager to
please.
BRANDON
Abby, get the fuck out of here!
AARON
You’re gonna have to hit me harder
than that, bitch boy.
Aaron tries to get up, but Brandon takes another swing and
knocks Aaron back down.
Brandon drops the plank and heads back to the Sock Hop.
99.
PATRICK
She still loves him. Even though he
tried to killed her, she still
loves him.
BRANDON
What did you do to her?
PATRICK
She’s alive.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
I can smell him all over you.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
You’re sweet on him, lust after
him. I can smell it all over you
like dog shit.
BRANDON
(firmly)
Jackson’s looking for you.
PATRICK
Oh, I know that.... I know that!
I’m looking for him, too. However,
he just won’t come with me because
I want him to. But if I shake your
bloody body in his face, well, how
can he refuse?
BRANDON
Fuck you! You will never get him!
PATRICK
(laughs)
You’re not afraid of me anymore...
Tell me this, Juliet. Do you really
know Jackson?
PATRICK (CONT’D)
You think he’s this loverboy, this
white knight... He’s a killer. The
best at what he does.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
I see what he likes about you.
Strong, cute... I bet you’re one
hell of a fuck.
Patrick, with super speed, takes Brandon’s arm and tosses him
a few feet into several empty boxes.
PATRICK (CONT'D)
Don’t you raise your hand at me,
human! You don’t have to be alive
when I see Jackson.
KEN
(in Greek)
Keep Him in Place!
KEN (CONT’D)
You okay?
101.
BRANDON
No...
(stands up)
Will that hold him?
KEN
Not for long, we need to go.
BRANDON
Wait! I can’t leave Abby--
KEN
We’ll put her next to the door!
Ken and Brandon gather Abby and moves her to the back door.
KEN (CONT’D)
Okay, let’s go!
102.
The two men are speeding through the back roads. Brandon is
pensive and Ken is focused.
BRANDON
This is beyond real.
KEN
You only seen half of it...
Brandon, right?
BRANDON
(nods)
Are you one of the Paens?
KEN
(grins)
No, I’m Jackson’s Dad, Ken.
BRANDON
Thanks for saving me.
KEN
Don’t thank me yet. We got to
survive the night.
BRANDON
Where’s Jackson?
KEN
I don’t know, I was hoping you
knew. He’s--
KEN
Fuck!
(turn to Brandon)
Brandon?
BRANDON
I’m fine!
103.
KEN
We’re not far from my house! Grab
that bag behind you and let’s go!
AARON
Where are you goin’?
AARON (CONT’D)
(gritty)
I have so much power, man! Who knew
being in this shitty town would
finally pay off!
KEN
(in pain)
He’s using you boy.
AARON
Maybe I’m using him, fucker!
Aaron pulls out his HUNTING KNIFE and starts walking over to
Ken.
Then, a GUN SHOT fills the night! Aaron goes down after being
shot in the shoulder.
BRANDON
Got you, bitch boy!
PATRICK
Wait.
Patrick squats down and slaps Ken. After a few times, Ken
slowly awakes.
PATRICK (CONT’D)
The loyal father.
KEN
(scratchy)
Stay away from my son.
PATRICK
He’s NOT your son!
KEN
(scratchy)
You always hated that he chose me
over you. He wanted to be a real
man rather than some low-rent demon
like you.
Patrick raises his dark skeletal hand over Ken’s face. Ken is
quickly in a trance.
PATRICK
I could turn you into a slave like
Aaron. Or I could take the pain you
have endured all your life and
increase it tenfold.
JACKSON (O.S.)
Aaron...
JACKSON (CONT’D)
Monster!
JACKSON (CONT’D)
You’ve killed innocent people!
Patrick licks the dark blood from the side of his mouth.
PATRICK
It’s your fault! You made me do
this! You ran away from us, from
your heritage!
Instantly, the ground rumbles and rises up. MUD and ROOTS
surround Jackson’s legs, moving upward.
Patrick uses his powers to make the dirt and roots mold
around Jackson, holding him in place.
Jackson motions his arms and magically breaks the mold around
him.
JACKSON
Enough, Patrick!
106.
The branches grab Patrick’s arms and legs, stretching him out
in mid-air.
JACKSON (CONT’D)
I warned you! I told you to stay
away from me and my own!
PATRICK
(strangled voice)
See? Look at... Your glorious
power! The blood of the Panes runs
through you.
Patrick screams.
The dogs’ red eyes are staring at Brandon, waiting for their
master’s word.
JACKSON
Brandon has nothin’ to do with
this!
PATRICK
(shouting)
He has EVERYTHING to do with this!
He’s poison, Jack! He has
domesticated you! Bound you to your
humanity!
PATRICK (CONT’D)
I have set things in motion. Our
kind will rule this world, but we
need you. We’re lost without you,
little brother!
JACKSON
Set Brandon free, Patrick!
PATRICK
No! You’re not listening to me!
JACKSON
Your actions will only get us
killed!
PATRICK
Or make us the new Gods! Everything
I’ve done is for us! Every line
I’ve crossed will make every being
to fall on their knees and worship
us!
JACKSON
What have you done?
PATRICK
Jackson, please!
PATRICK (CONT’D)
RIP HIM!
109.
JACKSON
I gotta get you out of here!
BRANDON
Jackson!
JACKSON
Stand close to me!
Brandon nods.
Jackson raises his hands above him and brings them down,
unleashing CIMMERIAN SHADOW BOLTS at the dogs.
The bolts knock the dogs a few feet away from him and
Brandon.
The dogs start to whimper and run off into the woods.
BRANDON
Jackson?
JACKSON
Stay back!
PATRICK
You continue to break my heart. I
have no choice but to do this.
JACKSON (V.O.)
No!
PATRICK (V.O.)
Once I set you free, the blood of
these filthy humans will run
through these streets. Your name
will be legend!
JACKSON
No!
PATRICK
Bye, Juliet!
The root SPRAWLS out like mercury all over Patrick, covering
his entire body.
BRANDON
For my friends, fucker!
JACKSON
Please... Get away...
BRANDON
No!
BRANDON (CONT’D)
Stay with me, Jackson. Don’t go
dark... Stay with me.
The SHADOWS wash over them both like BLACK FLAMES, engulfing
their bodies.
JACKSON
(faintly)
Wh-What did you do?
BRANDON
I stopped Patrick with some of your
Dad‘s stuff--
JACKSON
No, to me... You, you were in my
head... My soul. Did you feel it?
BRANDON
I-I did. It was... It was
incredible.
JACKSON
(looks at Brandon)
Y-you saved me.
113.
BRANDON
See, I told you I could help you.
KEN
It worked! It fucking worked! That
root was a Calleeda root... It was
meant for Jackson. I kept it just
in case he ever lost control of his
powers.
BRANDON
So, Patrick’s trapped in that root?
KEN
Yep.
BRANDON
Wow.
JACKSON
So, let’s just go to a movie next
time, okay?
BRANDON (V.O.)
After that night, Jackson had a lot
of work to do.
The sheriff was talking with some people, while others stood
around.
BRANDON (V.O.)
He used his powers to convince the
town that a murderous suicide cult
were behind the killings.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Jackson told the sheriff that the
cult brainwashed Aaron.
Aaron opens one comic book and sees horrible murder scene.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Jackson tried to fix Aaron.
BRANDON (V.O.)
But his mind... His mind was in
outer space. Whatever Patrick did
to him will take a lot of time to
repair.
BRANDON (V.O.)
But in all, Marion stayed the same.
No one moved out or started their
own witch hunt for the cult.
BRANDON (V.O.)
But if they only knew about the
real killer. How he’s trapped in
some kind of magic sweet potato in
my boyfriend’s house.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Hell, if they only knew about my
boyfriend...
115.
BRANDON (V.O.)
There’s a lot about him that
remains a mystery to me. There are
things that scares me as well.
BRANDON (V.O.)
Being with him could cost me so
much and yet, give me so much more.
BRANDON (V.O.)
It’s all a risk... But I wouldn’t
have it any other way.
FADE TO BLACK
