Universal Design for Learning (UDL): In this activity, there are multiple means of making sense of the
information that is being presented. There are visuals, videos, text, and web links so that students can learn in
a way that best suits them. Because this activity will be done as a class, students who understand one thing
will explain that while learning something new from other students who understand another thing that they
do not. The videos also offer closed caption subtitles for students who learn better by reading as opposed to
listening.

Lesson idea implementation:

This activity is designed to be implemented as an introduction to the unit of living things. The teacher will
introduce the activity by showing students how to access Education Discovery and explaining what an
interactive board is. Then, the teacher will proceed to pull up the interactive board about the basic needs of
plants and animals. The students will take the role of the teacher, as they explore the information presented
in the interactive board while the teacher facilitates and asks scaffolding and summarizing questions. The
students will explore the videos, interactive pictures, and web-links on the classroom SMART board, taking
turns navigating on the board. The activity will take ~35-40 minutes to complete.
Student learning will be assessed by a simple ticket-out-the-door questionnaire, assessing information

that they learned about plant and animal needs. This will allow the teacher to get an idea of how much
students know about the needs of plants and animals before beginning to teach lessons in the unit. This can
help the teacher gear lessons towards building upon what they already know and strengthening any
weaknesses that the class has. It also allows for differentiation in group/center work. Because this is an
introductory activity, learning will be extended as the students progress through the unit. The end goal would
be for students to create their own interactive board on the needs of plants and animals as a review for the
end of unit assessment. The lesson will be concluded by the teacher handing out the ticket-out-the-door.
Students will receive their work back at the beginning of the next class so they can self-assess where they are
at going into the unit.

Reflective Practice: I feel that this activity will impact student learning in a positive way, as it will get students
excited about and engaged in a new unit. Students will also be obtaining base-line knowledge of the unit they
are about to discover and learn about. To further extend this lesson, students will continue to learn about the
needs of plants and animals so that at the end of the unit, they can create their own interactive board on
Discovery Education as a review tool for them to study before the end of unit assessment. Other technology
tools, such as Popplett, could also be used to organize and display information on this topic.
