________ ACTIVITY 4 Date: ______________

IT’S HOPPING TIME

Objective: In this activity, you should be able to gather data to determine who hops fastest.

Background:

The rate at which an object moves is called speed (s). It is equal to the distance travelled divided by time of
travel. The SI unit of speed is in m/s. In describing the motion of an object, direction where it is going must also be
considered. Speed with direction is referred to as velocity (v).
Materials: Cellphone (stopwatch), calculator, meterstick, pen/pencil, activity sheet

Procedure:
1. Select a leader to manage the group.
2. Decide a place/space where to conduct the activity.
3. Each participant will hop from the starting line up to the finish line and return halfway as fast as they could.
4. Record the time travelled in seconds (Round up to whole number) in your data table 1.
5. Compute the speed and velocity using the following formula:
s=d÷t where s = speed, d= distance, t= time
v=đ÷t where v = velocity, đ = displacement, t = time
6. Record your answer in data table 1.
7. Answer the guide questions below.
8. Prepare for a group presentation.

Guide Questions:
1. What quantities did you measure for your data?

2. At constant distance, how is speed related to the time of travel?

3. At constant time, how is velocity related to the displacement?

4. How does speed differ from velocity?
