Introducing to you, Malhar 2018
To be able to transcend time, and thrive over the past years is one of
the unique qualities of this student festival and we, at Malhar 2018, wish
to further this culture, this legacy, this work spirit. We, the Organizing
Committee, hereby invite colleges from across the country to help us
make this Malhar a true milestone. With improved events, engaging
workshops, interesting pre-events, and a promising experience, this year
we wish to extend the ‘Malhar feeling’ to each and every participant
member. We urge the participants to refer to the ‘Rules and Regulations’
for all further details.

Hello Reader(s),
Malhar 2018 has chosen ‘A TIME TURNER’ as its theme in order to:
Keeping these three goals in mind, Malhar 2018 brings to you unique
methods to improve upon pre-existing structures and new ways of
fostering camaraderie among students of different colleges and calibres. To
do so, it has created a whole clutch of novel events, challenging games and
perplexing situations for the wholesome enjoyment of the 3-day fest.
Through the 2018 edition of Malhar, we hope to encourage and boost talent,
while developing an inclusive attitude, an inventive outlook and an amiable
atmosphere. Malhar 2018 dares us to venture beyond our boundaries and to
make our lives fun-filled as well as fulfilling.

GENERAL SCORING
• + 5 for registering for an event (ticking the box next to the event name)
• -10 for NOT TURNING UP for Eliminations after registering.
• +10 for qualifying from the Eliminations to the Finals.
• -30 for NOT TURNING UP for Direct Finals or Finals after qualifying
from the Eliminations.

Flagship Events
Every department has one event that carries the maximum number of points.
These events are called Flagship Events.
Crossover Events
When an event is handled by 2 departments, that event is a Crossover Event.
Example: If IPA and WPA have an event together, it’ll be a crossover event.

SOCIAL CAUSE: YARD SALE
Yard Sale is one of Malhar’s social causes, where contingents have the opportunity to
donate certain things on the basis of which they get certain contingent points. Details of
the point system of Yard Sale will be made available in the Rules and Regulations manual.
TRUMP EVENTS
• Every contingent will have 1 Trump Card that they need to use to trump on one event.
It is compulsory for every contingent to use the 1 Trump Card.
• In case you trump on an event and you feature anywhere in the top 3 positions, you
will be rewarded with 60 extra points for the contingent.
• In case you trump on an event and you don’t feature anywhere in the top 3 positions,
60 points will be deducted from your contingent points.
All events except for Flagship events and Crossover events will be open for trump.
TRANSPARENCY
On both the Eliminations and the Final Days, the score sheets after being marked by the
judges, will be put up on display in the Economics Department, First floor, St. Xavier’s
College.
Taking photographs of the score sheet is not allowed.
Events that won’t be going for transparency will be mentioned in the Rules and
Regulations manual.

• The Malhar Trophy is a result of cumulative scores of the three sub-trophies for
Malhar as well as points earned for other events.
• The three sub-trophies are the Fine Arts Trophy, the Literary Arts Trophy and the
Performing Arts Trophy (inclusive of IPA and WPA Events).
• These trophies are awarded to the contingent securing the highest scores for events
under that particular department.
• The Outstation Trophy is awarded to the outstation college collecting the maximum
points.
• In case of a tie, the colleges with equal points will share the trophy.
• Trophies are also awarded to colleges securing second and third place overall.
ADMIN OFFICE
The Admin Office will be located in LR14 on all days of Malhar (Eliminations and Finals).
Entry to the Admin Office is restricted.

TERMINOLOGY
1. Contingent Leader (CL)
The CL is the official college representative and fulfils the registration and other duties.
He/She cannot participate in events. It is mandatory for a college to appoint one CL.
PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY
Only undergraduate students are allowed to take part in Malhar. However, Junior
College Students are eligible if they have an attached undergraduate wing. At Malhar, we
invite people from different colleges, locations, genders, languages and differently abled
students to actively participate.
Students who have taken a drop in the current academic year (2018-19) will not be eligible
to participate.

This round consists of a Monopoly based board game. Teams have to make chemical
compounds and solve physical equations in order to gather points. Teams have to
perform tasks according to the biohazards they face along the game.

BE A GOOD SPORT
Sports Based Treasure Hunt Event

Eliminations
Teams have to answer a written sports-based quiz consisting of riddles
and puzzles.
Finals
This round consists of a sports-based treasure hunt where teams have to solve
riddles to find clues and perform tasks at specific locations. The first team to solve
every riddle and perform every task, in the fastest time, shall be pronounced winner.
Please Note:
• The final treasure hunt will not take place inside the college, but in the
surrounding locations.
• Participants shall be disqualified if they are found using their phones or resorting
to other methods of cheating.

Eliminations
It consists of a block and tackle debate where each team participates
individually. Participants have to speak for (tackle) and against (block)
a particular topic. Whenever the word ‘switch’ is used, the other team
member picks up from where the former left off.
Semi-finals
In each round, there will be a case for which all participants will be equally liable
while they have to present their case to the Court.
Finals
A Crime Investigation Round where the participants represent a suspect that they
must defend in a murder trial based on clues found.
Please Note:
• No international, national or state laws apply in this event. This event is based
in a fictional realm.
• The format of the courtroom will be explained at the event. Participants should
follow this format.

Fantasy Football Event

Eliminations
Teams have to answer a written test comprising of questions on football, business
and statistics.
Finals
Teams will be pitted against each other, where an auction takes place and teams
have to choose a stadium, sponsor, and buy players with the money given to them.
A simulation of these teams will be conducted where the team with the best players
accompanied by the appropriate use of their tactics wins. This happens over three
seasons where the teams face off against each other and the team with the highest
revenue wins.

Teams have to answer a quiz based on Economics.
Finals
Teams have to compete in an Economics quiz, where every right
answer will give them currency to buy stocks, so as to prepare a portfolio, the
values of which will be revealed at the end of every round. There will be 5
rounds each of 24 questions. The teams will also have to perform tasks based on
calamities or economic booms that will hit them at the end of rounds two to five.
The team with the best performing portfolio throughout the course of the game will
be the winning team.
Please Note:
The mechanism to determine stock prices will not be revealed to the
participants.

Teams have to play a game, rules of which will be declared on the spot.
Quarterfinals (Day 2)
Teams will play a different game.

• The rounds are subject to change.

• Winning is not a necessary factor that ensures qualification to the next round.
Each game and each round will have different factors like scoring, timing, etc.

Teams will be given a theme to base scripts on. The teams then have to
perform the scripted comedy sketch. Scripts will be vetted by the
organisers. The top teams will be selected and must compulsorily have to attend
an Improv Workshop on the same day, where the games for the Finals will be taught.

The round will consist of the Improv games that would have been taught to the
contingents.

what art means to you with our events that go from quilling to
photography to headdress design; there’s something for every
kind of artist. Make your own art and find yourself in a stroke of
brilliance. Don’t let conventions hold you back and be the
one in a (ver)million artist you’ve always wanted to be. We’re a
department that explores and embraces the crazy artist in all of us.
Welcome to Fine Arts: for everyone who believes that art sets you
free!

HAT-TRICK
Headdress and Accessory/Face painting event

Participants must create a pencil sketch of their design for a headdress along with
an accompanying accessory (e.g. cape, veil, etc.) and/or face painting based on a
given theme.
Finals
Participants must make the headdress and accessory and then assemble it on the
subject to create the final look. Participants must make sure that the headdress
and accessory do not extend below the chest/bust.
Please Note
Participants are required to write a brief paragraph (during the elimination round)
of not more than 50 words that explains their character.

Photography Event

Participants have to click photographs based on the given theme within a
specified area.
Finals
This round involves storytelling through photography. Participants have to
capture four to five images based on a theme disclosed on the spot. When put
together, these photographs must tell a story without any form of description/
explanation. Upon their return, they will be given time to select and arrange their
photographs in a logical sequence.
Please Note:
• Materials to be used (for eliminations and finals): DSLR camera and transfer cord.
Use of external flash is strictly prohibited. Only 18-55 and/or 50mm lens may be
used during both rounds.
• Participants will be taken outside college for both rounds, accompanied by a
volunteer.
• Participants may or may not use a subject for both rounds.

Tag Team Painting Event

Based on a theme given on the spot, participants must create a painting on the
unstitched canvas provided. Participants in the team, however, cannot work together
and must paint alternately, switching every 15 minutes. Both partners are expected
to participate equally. Their participation (or lack thereof) will be to the discretion of
the organisers. Communication between the partners is strictly prohibited after the
theme has been disclosed.

Participants shall be presented with objects for a duration of 5 minutes post which
they will be required to make a 2D artwork incorporating all of the objects based
solely on memory, using one or more of the media prescribed. Participants are
allowed to alter the color and design of the objects, but must retain the shape and
relative proportions of the objects.
Mediums Required: Water colours, poster colours, acrylic paint, black marker,
pencil, charcoal pencils, non-water soluble colour pencils.

Mystery Box (3D Art) Event

Participants are required to make a 3D artwork from the
random array of materials provided in the box. They will also have to incorporate an
additional surprise element in their artwork.
Materials to be carried: Pencil, pen, glue, scissors, black and white paint.

Rangoli Making Event
Finals
Participants are required to make a rangoli with only four colours of their choice,
along with white. The theme and a surprise element will be disclosed on the final
day of the event. The use of any other tool besides a plain sieve is strictly prohibited.

Miniature Installation Making Event

Participants are required to make a sketch of their installation and state ways to
construct it in accordance with the theme ‘Futurism’. They must also incorporate
into their installation a surprise element that will be disclosed to them on the spot.

Participants must construct a miniature model of the installation, more than
half of which should be made out of recyclable materials that fit into the given
measurements.

will then have to write a third story that connects the first two to arrive at a
conclusion. Each story must not exceed 500 words.

The finals will require all participating teams to do an oral presentation of their idea
in front of a panel. It should cover the following points:
1. Market research (secondary sources only)
2. Production or manufacturing of the product
3. Marketing strategies (wholesale, retail, online)
4. Packaging/ design
5. Branches, or is it online?
6. Plans to move into bigger corporate space
The finals will require a compulsory written report for which the format will be
provided in the Rules and Regulations manual.

Forensic Science and Crime Scene Investigation Event

Participants will attend a workshop where they will learn how to observe, analyze
and piece clues together. The basics of forensic science and analysis will be taught

round.

materials.

and embellishments (no paints allowed).
