Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Producer, Consumer, Decomposer

Content Area: Life Science
Grade Level(s): 4th grade

Content Standard Addressed:

S4L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the roles of organisms and the flow of energy
within an ecosystem.
a. Develop a model to describe the roles of producers, consumer, and decomposers in a community.

Technology Standard Addressed:

ISTE-S3. Knowledge Constructor
a. Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce
creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Selected Technology Tool: Popplet

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

All students would be able to able to interact with the online Popplet matching activity to apply their knowledge
of what they know about the difference between producers, consumers, and decomposers within an ecosystem.
Students will gain this knowledge from an opening YouTube video about the surviving living things within an
ecosystem. After the activity students will be able to illustrate their own example of the flow of energy within an
ecosystem between producer, consumer, and decomposer.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher would begin the lesson by talking about what an ecosystem is and have the students tell them what
they know about different types of ecosystems. The teacher would then ask the student what are some
characteristics of different ecosystems. After the student have listed some then the teacher would introduce the
brief YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJEToQ49Yjc). After the discussion and the video,
students will be introduced to the Popplet graphic organizer where they will participate in a matching activity.
The students would have to match the correct definition and examples to each box labeled producer, consumer,
or decomposer. The students would be assessed as the lesson continues. The students will then share the
correct matching with each other to ensure that everyone has an understanding of the correct matches. To
extend student learning to a higher learning level, students will be asked to create their own flow of energy
within an ecosystem. Students will include a producer, a consumer, and a decomposer. Students will be
assessed using an assigned rubric and also given feedback as well.

Reflective Practice:
After the lesson, I believe that the entire activity would impact student learning. Students will learn that living
things within an ecosystem could not live without each other. The students will be given a chance to create their
own flow of energy chart, which would allow students to achieve Bloom’s Taxonomy Level of creating. The
students will be able to show their knowledge and what they learned through sharing and collaborating with
other. To further extend the lesson, students could use another web-based tool to share their creations and
create their own matching games and graphic organizers.
