Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Using a program such as Timeline, allows students the ability to customize and organize their work in a way
that is easy to use and understand. Students who have trouble with organizing dates and times will find this
tool to be incredibly helpful as it provides then with an easy layout and way of designing. All students will
utilize the timeline to talk about their life and the important events that have happened up until this point in
their life. This is also somewhat of a practice for students so that they will know how to use it for the rest of
the year and in other classes. It also lets them be creative and show their work in an individualized way.
Lesson idea implementation:
To begin the lesson, the teacher will talk about the program they are going to use today (Timeline) while also
talking about what the students will be doing. The teacher will then show what their personal timeline looks
like to give an example as well as something to base their own timeline off of for expectations. Students will
then go to their computers and begin working on their timeline. This should take no more than a class period
and the students will share their timeline the next time they are in class. Students will be assessed by their
presentation, how they present and what they present. This is a basic project that will inform students of
their peers and of a productivity tool that they have most likely not used before. It will allow them to become
comfortable with the program and provide individual differences that can be shared with the class.
Students will use this timeline as a basis for their first writing assignment, where they will take those events
and talk about how those events shaped who they are today. The lesson will conclude with students
presenting their timeline to the class. As students are working on their timeline, the teacher will walk around
and discuss their timeline with students, giving positive feedback and providing students with an idea of how
their timeline should look.

Reflective Practice:
The timeline will help students organize and share information with each other. Students will further extend
their thinking by writing about how those events in their life impacted them and made them who they are
today. Students could also use a different tool to create their timeline, such as PowerPoint.
