Dear Friends,
The Franciscan Renewal Center exists to
witness the Franciscan way of life and share
with others a vision that captures the trans-
formative influence of Franciscan spirituality
for peace and good in the world. So it is with
great joy that we introduce the Franciscan
Mentors Program beginning in October, 2010.
We hope you will look through this catalog and find something that
stirs your soul. I look forward to seeing you on our peaceful grounds.
Fr. Joe
Father Joe Schwab, OFM

charist and access to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Meditation Chapel, desert walk,

between two Arizona landmarks: Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain.
On a directed private retreat you have a spiritual director as a guide for your time
away. A director will help structure your quiet time with scripture, prayer and spiri-
tual practices that will deepen your retreat experience. Our spiritual directors include
lay men and women, priests and religious with experience and training. Our sug-
gested donation for spiritual direction is $60 per visit.

The Franciscan Mentors Program
A certificate program for Casa Community members
There are many special things about the Franciscan Renewal
Center but the one thing that stands out above all the others is our
Franciscanism:
Our belief that God is all love and all goodness and that it is
God ‘s overflowing love that is the source of creation and the
Incarnation.
These are beliefs we want to preserve and pass on. These are
teachings we want to more fully explore. These are values we want
to better understand and support in one another.
Friars at the Casa dedicate October the month of St. Francis of Assisi!
The kick-off event for this year is a retreat led by a native Arizonan,
Cyprian Consiglio. He will lead the celebration in the Franciscan tradi-
tion of prayer, some silence, chanting, singing, teaching and several
guided meditations. This gifted Camaldolese monk, musician and
teacher will draw new insights about the “interior way” from the life of
Francis, the teachings of Jesus, St. Paul and the desert fathers.
Cyprian’s teachings include the joyful message that the call to contem-
plation is universal and awakened in us at baptism. This awakening,
he believes, is one that is already within us and is waiting to be re-
discovered.
Each year, Franciscan men and women all over the world solemnly
gather to commemorate a touching event in the life of St. Francis.
It is called the TRANSITUS – that is, his passage from earthly life to
everlasting life. Francis died (on the evening of October 3rd) just
as the brothers were singing the verse from his Canticle of Brother

Franciscan Order.
The Rosary is the fulcrum of Catholic prayer and faith, yet many
still ask, what is the Rosary? When did it come to be and why? The
Rosary of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary is treasured by the
Franciscan order and is an ancient sacramental dating back to 1422.
This workshop will explore the history of the Rosary and the chaplet
known as the Franciscan Crown. You will design your own Franciscan
beads, have them blessed by a friar, if you choose to, and take home
your beautiful work of art.
What is happening in your life that separates you from living into
deeper meaning?
How is God present or absent in your life?
How do you know God’s direction for your life?

What does it mean to be real, honest and authentic? What does it mean
to practice real communication (even with people who are different or
difficult)? Why are we afraid to be real? Terry teaches us--with very
practical tools--about a life with real and open communication built
on a foundation of kindness, appreciation, honesty, sensitivity and
attention. The retreat will also help us understand that intimacy has
little to do with the other person. Intimacy begins with me.

Ever wonder what really happened in the Sinai desert? Did the apple
truly taste that good? Is it profit or prophet? Just how long did the
Israelites wander in the desert? These questions and many others will
be answered in this exploration of the Hebrew Scriptures.
The Old Testament is an adventure with God. This class reveals how
scripture can be both map and key to that adventure. This provoca-
tive program will keep you thinking long after the day ends. Bring
your Bible.

Birthing Christ
A Weekend Advent Retreat
December 3-5
Michael Crosby, OFM, Cap
Prepare for the birth of the Christ; prepare to give birth to the Christ in
this weekend retreat with inspirational and insightful Capuchin Friar,
Fr. Michael Crosby. Explore the parallels between the themes at the
core of Matthew’s “Infancy Narrative” with those at the core of our
lives. From the presence of angels to the realities of violence, this is not
so much a Bible study as it is an excavation into the heart of who we
are and who the Christ is for us.

pels and Letters of the New Testament managed to change the known
world! In just one day you will be able to share in the challenge and ex-
citement of the early church as they learned more about Jesus and came
to understand their discipleship. This thought-provoking seminar is sure
to both challenge and delight you. Bring your Bible.
You can count on Brother Kelly to know how to celebrate the New Year
– “one step at a time.” Telling it like it is, he reminds us that we do not
reach our potential in life in big leaps, we make it in small steps with
patience and practice. A great coach, Brother Kelly taps into the life of
St. Francis of Assisi for spiritual teachings and practical insights. Come
celebrate the end of what was and the beginning of what will be with
Brother Kelly. Let this New Year be one that you move into with grace, joy
and small steps.
Fee per person includes lodging, meals and materials: $215 single,
$165 double; commuter includes meals and materials: $130.
Check-in Friday, 5pm; dinner, 6pm. Retreat concludes with lunch
on Sunday.

Numbers 20:8
Italian for “In the presence of,” In Presenza Di is an opportunity for the
entire community to gather before the Eucharist for a time of prayer,
praise, teaching and adoration.
On February 26, 2006, the Chapel at the Franciscan Renewal Center was
dedicated as The Conventual Church of Our Lady Of The Angels. Since that
time, many have asked the question: “What is a conventual church?”
Churches are “conventual” when they belong to the convent of the religious
community (in this case, the Franciscans) rather than to the diocese. We are
not a parish.
Family Catechesis
The Church recognizes that parents are the primary faith educators of
their children. Family-based religious education/faith formation is offered
to families registered at Our Lady of the Angels. This process combines
monthly family meetings, home study materials and participation in Sun-
day Liturgy. Meetings are held on Sunday mornings. Registration is open
throughout the year.
First Reconciliation
Children in grades 2 and above can enroll in this sacrament preparation
program, which begins in the fall. This process combines monthly family
meetings with home study materials.
Students who have completed their First Communion and still need to be
confirmed are welcome to participate in this program. Age appropriate
programs are available. Please call for details.
Sacrament of Marriage
Couples wishing to be married at the Church of Our Lady of the Angels
at the Franciscan Renewal Center must schedule an interview with one of
our priests. The preparation period is at least 9 months in advance of the
desired wedding date.

Individual Counseling & Support Groups
The Franciscan Renewal Center provides a staff of professional counselors, all
of whom are licensed by the State of Arizona Board of Behavioral Health. Our
counselors take time from private practices to counsel individuals, families, and
couples with one-on-one sessions, as well as facilitate support groups that deal
with a variety of adult issues. All of their service to the Casa is voluntary.
Grounded in the Gospel concepts of peace and human dignity, the Casa
CounselingMinistry provides an opportunity for its members to serve others. As
“wounded healers,” the ministry has the privilege and responsibility to actively
participate in God’s work through those who reach out to us for hope and care.
The counseling ministry will be closed with no support group meetings on the
following dates: 2010: Labor Day, September 6; Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 26;
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, December 24, 25.
The Franciscan Renewal Center is continuing its mission of being “green” and environmentally
responsible. The paper used in this catalog supports responsible use of forest products.
