Welcome to the Specification Manager

Welcome to the
Specification Manager

What is the Specification Manager

PROCAD’s Specification Manager is a convenient interface for retrieving and viewing
component database information. The database components are an integral part of
PROCAD's 3DSMART Modeler software.
The Specification Manager provides functionality for viewing all component information
and modifying some types of component information.
Additional materials functionality is also provided. For addition information, see Materials
Management: Introduction.
Specification Manager is also used to:
ƒ create new specs
ƒ modify existing specs
ƒ add component types and groups to specs
ƒ import and export specification data
ƒ create or modify specification parameters including default materials,
reducing schedules, wall thickness etc.

Specification Manager Window

The Specification Manager window contains four panes:
ƒ Explorer pane
ƒ Data pane
ƒ Preview pane
ƒ Command pane
The Explorer pane opens when you open the Specification Manager. It contains an
organized structure of folders (component types, sub-folders, and associated component
groups. It also contains an organized structure of specifications and associated components
types and groups.
The Data pane opens when you select a Component Group from the Explorer. It displays
all components and specifications for the selected component group.
The Preview pane opens when you select a component group from the Explorer. It displays
a two-dimensional drawing of the selected component.
The Property pane, beside the Preview pane, displays quick access to the component’s
information.

Preview Pane Property Pane

Explorer Pane Data Pane

Definitions
Explorer will refer to the entire Explorer Pane, whereas Specification Explorer will refer to
the lower section of the Explorer Pane with the specification structure. Conversely, the
Component Explorer will be used to refer to the upper section of the Explorer Pane
containing the component structure of the various libraries.
Component types are general component classifications (Crosses,
for example). Component types are represented by a folder icon. A
folder may contain component type subclasses. For example: The
'Crosses' type contains component sub-types called Cross–Butt
Weld and Cross–Screwed). A component type may also contain
component groups.

Component groups are specific component groupings. (Schedule 10 Butt

Welded Reducing Crosses, for example) Components groups are
represented by a component group icon. Component group names appear

in red text.
Individual components or components appear as a single row within the component data
pane for a component group. For example, for a specific schedule, class, or rating of a
component group there are multiple nominal pipe sizes. One single pipe size for one
specific schedule is an individual component.
The Explorer pane also contains a design library list box. In this illustration the selected
design library is ANSI Piping. List options available depend on your system configuration.

Explorer Pane
The Explorer pane displays component libraries and specifications. Components are
arranged into groups and types.

Component Library Data Pane

The Component Data Pane displays the component data for all items in the selected
component group. Each line of data represents one component. The data pane has scroll bars.
There are four types of component data:
ƒ Key property data appears in gray shaded cells. The key data type in the
example below is Nominal Pipe Size.
ƒ Table property data (data that binds to property tables in the component
database) appears in yellow shaded cells.
ƒ Custom data appears in white cells and is always in bold font. Custom
data is not associated with a property table.
ƒ Spec data defines the specifications classes for each component.
Component data is entered into the database using PROCAD's Component Designer.
This illustration shows a component data display.

Specification Data Pane

The Specification Data Pane displays component sizes and associated data for a component
group assigned to a specification in the current library. Each row of data represents one
component. You can also apply your changes to the database using this pane.
This pane displays the following information for all components:
ƒ assigned material type for each component size
ƒ manufacturer for each component size
ƒ catalog number for each components size
The pane contains a series of drop-down lists that allow you to assign or change component
information within the specification. The Material, Manufacturer and Catalog number drop-
down lists appear for all components. Other drop-down lists will appear depending on the
component:
ƒ Schedule (branching components)
ƒ Wall thickness (main and branch)
ƒ Second material (gaskets)
ƒ Valve tag (valves)

Creating a New Specification: Introduction

To create a new specification, you must perform these procedures:
Create the new specification and assign general parameters
Assign component types, groups, and individual components to the specification

¾ Note: Creating a new specification is different from Adding a

specification. Creating refers to generating a new specification, adding
refers to making an existing specification accessible to one or more
users.

Creating a New Specification

Tip: The easiest way to create new specifications is to use the generic specs that ship with
3DSMART, copy them and add or remove components as required.
This procedure describes the first procedure in creating a new specification - entering
specification parameters. To complete the creation process, you must assign components,
groups, and types.

Page 64

You can manually enter each parameter, or you can copy the parameters from an existing
specification.

To create a new specification...

1. From the Tools menu, select Create spec.

2. Do one of the following:

ƒ To create a new specification manually, ensure the Create like spec box
is empty.
ƒ To create a specification using parameters and components from an
existing specification, ensure the Create like spec box is checked and,
using the drop-down list, select the specification you want to copy.

3. In the Spec box, type a name for the new specification.

4. Using the color list drop-down selection list, select a color for the new specification.
5. In the Description box, type a description for the new specification.

Importing and Exporting Specifications

The Import and Export functions of the Specification Manager allows for data transfer
between two different database installations, either within the same organization, or between
companies. The Export function creates a folder of text files that may then be read by the
Import function. By default, this folder is created on local machine that is running the
Specification Manager application, at C:\Program Files\PROCAD\3DSMART
V2011\specexport\SpecOutput\. The subfolder created will have the same name as the
specification being exported.
There are some limitations to the current specification import and export procedures. Only
one library of components will be exported each time the command is run. Therefore, if you
have components in your specification from two libraries, such as the ANSI piping library
and ASME piping library, you will need to run the Export command twice.
The Export command will only work with components that were shipped by PROCAD.
Custom components will be skipped. Likewise, custom materials or manufacturers that are
associated with the individual components or are associated with the overall specification
properties will also not be exported.
In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, the Specification Manager must be run as an administrator
for the files to be created during the import process. In order to run an application as an
administrator, right-click on the executable, and select the Run as Administrator command.

To export a specification from the database installation currently in use by
