β-Glucan :

 β-Glucans (beta-glucans) comprise a group of β-D-glucose polysaccharides naturally

occurring in the cell walls of cereals, bacteria, and fungi, yeasts, algae, lichens, and plants,
with significantly differing physicochemical properties dependent on source. They are
sometimes used as medicine .
 Each type of beta-glucan comprises a different molecular backbone, level of branching,
and molecular weight which affects its solubility.
Molecular Formula: C18H32O16.
Molecular Weight: 504.438 g/mol

Source Solubility in Water

Bacteria Insoluble
Fungus Insoluble
Yeast Insoluble
Cereal Soluble

Needs Of Fiber:
Soluble fibers, like beta glucan, dissolve partially in water. Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve at all.
Most foods have both kinds of fiber, but the amounts can vary. There are also different kinds of
soluble and insoluble fiber.

Fiber supports good health by helping your body reduce cholesterol and control blood sugar levels.
It also helps with constipation and bowel issues, maintains healthy gut bacteria, and aids in weight
control.

Best Source Of β-Glucan:

Whole Grains. Beta-glucans are found in the bran of many common whole grains, with oats and
barley containing the highest amounts.

 Mushrooms.
 Date Fruit.
 Daily Intake.

Benefits of beta- Glucan:

 Boosts heart health

 Regulates blood sugar levels
 Stimulates immune system

Types Of Beta Glucan:

 Medicinal mushrooms
 Prebiotic (nutrition)
 Resistant starch
 Probiotic
 Xylooligosaccharides

Side Effects of Beta Glucan:

 The potential side effects of beta-glucans, when taken by mouth, are not known. When
used by injection, beta-glucans can cause chills, fever, pain at the injection site, headache,
back and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, high or low blood pressure,
flushing, rashes, decreased number of white blood cells, and increased urine. People with
AIDS who take beta-glucans have developed thickening of the skin of the hands and feet.
 Do not take more than 15 grams per day by mouth, and do not use it for longer than 8
weeks. Intravenous solutions that have microparticles are not safe. They might cause spleen
problems, blood clots, and other dangerous disorders.
Dosing:
By Mouth:
For high cholesterol: 7.5 grams twice daily beta glucans fiber from yeast added to juice has been
used. Barley-derived beta glucans have also been used in doses of 3-10 grams/day.
