(1) For many years the women of Cheju Island in South Korea have made a living
as divers. (2) Today these women divers can make as much as 300 U.S. dollars a
day. (3) However, the job is dangerous and most younger women on the island
don't want to do it. (4) Right now, the youngest diver is 45 years old and the oldest
is 75. (5) In the past, diving was the only way women could get food for their
families. (6) Now it helps them save money for their children's education. (7)
However, today the younger women have other choices as well, which is a good
thing. (8) For example, a young woman named Sunny Hong didn't want to
become a woman diver. (9) She decided to become a tour guide instead. (10) She
said that she wanted some kind of job that she would be good at and where she
could use the English language.
