Group 2:

Objective(s):
To understand better the concept of internal resistance by using a power
supply other than the power pack. New and old batteries are tested as to see
whether or not there is a difference in their behavior or internal resistance.
Own Expectations:
The expectation is that the new battery is able to deliver more voltage to a
consumer, for example make a lamp shine bright.
We know that at the end of the battery life the light shines less bright, as such
we expect that the internal resistance of the battery becomes bigger and
"takes" more voltage across itself other than the lamp.
Method and Equipment:
Equipment:
Voltmeter
Amperemeter
Timer
Resistor Decade
Always open or always closed switch???????
New 9V battery
Old 9V battery
Method
Please find below schematic:
Current in the circuit and voltage over the changing resister values of the
cascades were measured.
After the measurements the open circuit voltage got deducted with the
voltage measured across the resistor cascade. As such we could figure out
the voltage across the internal resistor.
Reviewer´s comments:

Nice job, the objective and method and procedures are all ok, we might be
wrong as well but we thought in the expectations in addition, it is probably
expect also that the internal resistance of the old battery to be higher than
the new battery because as we draw more current from the battery, the
terminal voltages drop and that behavior can reflect on table below.

Results and Discussion:

Tables as reference:

Graphs as reference:
The graphs "RiNew" and "RiOld" are the values of the internal resister. With
the function of linear trend within excel we can create a function. How this
function can be found “manually” can be find later in the lab report. The given
function provided by excel gives us a lower internal resister value with the
new battery then with the old one. The higher the internal resister the more
voltage it will receive across itself (law of ohm).

Reviewer´s comments:
We can ague more, that was definitely what we expected to be the behavior
between the two batteries.
We found it hard to read the values on the table to compare the terminal
voltages drop Us = Ul, but assuming from what we thought was your
measured voltages Us, we though they are far less than what was expected.
Again we can be wrong, we rather leave it for more clarity in class. However,
below is the graph and table from our measurements.
Conclusions:
We can conclude that the internal resistance of a battery becomes higher
with time. As such the original expectation is answered as we can now proof
that the light shines less bright because less voltage is available.

Reviewer´s comments:

From our results if you compare the individual internal resistance between
the old and the new battery, you found out that the internal resistance of the
old battery is higher than the new battery, therefore looking on the table you
can see that you have higher voltages in the new battery than the old.
