The students is required to the read every question very carefully.
All the Assignments are to be done in Assignments Register only strictly in the given serial order.

Q1. What is strain energy and impact load? (Dec. 2013, 5 Marks)

Q2. A steel specimen 1.5 cm2 in cross-section stretches 0.005 cm ever a 5 cm gauge length under an
axial load of 30 KN. Calculate strain energy stored in the specimen at this permit. If the load at the
elastic limit for the specimen is 50 KN, calculate the elongation at elastic limit and proof
resistance. (Dec. 2013, 20 Marks)

Q3. Using an Energy method, find the central deflection of a beam length ‘l’ simply supported at ends
carrying uniformly distributed load per unit length in addition to two concentrated loads of ‘P’
acting l/4 from each support. Flexural rigidity of beam is EI. (May 2016, 15 Marks)

Q4. A solid shaft transmits 1000 KN at 300 rpm. Maximum torque is twice the mean torque. The shaft
is subjected to a bending moment, which is 1.25 times the mean torque. The shaft is of ductile
material for which the permissible tensile and shear stresses are 130 N/mm2 and 65 N/mm2
respectively. Determine the shaft diameter using suitable theory of failure. Give justification of the
theory used. Find results by use of maximum principal stress theory also. (May 2016, 15 Marks)
