“A Concert for a Cause”

Two consecutive typhoons struck our country. We saw and heard in our television the
intensity of super typhoon Lawin. As a matter of fact, first time in the Philippine history that
PAGASA raised signal number 5 warning in some provinces like Cagayan and Isabela.
After the exit of super typhoon Lawin, the devastating impact of this calamity
flaunted. Some of our fellow men died because of this typhoon. Many properties were
destroyed including their shelters and source of living. Number of infrastructures had been
damaged, trees were uprooted and power lines are toppled. Roads in the said provinces were
impassable due to landslides and toppled trees and electric posts. Actually, 60,000 families
were awfully affected.
Our fellow citizens didn’t know how to start again. Farming is considered their major
source of income/living but because of the typhoon, the crops were terribly destroyed. Many
business establishments were also damaged. The government should allot funds to repair the
damages especially the infrastructures as well as in giving relief goods to the needy.
In relation to this catastrophe, last November 4, 2016, a benefit concert was held in
Wesleyan University Auditorium. It was entitled “When you believe” (There can be
miracles). Students, professors and staffs of Wesleyan University-Philippines performed in
this said event. Many chose to sing while others presented beautiful dances. Aside from
showcasing the stunning talents of the students and staffs, the main purpose of this concert is
to seek help especially financial aid for our fellow citizens who became the victims of the
previous typhoons namely Karen and Lawin.
Being part of this event is something I can be proud of. I’m willing to lend a hand for
our fellow citizens. As a student of Wesleyan University, I’m delighted that my alma mater
not only has their core value as a display. Our university embodied these good values. That
concert was one of the prominent evidence. Honestly, even though there were some technical
problems arose and few performers were not a hundred percent ready still I appreciated their
efforts and eagerness to help the beneficiaries of the event. In my opinion, the most
important part of the concert was when we offered a prayer for the victims of the typhoon
because other than money, an invocation is the best way to help them.
Previous typhoons remind us to love our planet. Being a disciplined citizen will help
our country to ease the effects of the future typhoons that will possibly landfall in our
country. We should start in ourselves. We should be the change! We should not allow
happening the same tragedy we experienced in super typhoon Yolanda and Lawin. Being
prepared is better than losing all we have.
