I rolled over in bed and blindly stuck my hand out, feeling around for the satanic machine
referred to as an alarm clock. Unable to find it with my eyes closed, I slowly opened them
just that little bit so I could see where my alarm clock sat, in arms reach. Close enough for
me to press snooze, but not close enough for me to strangle and beat and destroy. Damn.
³Madison! Are you up?´ Mum shrieked from downstairs. Maybe if I don¶t answer she¶ll forget I¶m
even here and go to work without bothering me.
My mother, the work-a-holic neat-freak housewife extraordinaire. She was petite standing at five foot
five, full of energy and never without a duster, or vacuum, or mop. The woman was unstoppable, and
I envied her willpower. I hated it now though; she¶d be up in room in precisely«

The door burst open and I tried to hide from her wrath under my covers but she ripped them off me,
and strode over to the blinds I preferred permanently shut. She pulled on the cord, yanking them open
and allowing all that damned sunlight through my window. My room was flooded with light, so much
that it hurt my eyes.
I couldn¶t see anything, didn¶t want to, not when it was that bright. I tried reaching for my covers on
the floor but she pulled them further away. I thrust my hands out in front of my face, trying to block
the unholy sun rays but to no avail. The skin on my palms started sizzling, the sun causing it to turn to
ashes right before my eyes. The excruciating pain! Burned alive by the source that keeps humans
living and breathing. My mother, the murderer! She might as well have grabbed a crucifix and staked
me in my non-beating heart.
Ha, just tricking. That was good, right? I had you, didn¶t I? There are no such things as vampires! At
least not in this book. The most supernatural thing I¶ve ever encountered was the vampire bat at the
zoo, and I¶ll tell you this now, those things are bloody boring. To all you Twi-hards out
there, Team Edward, ooooh (cue a million girly screams, and not just from pre-teen girls, I assure
you) this book has absolutely nothing to do with pansy blood suckers that sparkle like disco balls in
the sun, or boring down syndrome girls with a tendency to twitch irritably, who attract practically all
the male attention in their weirdo schools in weirdo towns named after kitchen utensils. No, this book
has none of the sort. (Cue a million disappointed sighs). Brace yourself now; this book has a different
storyline! No way right?! Enough of this Twilight shit, back to the real story.
So after my mum so rudely interrupted my determination to sleep through the alarm, and her yelling,
and virtually anything else in my way of a perfect sleep-in day, I rolled out of bed ± literally, and
stumbled my way to my wardrobe, grabbing out my typical private school uniform, tie included. I laid
all my clothes out on the bed, stripped down to my underwear and ran to the bathroom adjoining my

he way that boy makes me feel, now is a cliché. Wobbly knees ± understatement.
T Butterflies ± more like tornadoes. Sweaty palms ± I need a beach towel. Tongue tied ±
forming words is harder than climbing Mount Everest right now. Alex Sutherland gets my
heart beating a million times faster than I was willing to admit, and I hated myself for succumbing to
his charm.
He was handsome beyond imaginable belief; tussled blonde hair softer than fairy floss, blue eyes you
could get lost in if you would just allow yourself that brief moment to look right into them, a smile
that belongs on the faces of actors like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, not to mention a body both models
and football stars would trade their life earnings for. Alex Sutherland was the pinnacle of hotness.
And I, Madison Gray, had been wrongfully, unjustly, soul crushingly dumped by him.
When it happened I was left with not only an aching heart, but an aching body. My whole being felt
wronged, I had become dependent on his texts, and his I love you¶s.
³Hey gorgeous, what¶s so funny?´ Oh sweet Jesus, that voice was enough to send me beyond the
point of no return.
You must stay strong though Madi, repeat the new mantra. Your Alex mantra
He is an asshole.
He is an asshole.
³What do you want asshole?´ I surprised myself with how much venom there was in my voice. It was
definitely convincing, so why didn¶t he flinch?
I felt myself giving in to his irresistible charm again, when did I become this weak! How would Joel
feel if he knew it took all my will power to stop me from flinging myself at Alex freaking Sutherland?
I was utterly hopeless, but I still had a microscopic bit of determination left«
He is an asshole.

he bell that signalled the end of form class rang, and I made my way to my locker. Unzipping
my pocket I pulled my key out and unlocked my locker, where all my books towered in no
organizational pile what-so-ever.
I had Legal Studies first up with Sir Jackass McConnorly, Uniform-Nazi extraordinaire. I fixed my tie
up, pulled my socks up and made sure my jewellery was ³acceptable´ before I set foot in his
classroom. There was still no sign of Kyra on my walk from M block to C block, and no trace of Chris
or 7ose either. I tried to stop worrying, but something inside me was freaking out there was nothing I
could do about it. My gut was telling me something was wrong, I just wish I knew what it was.
I dropped my books on a desk in the second row and waited for the rest of my impossibly small class
to file in. Including myself, the class consisted of six people; 7achel, Georgia, 7obbie, Samantha and
unfortunately« Alex. This guy was impossible to escape, yeah so we worked our timetables out so
that we¶d have most of our subjects together back when we were dating, but I sure as hell regret it
now.
No matter how hard I try, he always finds a way to sit next to me in every single class. Whether he
does it just to piss me off or he genuinely enjoys my company is beyond me, but it¶s not like I care all
that much either.
³¶Sup Mr McC! How you doin¶?´ I hate his confidence so much, someone should go and squash it!
³Shut up and sit down Alex, and fix your tie.´ What¶d I tell you? McConnorly was a Uniform-Nazi
extraordinaire. He didn¶t even have to look up from his laptop to know Alex¶s tie was half undone.
The man had a gift, albeit not a very good one.
³Good. Put us all out of our misery.´ I mumbled just loud enough for him to hear.
³Aw, don¶t be like that Madi, I know you lurrrrrve me! Move your stuff over so I can sit next to my
favourite girl.´
³Oh shut up Alex, and piss off. I don¶t want you anywhere near me.´ I didn¶t mean one word of my
conviction, and he knew it. He moved my books over and pulled out the chair I had my feet on. He
lifted my feet up no matter how hard I tried to keep them down, sat his heck of an ass on the chair and
put my feet back down on his lap.

phone. I silently wished it was a call asking Alex to go home and never come back, but that feeling in
my stomach rose again, and this time I couldn¶t swallow it. Mr McConnorly¶s short replies didn¶t give
me much to go by though.
He placed the phone back down, and turned around with a grim expression on his face.
³Madi, you¶re needed down at front office immediately. Take your things too.´ That feeling in my
stomach only got worse now.
³Why Sir, what¶s going on?´ my voice was shaky, although I didn¶t have a reason to be so scared and
nervous yet. I had no idea what was going on. So why was my stomach telling me otherwise?
Mr McConnorly didn¶t look up at me as he dismissed me with a flick of the hand. I grabbed my things
and turned towards the door, trying to keep my pace steady. No point rushing, I kept saying to myself,
if it¶s bad news you might as well prolong it. But no matter what I said, that feeling in my stomach
just wouldn¶t go away, so I tucked my things under my arm and bolted towards the front office, not
sure what to expect when I got there.

sixteen year old girl, for shattering her family, for inflicting all this pain. I just wasn¶t quite sure how
I¶d do it yet.
I was just about to undress and have a shower when I remembered something I had been neglecting
for days now. Paul. I reached into my not-so-secret hiding spot and pulled out my leather bound diary.
I flipped back its cover and I read through some of my older entries. Most were about Kyra«
I let the tears spill and land on the paper, causing some of the ink to run, but I didn¶t care. A few
smudged words could never take away the memories and meaning behind the words. After all, it was
just paper.
I turned to a fresh page and grabbed a pen from my desk. I intended to write a short entry to make up
for my days spent in misery, but I felt like the right words would not form. I tried anyway.
ñ
)
*
I closed the book but hung on to it, I decided to take it with me, and read a bit to Kyra, remind her
what we used to be like. I let out a heavy sigh, I wasn¶t ready for this, but I felt like I owed to Kyra,
and also to her family. They¶re going through the exact same thing too, the least I could do is show
that I¶m there for them. But who¶s there for me?

lost I turned to her for guidance because she always used to know what to do, and she would never
falter. That rock was sinking faster than it could swim.
³How do you think it was Mum? My best friend is as good as dead. It was bloody great, we had a
blast, me and the ventilator. Totally epic!´ Just when I thought I was all out of tears, I began to cry
again. My body was leaking, but I didn¶t have enough plugs to stop the flow.
³It¶s okay sweetie, let¶s just go home. You¶ve been so brave today. Let¶s go home.´
We arrived home and were met with dead silence that spoke so loud it rung in our ears. Our home was
just like Kyra, an empty shell. I ran up to my room and slammed the door. I threw myself onto my bed
and let it all out, everything I¶d been holding on to the moment I stepped foot in that hospital room. I
let go of the fake smile I¶d come to rely on, the strong front I¶d put up, I let every last bit of it go. I
curled up into a little ball on my covers and cried. No, I didn¶t just cry, I wailed and I wept, and I
moaned and I let every emotion in my body pass through my tears til there was nothing left and I had
exhausted myself. Although there was nothing left to cry, I still went through the motions of sobbing,
just without the fresh tears. My eyes stung, my head hurt, and my throat was sore but none of that
added up to the immense pain I felt in my heart.
In that instance I became a little girl again, utterly lost and dependant on someone else to guide me, so
when my mum came in and wrapped her arms around me I felt more at home than I had in a long,
long time.

³I¶ll catch up with you in a second; I just need to talk to 7oxanne about something. Meet me at my
locker?´ I didn¶t wait for his reply. I stood towering over 7oxanne as she sat uncomfortably at the
table.
³Do you need a reminder that Joel has a girlfriend? And that girlfriend is me. I would be ever so
grateful if you stalked someone else more« available. But I¶m not asking for your consent, I¶m
telling you. Back off. If I catch you throwing yourself at my boyfriend one more time, I swear on
Kyra¶s ventilator that I will end you, and expose you for the selfish bitch you are. Are we clear?´ I
was proud of myself for sounding so tough, when all I wanted to do was curl up in a tiny ball
somewhere in complete darkness and go to sleep, and never wake up.
I didn¶t think waiting around for her reply was necessary, so I walked away without a second glance. I
felt empowered! I mean, I really told that bitch where to stick it. Now to find Joel and give him a half-
hearted explanation of how I was feeling.
What the hell was going on, how could I be hearing Kyra as clear as I would if she were right by my
side? What¶s wrong with me, and why does my head hurt so much? Oh gross, I¶m sweating like a pig
too, and everything¶s kind of swaying«
