Bull, ONGC, Vol. 17, No. 2. December, 1980 DEVELOPMENT DRILLING OF BOMBAY HIGH WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO DIRECTIONAL DRILLING Sc, MITTAL* ABSTRACT In this paper, the author discusses the development diling of Bombay Hixh, various problems ‘encountered dhting normal and éirestional driling practioes, a revised exsing nolley to overcome sonie of the problems and specially the dierent concepts of directional deiliag ie, through vertical conductor, eurved cordvetor and slant rig INTRODUCTION ‘The first exploratory well on Bombay High was drilled by ‘Sagar Samrat’ in early 1974 and oil and gas was struck in Miocene Limestone. Since then fourteen exploratory- cum-assessment wells have been drilled to delineate the structure and assess. the potential of the field All these exploratory-cumvassessment wells were vertical wells, six of these were drilled by jack-up rigs ‘Sagac Samrat"/Shenandoah and were completed on mud line sus- pension, Balance eight wells were drilled by floaters Haakon Magnus/Dalmahoy and were completed subsea, All these wells were plugged back after testing. ‘After establishing the commercial existence of oil in Bombay High field the develop- ment drilling was started by jack-up rig ‘Sagar Samrat’ in October, 1975, To start with, "Sagar Samrat’ drilled two wells on platform location “A” and three wells on platform loca- tion ‘D* in the northern part of the field. All these wells were completed on mud line suspension and were disconnected, to be subsequently tied back and completed after the erection of the platforms on these locations. After erection of the platform ‘A’ rig ‘Shenandoah tied up the two wells completed earlier by ‘Sagar Samrat’ from the mud line to the top of the platform, ‘These two wells completed earlier by “Sagar Samrat’ were put on production during the month of May 76. Shenandoah drilled and completed two additional wells on platform “A” After erection of platform ‘D’, Shenandoah tied back the three wells earlier drilled by ‘Sagar Samrat’ and drilled and completed the fourth well on platform ‘D', Four more production wells have been drilled and completed on platform ‘C* by ‘Shenandoah’, All these wells have been directly drilled from the platform except one well which was partially drilled before the platform was erected. Superintending Drilling Engineer: Bombay Offshore Proket, ON GC, Pombay. 254 S.C. MITTAL in phase 1 & I of Bombay High development, five four-well platforms have been installed in the northern part of the field The 20 wells on these platforms are expected to have a production potential of 4 million tons of oil per annum, The twelve development wells drilled so far are directional Wells drilled in various directions depending upon the development pattern CASING POLICY Right From exploratory stage the casing policy followed for the drilling of the wells was 30° x20" 133795", Since the rigs were equipped to handle this casing policy and the hardware available was also suitable for the same, it was continued for development wells as well drive pipe is driven to @ depth of {50/169 Mts. 20” easing is lowered to @ depth of 250 mts, The 13$* casing is lowered toa depth of about 1000 mts. and the 9: pro- duction casing is lowered to the target depth and covers all hydrocarbon bearing layers. DRILLING MUD AND CEMENTATION ‘The drilling mud used is the water based bentonitic mud. In the initial stages the wells were drilled with a mad having specific gravity upto 1.30 but now the specific gravity is maintained in the range of 1.16'1.18. The viscosity is maintained in the range of 50. see. and the water loss 6 to 8 cc API Various indigenous and imported mud chemicals are used to maintain the mud parameters, This close control on sp. gr. has helped to. some extent in the reduction of mud loss. 20" and 137° casings are cemented to surface, 93° casing is cemented in two stayes to avoid loss of cement slurry during cementation ia the pay horizon. Sufficient number of centraisers are used on 135” and 95° casings. The casing is not reciprocated because of tae high drag in the inclined wells and for the fear of the formations breaking down
